I don’t understand the criticism of the FIA over this whole safety car issue… They operated the new 2022 safety car rules strictly and correctly. You guys need to read the rules… It’s up to the teams and drivers to discuss further and agree a new set of rules. Seidel of McLaren confirmed that this matter had been discussed ad nauseam post Abu Dhabi amongst the teams drivers and the FIA and they were unable to come up with anything outside the current rules! We survive boring races like Monaco every year and have done for 62 YEARS!! We have had 10 finishes behind the safety car in 541 RACES over a 29 year period! Let’s quit moaning and just move on

I think it would be easier to defend Max if it wasn’t for the horrible behavior of his fans (which he doesn’t try to help correct) and if he didn’t act like sort of a trashy arrogant child so often, saying things like he’s not enjoying being asked about something so he will punch the next person who asks about it and thinking it’s reasonable for an adult to say that. These large fan groups, max’s with their flares, etc the Tifosi, do seem to cause more trouble than they are worth.

38:11 I guess these 60% all agree with Michael Masi, using his authority to make sure the last race of the season would not decide the season behind a safety car (in accordance with the intention stated by the team bosses previously that race ending under a safety car should be avoided).
@andresilvasophisma
@andresilvasophisma Жыл бұрын
Fans not wanting the race to finish under safety car and aggreeing with Masi are two different things. Matt calls the Masi debacle like it is, a farce, and yet he also wants the races to finish on a proper lap, not a safety car. Why you mixed the two together doesn't make any sense. What Masi did was completely ignoring the rules to favor a specific driver on the last lap of the championship, he did not have authority to do it. The FIA Acknowledged this and even Horner did it too. Why a few people are still pushing the idea that what he did was correct is ridiculous. 39.12 If the clerk of the course considers it safe to do so, and the message "LAPPED CARS MAY NOW OVERTAKE" has been sent to all teams Competitors via the official messaging system, any cars that have been lapped by the leader will be required to pass the cars on the lead lap and the safety car. This will only apply to cars that were lapped at the time they crossed the Line at the end of the lap during which they crossed the first Safety Car line for the second time after the safety car was deployed. Having overtaken the cars on the lead lap and the safety car these cars should then proceed around the track at an appropriate speed, without overtaking, and make every effort to take up position at the back of the line of cars behind the safety car. Whilst they are overtaking, and in order to ensure this may be carried out safely, the cars on the lead lap must always stay on the racing line unless deviating from it is unavoidable. Unless the clerk of the course considers the presence of the safety car is still necessary, once the last lapped car has passed the leader the safety car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap. This part is very important. «. Unless the clerk of the course considers the presence of the safety car is still necessary, once the last lapped car has passed the leader the safety car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap.» Last lapped car it's not the third lapped car, it's a very specific and well defined car. It doesn't say "the last car from the group of cars allowed to unlap themselves, it's specifically the last one. Also, the safety car did not pit on the following lap it entered the pit in the same lap it was announced.

I don’t think so, I would be on the side that: there should be a set rule where it will automatically be a red flag instead of a safety car if it’s X laps towards the end of the race. As a somewhat recent F1 fan, it blows my mind that they see something like Abu Dhabi 2021 and develop no contingency plan for better handling of a late race caution scenario. It seems like gross organizational incompetence to have had that happen and the only takeaways they could come up with were the absolutely barest minimum they could of firing Masi and not breaking their own rules to unfairly alter the outcome moving forward. For an organization with a lot of money that values their image, seems like a no brainer to put a small team on developing a plan for such scenarios.

Why should it be changed? I haven't heard a single argument as to why it needs to be changed that doesn't come down to "entertainment". But look at this race, why red flag it? RB/Max had a perfect weekend and nobody was able to get close, yet people want Ferrari to have a shot because that would be cool? RB started their raceplan on Friday by doing the most long runs, they sacrificed a possible pole position to get Max the best car in the race. He was able to deliver and make his softs lasts, because he did his homework. All that needs to go because we don't like races to finish behind a SC? That's just artificial random stuff added to the race, we got that in FE and nobody likes the fan boost there.

I think for the race ending under safety car(if it was to become a more common occurrence). If the yellow(SC) is throw with 5 laps left they have two laps to clear it for racing if not they bring them down pit road and park them in the order they are in and they are not allowed to do any repairs or tire changes to the car unless required by the stewards(repair the front wing if it’s missing, haven’t done the mandatory compound change, or if something is deemed unsafe to continue on/with by the stewards) then they can have a Standing start or Rolling start Stewards choice for two laps(Green, White, Checkered)

I was listening to a conversation where someone said, look, this safety car business matters, a) if your favorite driver is leading or had a chance to lead prior to the safety car b) if the championship is super close, and it's a make or break race. Other than that, it's just racing. No one will ever be happy whether you red flag it or you finish under a SC finish. Someone will be screwed over, we see this even when it's not near the end of the race, because someone dives in the pits, but the other driver in front is too far a head, so they don't get the benefit of a cheap pit stop.

I get that the Red Bull is a good car, possibly the best, sometimes second. Checo is a good driver, but in many cases he ends up behind the Ferrari's and sometimes even the Mercs, but Max wins. How much of this "dominance" is down to the Red Bull and how much is down to "Max"? I suppose we have to compare Checo and Carlos.

On Nyck de Vries, I just wanted to say that he did an amazing job, but I have been thinking about how Antonio Giovinazzi came into the sport. He subbed in for another driver at Sauber, and did amazingly well and everyone thought he was the next big(ish) thing. Then, however, he got to sub in again at the next race which was a wet race at the Chinese grand prix. Unfortunately he binned the car in the wet and then didn't get into F1 for something like 1.5-2 years. ....So how the paddock sees you depends on your last performance. The Williams has a very up and down performance, and it was set to do really well at Monza because it's a low downforce track. HOWEVER, we are going to Singapore next. A super difficult high downforce track with walls. It's fairly likely Nick will drive because Alex has had the complication with his operation unfortunately. Hopefully Nick will do well there too, but it would almost have been better if he had just had the 1 race and then left an amazing impression.

Stoffel Vandoorne subbed for Alonso in the 2016 McLaren, next to Jenson Button. He managed to score points on his F1 reserve driver debut, the first to do so since Vettel in 2007. Moreover, that was the first McLaren point of the season which put Vandoorne ahead of 2 world champions in the standings. Then the 2017-2018 GP2 engine aaaaaargh McLaren-Alonso meltdown happened and not much came from it. The point is: in F1, nothing is certain. Not even when you have a stellar debut. If he had been in a great car for 2017-18, he might have had a spectacular F1 career. If Checo did not get picked up by RBR, he'd be a retired midfield driver and not the Minister of Defence. If Russell would still be at Williams, his podium count would look different. -If Lord Mahaveer- For De Vries too, a lot will depend on where he ends up. I hope he - and every talented F1 driver - gets to show what he's capable of on a regular basis!

Agree. He had a good starting position because of penalties and then rode the middle of a DRS train for the majority of the race. He did well but at this point, the hype is overblown. One race doesn’t make a trend. The perfect example is Daniel Ricardo. He won Monza in 2021, but that one race doesn’t define his performance over a whole year. I hate this discussion around red flagging Monza, it wasn't a safety issue, so there is no need to bring out a red flag. You can't have Abu Dhabi and say "This is a robbery, why didn't they just end it under safety car", but then say "Oh they should have red flagged Monza, finishing under a safety car sucks". Choose one side or the other. This is what happens in sport, it's never a fairytale ending, you get poor finishes to games/races, that's an accepted piece of it. We don't need to be adding gimmicks to racing, to try and make it more entertaining, that's what people complain that they've done since Abu Dhabi, and it's still 100% focus on the sport, not the entertainment. This whole conversation is just stupid, we really do not need to gimmick up racing. Also, people called it a 'controversial finish' I'm sorry, did you guys not notice Max was ahead by over 15 seconds to Leclerc before the SC? Max was winning, with or without the SC, that was inevitable. And yeah Matt, no one complained about Baku last year, BECAUSE THERE WAS A CAR THAT HAD CRASHED ON THE RACING LINE. There was a justifiable reason to red flag that race, there wasn't here. Crying out loud.

It took 8½ mins from Ricciardo's car stopping to Max becoming the SC queue leader. When Ricciardo's car was already taken off track, Max was still at the back of the SC queue. This was due to Russell starting the SC queue, depsite being in 3rd, whereas Max was 1st and was at the back of the queue. My opinion on having a fair non-gimmick Green Flag finish is this: Automatic Red Flag with 'X' or fewer laps left. No tire changes or adjustments. When the track is clear the Safety Car leads the field around and a rolling start back at Start/Finish. Therefor same restart as a straight Safety Car. No fueling needed or other gimmick.

That performance really makes you wonder how good that Williams could actually be this year if they had a better driver.

Red flag and restart from safety car are the fairest. Because for the drivers nothing really changes to make it unfair. For the fans, it is a lot more entertaining than finishing behind the safety car. Standing starts to me are a bit too random. Drivers have a lot more impact on those around them at a standing start. Fine at the beginning of a race, because there is plenty of time to retake positions.

The finish does make me wonder if they should adopt the rule that some other series' do: No finishing under safety car. Keep it going, extending the race distance until the SC can come in (or VSC ended) and have 2 full laps of racing to finish. Obviously that can create fuel issues for some runners, but that's part of the appeal. I haven't watched NASCAR in forever, but I think they did something like that.

I know he was signed for the year but his best result in his first year was the point he scored in Malaysia when he came 10th and losing his seat after the following season. Hopefully Nicks career in F1 is more successful but it just goes to show that there has been other cases of people having to wait until their mid-twenties to get that F1 seat.

Nyck did fantastic in Monza! Just wish there could be even more opportunities that up and coming drivers can show teams what they are able to do. If circumstances would have been different, no one would have seen how great Nyck could be and he could very well have been overlooked by the teams for other drivers. Also, strategy calls are easy to critique in hindsight when you have all the info. If consider how Ferrari were making their calls earlier in the year, the call they made in Monza was nowhere near as bad. I think they thought they were going to get a better deal with the VSC than they ended up getting, so it wasn’t a travesty of a call just more of an unlucky one.

I thought Chain Bear's solution in his video sounded pretty alright, and Matt's suggestion at the end sounded very similar. Check if everything can be cleared in time under a safety car for a few laps of racing at the end. If not, pause the race (not necessarily a red flag, why not make a new flag for it, would make it easier for fans to understand too). Then when the track is clear, the field goes out behind the safety car again and its a rolling restart just like if the safety car had been out, but without the laps being exhausted by them driving around waiting. I don't know what would be fairest in terms of tire changes etc. but since we'd be doing it under a new flag, it would have its own separate rules like not allowing tire changes during it (if that's the fairest option). Also the reason for the Baku Red Flag was obviously the severity of Max's crash, showering debris all over the track that would have the marshals in the middle of the track for a fair long time cleaning it up, assessing any damage to barriers and such. I do agree though that there needs to be a rule that if heavy machinery is brought onto the track like a crane, that should really be an automatic Red Flag for the very obvious safety reasons.
