I finally had a chance to compare the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with 33" tires against a Wrangler with Xtreme Recon with 35" Tires. What will the difference be for MPG/0-60?

I've got a 2021 Rubicon 2.0T with the Mopar 2" lift running 35" BFG all-terrains. It's stock other than the lift and larger tires. The elevation where I live (something that can have a big impact on performance and fuel economy) is 4500 feet. Typical driving for me is a mix of city and hwy (about 50/50). I routinely get 20 mpg with my regular driving. Running at freeway speeds below 70 mph I will get 23 mpg. If I am on country highways where my speed is 50 - 60 mph I get 24 - 25 mpg. My dad has a 2018 Rubicon (stock) with the 3.6 V6. He's lucky to get 15 or 16 in mixed driving and 19 on the hwy. I don't regret my decision to purchase the 2.0 turbo I believe the biggest benefit to the turbo is that it doesn't lose power as elevation increases. I routinely travel in the mountains at elevations approaching 11,000 feet. I never lack for power to pass slower vehicles thanks to the turbo compensating for the loss in air density over a naturally aspirated engine.

I just got a 2022 wrangler 4dr with the Willy’s package, I4 turbo, and 8 speed transmission. It’s got more get up and go than I expected. I test drove a v6 with smaller tires and even though it had a bit more from a stop, the turbo I4 felt great with the bigger tires and lift. It’s my first wrangler and I love it.

Thats because it has more torque than the pentastar V6. AND if you get a BANKS deringer, all turbo lag is absolutely GONE and stupid quick off the line.

Great review. The Xtreme Recon is now offered with the I4 2.0T (later in 2022 year) also. Would be great to have you compare your first Xtreme Recon with the 3.6 eTourque vs. an Xtreme Recon with the i4 2.0T. Full disclosure, I have an XR 3.6 on order. 2.0T XR was not available when I ordered in December 2021.

I just bought a 22 3.6 about three months ago, I thought I was buying a four cylinder but ended up with the six and I'm very pleased with it all in all. I've got the six speed manual and have routinely been getting 22 mpg on the highway only dipping down pulling a trailer. I've got plenty of power and was looking for decent mileage because most of my miles are highway. It seems to have all the power necessary on and off the road and is very responsive in every situation so far, three months into it. Thanks for the analysis compared to the turbo four.

Thanks for the vid, JB! It looks like the 35's don't make that much difference, which is surprising to me. Coming from a sports car background, I'm a bit paranoid about unsprung weight, and 32.5's vs. 35's seems like a huge weight difference. On the engines, I get the appeal for both. I'm a tech-head through and through, but I get the appeal of simplicity, especially in an offroader. The guy that kept that CJ5 in service all these years is blessed and deservedly so. But I do love my 4xe with all its ridiculous torque and driveability.

I imagine the size of the tires are 33.0 and 34.5 most 35s are 34.5 and the 285/70 number is 33.0 depends on brand of tires to. I can’t compare having a jk 3.6 engine I just went from 34.1 tires to 33.0 tires and it’s a big difference. I would like to try these engines and the tire difference.

Looks like I am late to the party but here I am! I own a 2022 Wrangler Rubicon JLU with the factory XTreme Recon package (35-in tires) with the V6 eTorque and the 850RE automatic transmission. I have added a 12K winch up front and a few extra embellishments. My son owns a 2018 Wrangler JLU with the Sport trim with the I4 Turbo and the same 850RE transmission. He has added a Mopar 2-inch lift kit and installed 33-inch AT tires. Both Jeeps have factory gearing. We recently took both Jeeps on a Jeep BoH Trail (Hole in the Rock, Utah) where for three days we covered exactly the same highway miles and off-road miles. We both put 5 gallons of carried gas into our Jeeps on the last day to head home. When we got to the nearest gas station roughly 94 miles away I had 0.4 gallons of gas in my tank and he had 3.25 gallons in his tank. I suppose his does get better gas mileage. This is a real world test.

My wife ordered a '21 Wrangler Unlimited Sport Altitude. We wanted to get the V6 but at the time it was only offered with the Etorque which was a non-starter for me due to extra battery, complexity. For me, long term reliability is the main consideration (simpler and proven is better). Reluctantly got the vehicle with the 2l Turbo w/o Etorque. At that time the 2l Turbo had somewhat of a track record so we went with it. I must say that after 10k miles, I am extremely surprised by this engine. It gets shockingly good mileage - even better than the EPA estimates of 21/22/24. Very powerful, too. I also have a '21 JGC Trailhawk with the 3.6l V6. Love that car and engine also but the Wrangler surprisingly gets the same or better mileage (especially in the city) despite having the aerodynmics of a brick.

Nice video. From my experience of driving different cars, trucks and what not, those that drink gas like a crazy I notice that if you accelerate with full pedal to the speed you need to be at, then let go and pretty much hold your gas pedal after just enough to keep up the speed will get you a lot of mpgs vs accelaring slower and then keeping up with your foot more in. I donno, something in the way a vehicle accelarates which drops your mpgs but not as fast before you reach your desired speed. Try it, I guarantee you'll see a difference between fast acceleration and normal or slow. Just a thought! :)

Call me crazy but I would probably get the 4 banger. We had a Pentastar in a JKU back in 2016. Not impressive but adequate. We also run a lot of the Pentastars at work. Almost all of them end up with valve train failures and excessive noise. Give me the lower cost up front slight torque advantage and potentially more miles per tank. Love the wrangler vids!🇺🇸💪

I've had it 3 and a half years since mine is a 19 and I have 48000 miles on it with 0 issues to the engine ( knock on wood ) granted I live in Colorado and turbos are way better in the mtns but I feel that this has been a lot sportier feeling than if I had gotten the v6. I also wanna say I run bigger tires , and carry 600 ish pounds of camping gear at all times ( roof top tent , awning, sliders , rack etc ) and i don't regret my choice at all

So I will say I have owned the 2.0 turbo for the past two years. I have roughly 43k miles on it. The one thing that I will say the biggest difference is would be you must put midgrade or higher gas in the 2.0 turbo. So over time you may or may not spend more money with that price difference with gas the way that it is. That’s one thing to consider. Other than that I do have a JLU sport with 34 inch tires with a 3 1/2 inch lift. I average between 19 and 22 miles per gallon but I drive very conservatively (65mph) everywhere I go. Too many tickets in the past…..

Great content. I love the comparison between the two Jeeps. I think your comparison of the power of the 2.0T is emotionally biased against your experience of turbos of the past. I have a 2021 JL Rubicon 2.0 turbo on 2" lift, 37's beadlocks, and re-geared 4.88. I get great acceleration, but more importantly 4x4 wheeling is about low end torque. That's what you need offroad. There is no delay off the line with torque. Do your research on this turbo. It is not like engines of the past. You get the low end torque off the line.

But turbo lag is still a thing bro. Physics > your opinion

Also, When you talk about fuel economy, there are two points of perspective. One being to put less pollution into the environment, type of economy. The other being saving money in your pocket, type of economy. I would venture to say that 99% of the guys talking about fuel autonomy on jeeps are talking about saving money. When you consider the cost of running 91 octane or higher in the turbo as opposed to 87 octane in the V6, there's absolutely no question which one gets better cost economy. Hands down V6. Cool video.

I think the 4.56 gears on the first jeep over the 4.10's on the second one pretty much equals things out even with the difference in tire size. Correct gearing for the tire size you run can make all the difference.

Nice idea to compare the two, but you compared "apples to hand grenades" . Recon package has heavier tires and it's lifted. I4 is right at home for a stock Sport trims, especially two door, but it's known to get very thirsty under load - bigger tires, lift, towing, 5 people in the car - MPG drops below V6. I4 has a very narrow MPG utility band over V6 before it loses it completely. It's actually the reason why their 4xe jeep is a "fake electric vehicle" - after 20 miles the heavy battery just suffocates the tiny I4 with MPG below 18.

J.B. those are nice. My ‘93 Chevy Silverado 1500 two wheel drive with 5.7L v-8 gets 19 mpg out on open road with A/C during the summer plus it’s paid for. I don’t think good mpg will help ease the pain of the monthly payments. That’s my thinking. Your talking about turbocharged motors, most drivers will put their foot in it constantly just for the feel, thus mpg will suffer. Keep’m coming 👍👍🙂🙂

Better mileage, More TQ and lower RPM, better fuel economy, its about 2K less than the V6 and it doesnt run the E torque system....2.0 is very stout. However, my only issue with the 2.0 is that it sounds course, where the V6 sounds buttery smooth and refined.

Where do you live? They are both nice. Acceleration looked about the same. But you'd need to compare both either with or without ER package to make it fair. I'd proly take the 4cyl myself. And the etorque 6cyl is nearly $1700 more than the 4cyl now.

Thanks, you’re not going to see any noticeable performance gain between the etorque and non. The etorque doesn’t really give you much gain for fuel mileage as I had the etorque on my ram 1500 V8.

@vdub5818

@@troutriver58 as someone who has had the ecodiesel rubicon for 30k miles and now 17 months, trust me the overheating is exaggerated by many. I have had mine get hot, but not enough to derate. Even then that was only with a loaded down M1102 trailer, on the HMMWV steel double beadlocks and kevlar 37's, that has a very large frontal area made of the military soft top pvc coated canvas thus turning it into a big sail. Even with the most non optimal trailer it still took local heat of 102° ambient and elevation of +5,000 ft to get it hot. It would only do it on climbs, and as soon as you get to the top of the hill it was at standard op temp in less than a minute. Dropping speed helps alot. I'm not at all saying it isn't an issue, because it for sure is. Something that Jeep engineers definetly should have addressed but their hands were kind of tied because space is VERY limited in the cooling stack. It is just that those who have had it happen tend to exaggerate the situation and what exactly caused it. For example, that same trailer was pulled from Atlanta to Montrose, CO with the top off so it had much less drag, in summer at 80 mph the whole way without overheating. It was only once I got out west, in the middle of July heat, and put the top on that it got hot in between Montrose, CO and Moab, UT. For reference the day it got hot, when we rolled into Moab it was 115° ambient temp.

Diesels are great or at least they were, but nowadays you have to add piss and worry about clogging the DPF. The motor itself is great just the pollution control stuff is usually the weak link.

15:32 Looking at them side by side, or top by bottom as it were, it seems that the v6 starts out a bit quicker and is very slightly beating it but then once the turbo kicks in they reach 60mph at the same time.. But I feel like the v6 has more off the line torque which is really what you want off-road.. If you need immediate torque to get over obstacles.. you can't wait for turbo to kick in. For towing a small trailer I think the turbo may be good because towing is a constant power requirement so that turbo will be constantly getting use, if it has better gas mileage.. But TBH I'm happy with the v6 etorque numbers.. I would not expect a vehicle with such heavy axles, 35s and bead locks to be that quick on the v6.. That might actually be very nice. What I'd like to see is how the etorque handles towing a small trailer.. what the MPG goes to.. I know the regular pentastar I've been told it gets down to 10 mpg.
