He's being more restrained because it's only the second race of the season :) This time last year, there was much respect between Hamilton and Verstappen too, it was only later on when the heat was turned up that things got rather ugly. If Leclerc stays in the fight and close to Verstappen on points, I suspect we'll see the same happening again. Will be interesting to see how Leclerc handles it as he's raced Verstappen in the junior formulas and has more experience at it than Hamilton.

Ricciardo was doing really well before the safety car. He was going a lot faster than majority of the field and was likely to fall into between 8th and 6th when all the other drivers did their pitstops. Problem was the safety car meant that he lost most of that as his competitors all pitted under safety car conditions so instead of ending up between 6th and 8th he ended up 11th with Norris right behind him.

To the point of DRS: I think there shouldnt be two drs zones seperated by just a single corner. A driver passing with drs shoulndt have to wait to pass because that would mean the opponent has drs after the next corner. It makes the first DRS zone kind of obsolete.
@jordy3525

Charles' comments about loving the racing even after losing the race sounded exactly like Rosberg in Bahrain years ago. But within only a few weeks they were completely at each other's throats. I think it will ultimately come down to how mature the drivers and the teams are to prioritize diplomacy over gaining every tiny advantage. With verstappen and horner on one side I don't really expect much restraint come the business end of the season. It really depends if leclerc and Ferrari instigate the situation further or not.

Move the DRS detection to the exit of the previous corner and not at the entry to the next corner before the DRS straight. That way, if the driver in front tries to slow down to get DRS, they run the risk of not only losing their position coming out of the corner, but then NOT having DRS after losing said position as well down the DRS straight after the next corner. It doesn't benefit them at all to try and slow down to get DRS at corner exit, whereas now, there are less risks as evident by the race this past weekend.

52:15 because it's not illegal, firstly, it's only illegal if you're coming into the pit lane, in which case you have to have all 4 wheels within the white line from the very start of the pit lane entry and they must not cross the line thereafter, Tsunoda was penalised as he missed the start of the pit entry and crossed the line late, secondly, they do it in Brazil every year. Max was investigated but not penalised for it earlier in the weekend.

Great podcast ! :) This is from the event notes: "Except in the cases of force majeure (accepted as such by the Stewards), the crossing by any part of the car, in any direction, of the painted area between the pit entry and the track, by a driver who, in the opinion of the Stewards, had committed to entering the pit lane is prohibited." So yes you could easily argue everyone could see and notice Leclerc was not about to pit, and therefore it's "okay" to cross the line. But again it's showing a rule by the FIA that's depending on the stewards interpretation.

The problem is with the old cars, even one DRS zone wasn’t always enough for overtakes, so they’ve designed a lot of tracks with back to back DRS zones. Now that allows the chasing car to close right up to bumper of the leading car, and when they take the turn the dirty air isn’t nearly as bad as it was so now they just blast past on the next straight. They should look at moving the zones so that they aren’t as back to back

Love the podcast! I’d like to highlight that yuki got the two 5 second pens in Austria because he was putting and crossed the pit lane line, if it was for crossing the line whilst taking the racing line then every car would be 5 metres of the apex so it is clear that this is not the rule when not pitting! The rule about the pit lane entry line is to prevent drivers from faking a pit entry. So if you're intending to pit but cross it, as Yuki did, its a penalty. Crossing it otherwise isnt illegal. Canada is the most obvious example where its literally on the racing line. They also sometimes cross it at Baku and Interlagos. Same thing with the pit exit line. Cars on track can cross it but not cars rejoining from the pits.

Two possible changes about DRS: 1. Change the detection zone to the apex or right on the exit so that the drivers don’t play chicken in the brake zones 2. Shorten the DRS zones on the straights because it seems a little too powerful with these cars (I personally like the game of chicken because it adds another point of strategy during a battle)
@douwe1995
@douwe1995 2 жыл бұрын
The DRS zones in Bahrein and Saudi are just too close after one another. Which creates the 'DRS-chicken game' removing 1 DRS zone in this kind of tracks, shorten it or replace the detection zone would resolve a lot of the problem. I do agree its needed to create a fair chance to overtake in a battle between very equal cars.

I quite liked the DRS chicken, but they can solve it by simply moving the detection zone to the apex of the corner and if drivers still want to play DRS chicken, they'll have to find a completely new line through the corner.

The flashing lights, we saw the lights flashing on Leclercs car multuple times after Max complained. Perhaps he wasn't harvesting at that point?? Also crossing the pit line, I sort of guessed you can cross the initial line, its only after the dotted line - it shows it in the rules sheet for this GP.

@@baksatibi Theres usually a bollard after which you can't cross. See the Perez/Hamilton battle in... USA? They were fully using that part of the track but both come back across before the bollard.

Did the rules change this year? I thought the whole “don’t cross the pit entry line” thing was only for when you’re ENTERING the pit lane. If you’re staying out on track, that line doesn’t matter.

This was kinda funny... Max from 4th to 1st by overtaking both Ferrari's on track. (only got lucky overtaking Perez with the safecar) That's an A couse his qualifying wasn't really good. (just 2 tenth btw) Perez from 1st to 4th couse he got shafted by safety car but didn't do anything after that... Yah now that's an A* drive.... Couse he had pole.... Then Lewis.. Thats a D couse He qualified on P16! he drove from P15 (free spot couse Tsunoda dropped) to P10 in a Mercedes while there were only 13 cars still on track and 3 in front of him dnf'd in the last couple of laps... getting overtaken by K-Mag in a Haas... While Russel was on P5... If you are honest Lewis deserved a big fat "F" this race and didn't deserve that 1 point. He qualified 10 places behind his team mate..... In a MERCEDES..... And Zhou got a C finishing 1 spot behind Lewis including a bodged 5 sec and drive through penalty...

Peter Windsor noted that at Jeddah it was better top speed that ultimately trumped cornering speed. And in speed traps both Checo and Max were very fast. Still it took all of Max’s skill and effort to make the overtake that finally stuck. Those last four laps were thrilling.

They Almost missed Ocon vs. Norris in the Last Corner with their TV Direction. Noone has mentioned that as far as I could see, but Ocon just pulled of what Verstappen and Leclerc tried at the DRS Detection Point before the last Corner against Norris. Because of that Ocon had DRS on the last straight, otherwise Norris would have overtaken him like Bottas last year.

You just have to move the DRS detection line to the end of the corner not before. It should eliminate all issues.

I think the problem is having two drs zones so close to each other, the same happened in Bahrain, the driver who was ahead on the main straight always eneded up behind cause the other driver would get DRS into the second straight
