I'm SO tired of "trends." Find what you love and decorate the way you love and have fun with it. Being unduly influenced by what we're seeing in stores/magazines/wherever and changing our decor every year or three is consumerism gone mad. I'm a big fan of thrifting, creating, repurposing, and keeping classic pieces we love. We're living in our houses, not preparing for a magazine shoot. 😆 Cheers

This is exactly right. Why would I decorate on trends - when that will be outdated quickly? I have enough stuff. Any style can look good if it's done with thought as it reflects your style and how you want to live and express yourself.

Thank you! It was so refreshing to read your viewpoint. Trends are often expensive so finding creative and affordable ways to decorate while still looking somewhat current has become a bit of a hobby. I’ve found that repurposing and up-cycling is much more satisfying and personal than the latest “catalogue showroom look.”

The whole “multi functional spaces” thing feels SO out of touch. No one does this because they think it’s trendy…we do it because we can’t afford dedicated spaces. During the pandemic the second function that was added to all of our spaces was “office” many of us still need that

Very true due to the cost of everything still being so high & different lifestyles. To be fair, she is catering to the upper class which didnt really have to recover at least financially from the pandemic, not the average person. I agree to disagree that multi function room is going 'away'. First off, it's only a trend to those who are able to afford it as a trend. For the rest of us , especially those living in cities with sky high rents, and now with inflation going through the roof and still going up, multi functional room is a NECESSITY.

No kidding. Not all of us have massive homes, etc. That we have the extra space that is flexible to use how we want. Most of us have a room that serves multiple purposes. Office, workout room, guest bedroom. That won't change for many of us. Most of us live in smaller spaces. 😉

Seeing maximalism explained by interior designers that don’t completely dislike it helped me understand why it can be such a magnetic style. It requires a high level of curation, high level of personality. It’s great for those who love lots of art, or lots of handmade pieces, or lots of photos, or are an artist, or love being surrounded by memories & things that tickle our fancy. Many KZbin comments I’ve seen remark that the modern minimalistic style on almost every social media interior from 2021 is an overdone instagram style, where they all look the same (some say that’s why it’s predicted to lose popularity).
@ilikecontent2327
@ilikecontent2327 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Correct. I am an artist and can appreciate art and culture and all the nuances of design. And I don't know if I agree with the notion that the Maximalist style is overdone anymore than the neutral/modern style with its carmel/or white sofa and striped rug or taupe/cream throws, wood accents, textured plain art with stripes of black/cream/white and throwing in some neutral pillows or adding in a green plant and calling that adding color. (Lets not even get into the bedroom with the plain white duvets or white walls, neutral tones and taupe throws, or simple design rugs, etc.)Or adding a textured clay vase, or sculpture maybe a black accent wall. I find these styles bland and boring, but safe. Very over done. And yes like creating a beautiful complex piece of art it takes great skill and in-depth study and contemplation(trust me--it is not unusual for me to work with 15 or more shades, tones, colors of paint to create one piece of art--that is how you get depth to piece and make it coheisive). The Maximalism style is hard to pull off. I am not a designer, but can appreciate the difficulty some design styles present. But unless you have a keen eye for color and design(or can afford to hire a designer)you can really miss the mark when you pull a room together with this style. Which is why so many people choose a safer route of neutrals and classic designs and are afraid to embrace color. Believe me when I say that even professional designers(and artists)when doing a more challenging design(or say art piece) can fail at the attempt. The Maximalist style or styles that are similar can utilize all spectrum of colors and furniture(old and new) art that is modern or traditional--textures. But that it is all the same? That is like saying a Monet painting is the same as a Picasso. Because of the difficulty in pulling off that design in my limited knowledge I can say with confidence that I have as well as other artists(even at the highest level of skill) can work countless hours on a piece only to fail and start over. But we have a passion for what we do and that makes it all worth it. And when it works! Well that is everything... And when you make someone happy with the finished product...it is very rewarding. Be it a more complex design style or a piece of art. So that is what matters. 😊

This is why I decorate in Traditional style. It will never go bad. One can freshen it up with pillow change, new lamp shade, different rug, perhaps a new color paint but the bones stay the same and the freshen up bill is not outrageous! Husband wanted modern style when we first got married. He is cheap! When I explained that the price tag for his choice was going to hurt every 5-6 years….traditional it is.

This is why I don't style my house because of a trend or someone else's taste. I walk my own path far from a follower.Decorate with what YOU love & your style will never go out of style ♡ I don't have just 1 style. I love the modern yet old with warmth & character. So mine is a mixtures of both with a little cottage here & there. I LOVE going into homes with character & that reflects those that live there instead of everything being only 2 or 3 colors. Color,light,more family pictures vs art. That's what makes a cold home a warm home. I encourage everyone to surround themselves with what they love. There isn't any rules in decorating..except staying true to yourself ♡ as long as you love it..that's what matters. Another great video ♡♡ I have taken a few tips of V and intertwined them with my own. And loving my space

Same same! My main rooms are monochromatic with color in plants or art etc, but my smaller, more personal rooms make you feel alive in all the right ways. It started with our new home after the pandemic and 2 hurricanes. We were living in a camper and received help to get us in a mobile home. I let my kids pick the color of their rooms to make them feel more optimistic and personalize it. I. LOVED IT. My 6yr old daughter picked yellow. YELLOW! I wanted to run and hide but did it anyway. It’s bright, highlighter yellow and she has rainbow-light “curtains” with sheer drapes. We put jewel toned butterflies in clustered flight patterns all around. She has a night neon rainbow bedspread and a cloud lamp. I have never felt happier in a room in all my life. My 13 yr old picked bright neon green and a deep suede blue (two opposing walls green, the other ones blue). We put a 5 arm metal lamp with diff color led flood lights and painted the moon phases on an arc in the corner of his room starting on one blue wall and going to the other green wall. The moons are in chalk paint so he can write himself notes. He’s also got a large silver, seated wolf statue, howling at a framed piece of full moon art that says “Just a Phase” and wow I LOVE the mood it sets you in. Our master bedroom has an entire chalkboard wall where the bed is against it. I draw diff headboards any chance I get. I’ve learned to draw amazing flowers and I hung two giant Edison style pendant bulbs from ikea and I mean huge egg shaped dark glass bulbs that glow Amber at night with the giant filament. This is my least colorful room because I needed it to be calming, but it’s always interesting with chalk art. I draw my side, the husband draws on his side. I have beautiful flowers and my husband has a giant wizard arm reaching down with a finger extended like it’s tapping him on the head. It’s so absurd and yet so fun. The kids bathrooms is done in a red and black flannel, log cabin feel with rustic wood and red/black checked lodge style shower curtain and geometric deer/bear heads as art on the walls. It’s to help them remember the trip we all took once to Great wolf Lodge in TX. It’s an amazing space… Our master bath is soon going to be a deep deep peacock teal with wood accents as frames around windows, doors, and showers. I also have a copper and gold metallic pen that I’ll use to stencil in a fun line art pattern. Plan on finishing it off with boat hooks (like to wind rope on to secure sails, etc) as towel hangers. The counters are a faux white marble and I’m painting a giant nautical compass in the center of the ceiling. I’ll never ever go back to a boring, colorless house again LOL this place literally breathes new life into us ever day.

I also love when each room has color, completely unique designs and looks the people who live there love what they do and do what they love. Everyone has their thing and their house always reflects who they are! Thank you for your insight on this years home trends. ❤️❤️❤️

I’m definitely done with multi function rooms! I’ve had to do it my whole life and I am over it. We’re building our forever home for for the three of us (two adults and a four year old) and gone with a 4bd 3bth 3living areas, every room is small but being able to have the seperate rooms for things is more important to me that than a lesser amount of larger rooms.

Hi - I'm enjoying binge watching your channel! Overall, I agree with you on these trends - when the stuff starts showing up at Hobby Lobby, TJmaxx, Walmart, then it's waning for me. Right now it seems everyone is getting "pottery" and the highly flammable plumes - I saw a couple arrangements ignite in the 70s, seriously! At 63, I've kept the good ( what I considered good) from all the past decades. I've added more indoor plants again and a few woven baskets back from the 70's, from the 80s I don't have much but from the 90s I still like my silver trays, my cloches. I'll always have my antique dresser and plenty of books. If I get tired of something or it's too trendy I can easily let it go - I don't like a crowded packed house at all - I can appreciate minimalist design, modern design, but it's not me...plus, I love in southern Illinois rural so...design should suit the region I think. Anyway, love your channel, thank you!

Great content as always! Not a big fan of trends. When I was 16 (in the 80s) I wanted to paint my bedroom black - lol my mom overruled me. Also, since the pandemic, I've been working remotely from home and will continue as our office spaces are being pared down drastically. So I'll be moving my temp work from my bedroom to another room and making it full office. I need the separation and don't want my bedroom to be a multi-use space unless it's for cozying up in a chair to read or crochet 😁

I’d consider swapping the homeschool room for a multi-generational home library - the one thing I wished I had for the past 50 years. This is a place without a TV, but with comfortable places to do homework (which includes adult homework) or relax with a good book and a cup of tea. It’s also a good place to discuss business with guests such as your tax accountant, or someone doing work on your home. While so didn’t grow up with a library, there was one set of bookshelves in our living room that instilled in me the notion that my family valued reading, studying, knowledge, and intellectual growth as a regular and normal part of life at home. It’s a preference, of course, but one side love.

In total agreement over the lavender /periwinkle😱. I live in Central FL. It was very popular in the early 2000's, lavender walls, droopy swoopy window scarves, lacy frilly lamps, pillows & decor. It screams old lady to me. It's your grandma's house. I much prefer neutrals. I don't have the money to change out a roomful of furniture so I have an eclectic mix of vintage & modern pieces. Also. Minimalism, Pared down speaks to me. Ilove your own house. Quiet, bright, lots of space. Thx V!

A formative memory for me: When I asked the guy at the store to mix my paint he commented he never had anyone pick such a green before and asked if I was sure. I said yes bc it was for some little wooden boxes that sort the contents of my beloved green Ivar metal cabinets. He mixed the paint just going about his job, and went to put the dab of color on the lid like usual. He froze, staring at my fresh paint can in a trance like state for what had to be 2 whole minutes. I was about to ask if everything was alright when he snapped out of it saying, “Sorry about that ma’am, that’s just REALLY green. In my 10 years of owning this establishment I just well… I’ve never seen something THAT GREEN” and I burst into laughter so strong I started crying and he joined in realizing no offense was taken. That incident over my paint means Valspar’s Ivy League will forever exist in my home, because without a doubt, it’s green. It was spot on to match my cabinets and even just looks outright black in low light, yet Kelly green in sunlight. Jewel tones are very strange indeed and aren’t for the faint of heart. My home is straight from the glamour of the Great Gatsby and my stupidly green green works beautifully 🤣

At age 21, when I got my first apartment in the early 70's, the magazine, Apartment Life, was my bible. I was into dark chocolate carpet and walls and earth tones. I had a large ladder rack (made by my father) that I suspended in front of a floor to ceiling window where I hung over thirty plants (watering them was a big undertaking). There were Pier 1 bamboo shades on the windows and rattan bar stools. In the 80's, it was all about dried flowers, antique lace, antique furniture and Laura Ashley décor and clothes. There was also some country French in there, too, and there were definitely a lot of baskets. I have definitely moved on and my tastes have changed. I now enjoy a more neutral palette and cleaner lines. Having said that, I have to admit that I took pleasure in some of those "trends" and the part that they played in my life over the years. Finally, sorry, Valentina, but I have bangs.

Cheryl Kavanagh...SAME!! Tho I'm not remembering Apartment Life, more like House Beautiful and other shelter mags. My design style was also shaped in the late 60's and 70's (including many of the things you mentioned!!). It has continued on all these years and beyond into today's millenia. I for some reason was wise enough to have purchased great antiques, really because they were cheap and it was what I could afford, many of which I refinished myself if they needed it tho always with a light hand to preserve the character and patina. American Primitives, like a great dry sink lined with the original tin that I put a huge plant in. Also a pine corner cabinet, I used to display a museum worthy (literally) collection of fine antique Native American baskets, pots, beadwork in, as well as a sizable collection of early Navaho and Saltillo rugs and blankets which I draped over sofas and on the floors even in the kitchen. I hung early quilts on the walls, they were on beds, folded in cabinets...all of which I purchased for a SONG at the local flea market. It was all very Ralph Lauren, Mary Emmerling-ish but I gravitated towards this look before I discovered them. I don't live out west, (but I worked in the Country Music business, which was fitting) and people in my area didn't really know the worth of these highly sought after pieces so I was able to buy low and many years later, sell high to finance my first home with a whopping down payment to keep my payment low. That is one of the benefits to purchasing good antiques, they not only hold their value but in the right market can be a great investment. I still have a number of my first pieces from the late 60's and 70's, but as you noted, my aesthetic also has changed over the decades. I could kick myself over somethings I sold but fortunately I have some professional photographs of my apt. that I lived in for 20 years!! My rent ranged from only $150 a month in 1971 to still only $450 some 20 years later! It is now $2,000 a month when I saw a sign and inquired. It was my most favorite place I ever lived, a large 2 bedroom, 3rd floor walk-up in an early 1900's building with hardwood floors and huge windows facing east, south and west! On one of the most beautiful streets in "Music City"! It looked out thru magnolias and maples and was dreamy and romantic beyond words! Sigh! Of course being young, foot loose and fancy free didn't hurt either!! Anyway, it is fun to reminisce about those days tho this may seem like much adieu about nothing to some. I have a feeling from your sweet recollections that you can relate with your own memories! I certainly enjoyed your highly relatable "word pictures" and it triggered some of my own. 😉👍!
