In this video, we spend a day with the R4T crew at Wheeler Lake in Colorado. We take our newest build, which is the 2022 Toyota Tundra. The Tundra does some light rock crawling and gets stuck and has to be winched out.
Our crew comprises a few 5th gen 4Runners, 3rd gen Tacoma, 3rd gen 4Runner, and a 2022 Tundra.

ive never seen so many people in such well-built vehicles struggle on such moderate looking trails lol just goes to show doesn't matter how much you spend on modifications that driver mod is the most important one.

Welcome to the new age of “overlanding”, where dip shits tear up expensive vehicles the bank owns. Cant even go on Colorado trails anymore because of all the congestion. So sad, Colorado was magnificent.

Also these rigs are so weighed down. You can tell how heavy they seem on the trail. Less weight the better when you are off roading.

Never been to Colorado but I'm sure it's similar to Washington state. From my experience I will say the camera even 4 k ones will never do it justice on how hard the trail really looks.

You definitely want to have at least one locker on this trail and this video proves it. Throttle control goes a long way too!
@JulietHotelFoxtrot
@JulietHotelFoxtrot Ай бұрын
ATRAC/MTS is seriously good though. It is capable of delivering more power to the wheel with traction than a locker.
@dirttales
@dirttales Ай бұрын
@@JulietHotelFoxtrot I've used ATRAC and it does not replace an actual locker. A locker will provide traction to both sides simultaneously without any delay. I've experienced instances where ATRAC can cause you to fail an obstacle because of delay or one side spinning too fast while the other has no power. I owned an FJ Cruiser with ATRAC and then a Jeep Rubicon with dual lockers after that, the FJ could not compare to the amount of stable control the Rubicon had, but reliability was a whole other story..
@JulietHotelFoxtrot
@JulietHotelFoxtrot Ай бұрын
@@dirttales A locker by design must send half the power going to the axle to each wheel, regardless of if it needs it or not. ATRAC/MTS can brake the spinning wheel, which leaves nearly all remaining power to go to the traction wheel. So on a rear axle, it will send nearly 50%, less friction losses. Implementations vary over the years, each year getting better than the previous, with the best execution of this on vehicles with a locking center diff.
@dirttales
@dirttales Ай бұрын
@@JulietHotelFoxtrot I know how ATRAC works, but in real life use an actual locker is going to work the best. There is a reason why rock crawlers use dedicated lockers vs electronic control systems. Plenty of info on this..
@dirttales
@dirttales Ай бұрын
@@JulietHotelFoxtrot Also if the system works so well, then why does anyone who really gets into wheeling, IE rock crawling etc installs an actual locker when they already have these systems in play? Plenty of Toyota owners even go as far as installing a front locker when they already have ATRAC and a rear locker. If Toyota was confident in ATRAC being the best they wouldn't bother putting a rear locker into the FJ Cruiser or other models like the 4Runner Trail edition or TRD's...

It is inspiring seeing the skillful driver maneuver the whale of a Tundra with no crazy tall lift suspension or 40+ tires. @andyham6094
@andyham6094 Жыл бұрын
The fact that it’s a full size truck is what gets in the way. Way too big, heavy, and long to be rock crawlin. Weight is your enemy. The lightest and most nimble short wheel base is the way to go for rock crawling. Bringing a rooftop tent and every piece of gear and the kitchen sink isn’t the smartest for the rocks. But these are overlanders just hitting different moderate trails. They usually avoid the really technical hard stufff. Nothing wrong with that tho. Know your rig and why and how you built it for the type of off roading you do.
