One thing I notice about volvos is that they're either driven by complete hipsters or ultimate stealth wealth. My ex worked at an extremely fancy hotel and said the richest "old money" types never arrived in supercars, but in top trim volvo and range rover SUVs. I happen to fall into the hipster category myself

As a result every client I visit always makes the same type of comment: "Oh I Used to have a (insert Volvo wagon here). It was a great car. Love the color of yours! I work in a very wealthy area as well and this is pretty true. I have a customer who daily’s a jaguar xjs and any time it gets a scratch or paint chip, it’s repaired that week. We’re in the rust belt and he doesn’t even keep it in the garage yet it never has a scratch, it’s never dirty and it’s always running.

Overall though what he describes about getting in and driving without ever turning it on is true of Teslas as well, basically the action that "turns it on" is opening the door while having the connected phone in your pocket, you simply open the door, sit down, close the door, put it in drive or reverse, and drive off. Nothing to specifically turn it on.

I think the old man fear of EV's is more about the fear of loosing a choice, which the liberals are pushing for and is happening in pockets of this country, rather than gaining another option on top of gasoline/diesel to propel yourself around your world.

I feel the same way about my 2018 Chevrolet Volt LT. I just wanted something fun, zippy, and something that wouldn't guzzle gas. I only spent $25 in gas this month. I drive on EV for my daily commute. I will never go back to a full ICE vehicle. I'll do a full EV, or a plug in hybrid.

Unfortunately, until EV prices become as cheap as the affordable, capable ICE cars, until people are convinced used EVs will last, and charging infrastructure catches up in more towns, then EVs will still be considered a luxury possession. But now that super cheap, reportedly well-built Chinese EVs like BYD's are threatening the traditional American automakers EV market, they will have to work on introducing their own cheap EVs and ensure future competitivenes against Chinese EVs, even their survival. Edit; the Bolt is already fairly affordable. But some places like Ohio charge an extra $200/year to register an EV! And why aren't people buying it, still? I guess a lack of home charger or local EV stations? Comparison to the "Japanese car invasion" anybody? Well I'm not sure if the Chinese ev "threat" is a good comparison, but the affordable, well-built, fuel efficient Japanese cars of the 70s stole a good chunk of sales from the unprepared American brands who couldn't catch up in sales for a long time. So a similar thing can happen with uber-cheap EVs. At least with Chevy's experience in building their current EVs (the Bolt is pretty affordable right?), they have experience that can possibly be used to move the tech to lower cost models.

I just had the tyres on my EV6 replaced two weeks ago. 19,500 miles is pretty good going for 600Nm of torque. All four tyres pretty much wore down evenly as well. You absolutely do end up screaming away from any light or junction like a maniac; even when you gently pull away in eco mode everyone else seems to end up at least a little bit back in your rear-view mirror. I stopped saying "good for an EV" after about a month into ownership. Now I just say "it's the best car I've ever owned, better than even my 2016 Mustang GT" and leave it at that.

A member of my state’s Volvo Enthusiast Group got a C40 Recharge recently, they didn’t think the interior build quality was up to snuff. Obviously this comes from longtime Volvo owners so that’s the bar it’s measured against. Although I have driven an EQC400 and even though most of the switches were nice, overall the interior was not as solid as an old Mercedes, so maybe it’s just all new cars

Polestar 2 is a 'liftback.' not quite a hatchback but I can fit week-long camping for three with the 60% rear bench folded down. They're cheap (for an ev) too, with rental companies flooding the market. I love mine!

So glad you mentioned the placement of the fuel tank in the GTO!!! Many other cars put it UNDER the back seat. Ya know, just forward the baby seat anchors? Yeah, feels safe!

Did Mercedes ever stop using that position? They sure made a lot of industry leading safe cars with the fuel tank right there in the 80s and 90s. I think an impact strong enough to disturb the tank would likely have killed everyone instantly, it's nicely protected inside a big steel hoop far from either end of the car.

Uncle has one of these and ive driven it a bit. And as an "enthusiast" and a little doubtful of evs, but the c40 was great to drive and felt kinda familiar. Its an ev, that isn't trying to reinvent the car with so much tech everywhere like you mentioned. Its a volvo you know from your granddad. but even more quiet and more power instantly available, but still comfortable to daily. This is arguably one of tye best more common consumer evs there are. Go test drive one if you can, you who are reading this. Youll understand it well then.

If she goes right to her mothers and then home she doesn't need to charge, If she takes her mother out running around, they stop at Target 'cause they have chargers. All in all, except for true multiday trips, it has more range than we need.

I’ve got a Polestar 2 and I absolutely appreciate the simplicity, and total lack of jerkoff look-at-me crap that is polluting the EVs of BMW, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, etc. dashboard-wide screens, hidden vents that have to use touch screen controls, little light up pixels in your door cards, fake engine sounds, glowing front badges, ugh - it’s like Volvo/Polestar already went through their needy HEY MOM LOOK AT ME I’M AN EV phase and grew the hell up. I’m glad I leased mine because the next gen of them will be even better.

taught myself how to drive a manual on the sit-down Hard Drivin'. Got a ride 75 miles away to buy my first car (Volvo 245 Turbo manual) and drove it home without any stalls, first time ever using a real clutch. Hard Drivin' was second only to OutRun in overwhelming life influence.

The C40 is a tradeoff XC40 with essentially no upside. You save $250 on sticker and get 3 miles more range. But you get no rear visibility, less cargo space, and the polarizing kammback look. The C40 can't be the best EV because it's just a crappier XC40.

The EV Niros are pretty nice, as a Kia tech I strongly recommend once a week beating on the brakes in sport mode to keep the rotors clean from rust. Also continue avoiding DC fast chargers if you can, they lower the lifespan of the battery with repeated use.

the CX40 is an identical "car" with the squared off hatch area to be more practical. And I call it a car because it is. Look at pictures of this and the Polestar, it has the same body/roofline, just different front and rear treatments and a slightly lifted suspension.

I have one of these. I left the house with all the intentions of buying an Ionic5 and made a last-minute stop at the Volvo dealer just up the street from the Hyundai dealership. Show me what you got and tell me what it is going to cost me. Hands down they wanted to sell me a car and they certainly made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Mine is green and funny as it may seem, I have some Ikea furniture in my house that is damn near the same color as my car. Uncanny I tell you. I really love driving this car. I have never owned anything this powerful and I am not afraid to surprise the hell out of the occasional speed racer on 222. I have given rides to some people with very powerful vehicles and the way that Volvo puts your ass in the seat has pretty much surprised everyone. Personally I love the look of it. I like the Polestar2 also but my C40 in green is fantastic. My final thought...don't let the price scare you, just find the Volvo dealer that wants to put it in your driveway.

Old man checking in (born 1965😖): Spent the past few years driving an i3 REx. Amazing to hear comments from young & old who tell me how EVs won't work (despite me racking up 92,000 trouble-free miles on fuel 1/5 the cost of our Seattle-area gasoline). Beating an E92 V8 from stoplights is plenty hp for me (even if its nominally just 170hp). Biggest issue is the vandalized and broken public fast chargers (just came across one yesterday in Cle Elum, WA "Out of Oder" (sic) taped to it weeks ago.

My wife's Audi EV also has butt-based starting and stopping. It's infuriating. Want to get in and turn the climate on? Ok, but DON'T MOVE - This is especially fun when it's 90 degrees at the local farm and there's no cell coverage. I sure do love sitting in a 110 degree car because I want the interior cool before I drive away! Want to pick up your husband at the Ford dealer and get in the passenger seat so he can drive?
