I've heard that better engine mounts fix the wheel hop during launch which tremendously helps Elantra N!

I put stiffer bushings on the rear motor mount of my Veloster N and it made a significant difference in clutch engagement and wheel hop.

If nobody bought them the company would go under. you’re also comparing different things. Want resale value? Buy a Toyota, want something fast? Shit, get a Lambo. Different stroke for different folks. I understand what you’re saying, but there is a lot of value In the new N-Line. Just because you don’t like Hyundai, doesn’t mean nobody else does. Also, you can’t compare the Z. Way different class, price range, even the consumer target is different.

And that is only the 315 hp US version not the same here in Europe the first models that came out developed 343 hp factory claimed 320 hp then recent ones developed 330-335

@@Vanjrl337 I have a GTI TCR 290 hp which isn't available in America just for exemple here the facelift golf R has 310 hp and yet this GTI TCR which is a limited edition with 290hp is way quicker after 75mph 80mph it out runs a golf R easily although there is 20hp difference on paper I have yet to test it against a TYPE R I have won against an S3 a golf R and a Hyundai I30N , the only car that beat me was a Seat Leon Cupra 300 also FWD if you know it

@@marshall435 yeah it makes sense as you don’t have the weight of the awd. The same is true for tuned gti’s in the states. GTI’s are lil roll race monsters, because of the great midrange torque and weight. The biggest issues with the GTI is the power is limited by traction, so the R’s usually take them from a dig. I’d love to see VW build a rwd GTI, then I could sup it up and put drag radials on the back 😂

As expected, AWD makes a big differece. The other guy with the Elantra N, we saw him a couple of times, he seems to lunch better than this Elantra owner. I'm i wrong? Anyway, as always Sam, good job...

Another solid video. Thank you Sam. I like what you're doing with rotating drivers. It brings an average to the results, which eliminates any nuances with one time results. Maybe explore that angle a little bit more? Two different drivers for each dig race, (for each car) and two different for each roll race? Fun to watch. Thank you!

The cost difference is bigger than the performance difference by far. I'd save 12k and get the elantra n. There are several other cars for the price of the golf r that have better refinement and or performance that really make the golf r overpriced for what it offers.

I tried to get the Elantra but the dealerships all wanted to tack on around $3500 markup, definitely lessens their appeal. This market sucks. Ended up with a GTI. Good car too, more luxury, little slower.

@@aono335 we will see when the type R comes out... it is more than AWD... u factor in weight... if a light FWD keeps up the first 50meters then physics takes over after that... AWD is good when done right and in all weather not when it is 25+degrees Celsius... this is why only Subaru and ford have mastered the AWD systems

@@afrikengunner ford? Since when did Ford master the awd system? Audi has the real Quattro system, fwd based haldex with and without lsd, rwd based haldex with lsd. Audi has the best and they’re known for it for a reason. Ford, Chevy, Dodge and Mercedes and more have their truck lineup with 4x4 with and without locking diffs. Ford cars don’t have impressive awd systems.

Finally, a Golf that can compete with an Elantra N! (even though they're not in the same price category as the R costs 33% more) Yet, after the dig where AWD is an obvious advantage, the EN keeps up just fine, even wins the slower roll race, for $12k less!

Ah yes you still compare the manual base pack EN to the fully loaded DSG R I see. In that case the N will get clapped even more! Turns out when you pay 8k more you get awd, a faster/quicker, and more refined car.

I'm about to be 42 in a week, and I just switched from a MK7 GTI (manual) to an EN (manual). It's just too much fun. I liked the GTI, but it was just too "tame" of a drive for me. Plus, I REALLY don't like the new "haptic feedback" entertainment system in the new VWs...that's a deal-breaker for me.

I don’t think there are many cars out there that wouldn’t look out of place outside a nice restaurant,yet be spoken highly of by regular car loving guy ,leave most things standing at the lights,have 4 wheel drive for bad weather safety and yet at the touch of a button drift around a circuit sideways behind an s13 and still be relatively cheap to run and maintain,sit 5 comfortably and be pretty great interior fit and finish. I think that is WELL worth $13,000 more dollars. The N is a one trick pony. The R is the stable.

The race I've been waiting for Damn that Hyundai is impressive gotta give respect where it's due and I'm not even a Hyundai fan lol might become one after seeing this though haha What modes were both cars in during the roll races because it will make a difference ofcourse whether in comfort or sport etc. ? I think the Golf R in Manual mode during the rolls would do much better because it would been in full boost rather than Just having it in auto. I've seen when it's capable of but I don't think it's true potential was shown here. Hats off to the N nonetheless!

Great race....as for not using gps based trackers you can do it old school way and have 2 people with a timer once they cross finish. Its how they used to do it back in the day. Take avg of 3 runs and it gives you a fairly rough estimate.

Awd is worse from a roll even if it can go into 2wd. It’s extra weight and there is still more drivetrain loss. It’s only good for a dig, handling, and bad weather of course.

Just because it’s German doesn’t make it better lol, VW isn’t all that. The Golf goes fast in the straight line but has little personality.

The quality is not even close. The paint is so thin on the EN that if you wash it too much the paint might come off. lol I'd pay 12k more for quality. VW's last, while the EN will be in the junk yard in 10 years.

Great race same! I knew the R was a force to rekon with. My friend owns one. The roll racing needs Manual mode for the R as it does not use full boost on automatic due to VW reliabilty. Hopefully we get to see more MK88 R races

He’s saying it needs to be in manual mode to achieve full boost. They also limit boost in modes for strictly gas mileage purposes.

As expected. Bloodbath in the dig races, and in the right gear, the edge on a roll too. Nevertheless, for the price and performance, the Elantra is the bargain of the century. It's a shame it's not available in Europe. It would sell like hotcakes.

Keep in mind that the Elantra N is racing with the equivalent of a ECU tune using the R button. It won’t be benefiting too much from an ECU flash. The golf R isn’t using overboost and can do its thing all day long and will be in beast mode with an ECU flash.

Who told you 10hp gain is equivalent to an ecu tune? Most modern 2.0L Turbo engines are easily getting 50-80hp from only a stage one tune.

the R doesnt cost more for outright performance it costs more because it is basically a luxury car. it is not a track based car like the elantra N it is a balanced daily driver meant for taking off at a stop light and back road fun. the Elantra N actually should beat it on a track considering that is the whole purpose of the EN.

Great video compliments. An unequal race, a four-wheel drive with 40 hp more, against a two-wheel drive, which made a good impression. Since there is the golf MK8 clubsport two-wheel drive, why didn't you choose that version? Just to give Hyundai some opportunities ..

Being an airport. They have gps and frequency jammers so that certain electronics don't interfere with the airport systems. A simple stopwatch time and top speed that I'm sure each car can report would be something.

Crazy that the golf is in a much higher price bracket and rolling the Elantra is just as quick. We all know the Elantra/i30n is not built for speed but more Corning. Great test would be a track battle, my money’s on the Elantra.

Roll race shows the true power of a car and it showed in the 1st roll race video(2nd roll video Sam jumped) . The 2 races from a dig wasnt fair cause the Elantra driver didnt know how to launch the car or he let off once the wheel hop started happening, and you can see thats when the R starts to pull away .

In reality though the N runs around $45k so not far off there. Most Hyundai Dealers are adding at least $5k mark up some higher...The R might too, but Hyundai's are crap so in 5 yrs that N will be worth 1/4 its price. Buy one used.

In SoCal they MSRP for about $45k dealers are asking about $5k markup, so if your paying $60k where you live? Wowza, Hyundai here where I live are selling these N's for $10k over sticker, Not worth it to me, I would take a Golf R over a Hyundai any day of the week.

I was impress with Golf R performance so I went to a few dealerships and here in Australia the price is $74,212 base model no wiggle room for discount because they have no stock at all. Have to order it from South Africa or Poland not Germany. Same goes with Hyundai Sedan N but the price point is $55,000 also not from Korea. If I am paying that amount of cash I want it build from Germany for Golf and Korea for Sedan N not from other country.

For msrp, Hyundai has been killing it in terms of value. VW does too, but lately it’s been Hyundai/Kia have packed many feature AND given a very generous warranty, which you will need. I say this after working at Hyundai.

Keep in mind the Golf R comes standard with a lot of options. Also the AWD and refinement alone is worth the extra money. Imagine FWD in heavy snow and ice. It sucks. Plus it’s fun knowing you can launch the piss out of it and go 0-60 mph in 4.2 or 4.3 sec consistently

@@mqbr22 I’ve driven both back to back and the Gti and R are much nicer and more refined. I’ve been in every car in this class and the Mk8 feels like a luxury car in comparison. I’ve also seen it do 0-60 in 3.9 and the quarter in 12.3 @ 111.7mph stock. That’s insane

Not surprised a car that costs $12k more wins as the Elantra N matches up more with the VW GTI with the Elantra N winning that battle vs the GTI. Overall, super impressed with the Elantra N - especially from that rolling start.

Do you think the price has any reflection to the straight line performance? The Elantra N competes more with the Gti clubsport, not the Gti or Golf R. The EN makes almost the same power as the Golf R when both are on the same octane. The EN definitely doesn’t compete with the Gti

I raced my friends Stinger GT AWD multiple times at the drag strip and got him every time stock vs stock. However it was pretty close. The R launches much better. I beat his 60 foot every time

If we talking about numbers the new Z goes 0-60 in less than 3.5 sec, while the golf r is at 4.7 sec 0-60. It’s a good match up for the q50 3.0t though I’d like to see that golf r going for q50.

Notice the first roll race was at 32MPH start. The guy in the Golf R started in 3rd gear and the car had to kick down to 2nd. The second roll race was at 62MPH and Sam started in 3rd gear. Obviously the guy in the Golf R first roll race should've started in 2nd gear just like the guy in the Elantra N did.

That's crazy for first gear. Yeah, if you go back to 10:00 Sam mentioned the transmission and gearing but the Golf R driver allowed the car to go into 3rd gear before the cones while the N driver made sure his car was already in 2nd gear before the cones.

I just bought a EN DCT for just under 34k. I pick it up next week. Right across the street the Golf R is selling for 46k.. its a really nice car, but its 12k more. The difference is 12k, at least in the states.

Should of just done all rolls would have been much more entertaining. No point of doing digs with AWD R that’s it’s specially vs FWD EN have no chance. But you saw ona roll it can beat the R which is very impressive. All rolls would have been all close races.

@@layne4376 the Germans have very aggressive LC systems. When that is taken away it shows the real life speed. The mk8 R is still a quick car the Elantra N just punches above its weight. Also the R is a much more dynamic/fun car to drive with its new diff in the rear. It’s not a understeer fest anymore.

Man I have to say Sam, this video was a extra unique and you guys could have made it much much better. I say unique because none of the cars you guys have lined up against the N has every single one of these advantages, Power AND Weight AND AWD. I think it would be impossible to line up another competitor for the N and keep the money difference the same or less. Power, Weight and AWD. With that being said, instead of seeing three digs where the advantages of the R are even more evident, I think the there should have been a couple more of the rolls at the MPH the N took. Obviously there are some clear advantages the R has. Is the gearing at the MPH a clear advantage for the N? Or could something be done differently on the R to overcome it?

I’ll reply to my own comment; I did see an Elantra N for the first time at Nashville Cars and Coffee. The interior looks great and the car appears a solid value for the money. It’s just not competing for the same buyer as an R.

@@clintg6016v it's not the same market .. fwd vs awd .. the elantra is closer to a type r than the golf.. it is a street legal track car. in a straight line the r and elantra are really similar from a roll. Obviously AWD changes the game from a dig especially since the elantra launches badly. Put them on a track though and story will be different. So far the elantra is a full 4 seconds faster on laguna seca

You get what you pay for. The R cost 12k more msrp in the US. This car is meant to compete with the Civic SI and the GTI. There's no way I'm paying nearly 50k for a VW when I can get the N in the mid 30s but to each its own.

You shoud compare DCT version of Elantra N with Golf R. Compared with 6-speed 8-speed DCT EN which is cheaper by USD10,000 could win U-Drag and on tracks than Golf R.

@@joshuapounds7646 Yeah on the dig, the EN is never going to beat a comparably powered car with AWD. With the wheel hop it's a mixed bag on how good of a start you'll get, but even the best one they're going to be at least 2 car lengths behind from the start. We saw it here plain as day. The NGS can't make that up on a short run. Obviously it could have been the edge that let it beat the VW on the roll, but tough to say.

I wasn't expecting anything less.. At all.. I mean, the torque, HP of the R... I mean, those should mean something right.. It's also not a fwd.. So yeah, good win.. And the Elantra performed super well for it's specs and price.. Oh it performed well.. For the most part, you would not need to race it like this.. If you want to take it to the track, then either get an R, or spend extra getting it beefed up

The Golf is FAR more a drivers car now. The AWD system can be put into drift mode putting more power to either rear wheel making it a lot more than just a straight line killer. It’s just another thing the Hyundai can’t do.

I didn't expect The Elantra N to be faster on the 50kph roll race than the MK8 Golf R eventhough the Golf R is way faster from a dig obviously due to AWD . Very interesting race and was fun to watch. On a track, I think the Elantra N could still be very close or even better than the Golf R.

The Golf R was coming back on the top end of the 50 roll. I wish they did another roll race or two for better measure. The Golf R traps higher and puts down quicker times from a roll. The Elantra N has shorter ratios than the R, that’s one reason why it does so well down low for the power it has. The R has longer ratios and that’s why it traps 110-113mph stock

@@aono335 the GOLF R started in the wrong gear on the first roll race. second one it won easily. The GOLF R also was using automatic mode where it doesnt use full power like the N does. Full power comes with manual paddle shifters on the R where they dint use because people mess up a lot. The R is just the faster car

@@aono335 not sure I’d say way more power. Look what they make on the dyno. Thing is not all dynos are the same and most of the time people don’t mention what dyno they used. But the difference isn’t huge. Still, the Golf R traps higher and it’s the faster car

Atleast the N won 1 race🙏 That 2nd roll race really shows that up in the power band the R is on boil, it won going away. I'm sure it wouldn't have mattered much but I would've liked to have seen the usual EN used in these videos just for consistency sakes. Tip of the cap to that R...thing is FAST and my God with a tune, look the F out🏁🏁

With a tune and all sorts of modding the golf R is no longer viable. It becomes way to expensive (it already is very expensive) and at that point I'd much rather buy an M4

One thing you need to also keep in mind is on a roll they used automatic mode which favors the N. The way the N is tuned it used more boost and power on automatic mode unlike the golf R where You make maximum power using paddle shifters but there is more room for mistake. If the Golf R used paddle shifters it would have been Gone. Matt Watson did a good example of this. He made two separate videos of golf R vs type R. In the first video the golf R used paddle shifters and gapped the type R. Later on they made another video where the golf r and type R racer but this time golf R was on automatic mode like this video and the hey were head to head instead of the Golf r winning. So they did give the N every advantage on a roll here but the golf r was clearly still the faster car. This should surprise u as the R Dynoed at 340 HP. So as the race goes longer the R would win more and more

Unlike the Elantra v wrx video why didn’t we redo the race 57 times until the Elantra got the perfect start? He said he was wheel spinning? Why didn’t we redo?

The R slaughtered the N from the dig as expected awd launch. That R is fast, still love my EN tho

I mean it's 10 grand more car. It should. Throw 5 grand of tune into the Elantra with a motor mount for the wheel hop and it'll be on par or better....stock for stock it was never going to have a chance.

역시나 롤링이 아닝 드래그 레이스에서 전륜구동은 4륜구동을 이길 수가 없음...ㅋㅋㅋ 초반에 가속할 때 무게중심이 뒤로 쏠려서 휠스핀 때문에 손실이 너무 많이 일어남...
