The Honda CRF110, 125, 125 Big Wheel, and 250F are all air cooled EFI... For pure family trail riding these bikes are pretty much unmatched for beginners and pure recreation. But no jumping or high speed hits since that trail suspension is to soft... Honda does have a hole in their family friendly line up which the Kawasaki 140R F has a 33.9" Seat Height which is perfect for my 5.7" Wife. Unfortunately Honda has raised the bar with their air cooled 4 strokes being that they are all EFI now except for the little 50cc bike. But the Kawasaki should be perfect aside from potential carburetor issues with extreme elevation changes and if the gas goes bad from sitting to long without riding it... All of these bike will climb like Billy goats, have virtually no maintenance other than change the oil and put clean ethanol free gas in them. All of them have electric start, and have aftermarket head lights available. They are all on the heavy side when compared to moto cross bikes but don't fear that. The mild predictable and dependable power is what beginners and families ultimately are thankful for. I'm speaking from experience. I'm 41, married, and have 6 kids. All of which have the fore mentioned bikes.

It's sad there's not a better choice bike tbh. The wr or rx chassis with an engine like the klr traits but 400ish cc would be the ultimate trail bike. Basically a modern xr400.

I'm 52 years old, 6' tall and I started on an 08 CRF 250X and like a dummy I sold it and bought an 06 CRF 250R. BIG MISTAKE. I then sold that and I now have an 06 yz250f and I really like this bike, but to answer the question, I wish I still had my 250x. This bike was an absolute amazing bike to learn on. The electric start is a game changer. My buddy also has a yx 230 f, and also a great bike to learn on. Good luck and ride safe.

Started riding again at 64 and bought my beloved ‘06 250x,,,, but I love my KTM XCW 300 even more. Designed for enduro it does everything perfectly and it pulls like a tractor at low rpms.

Great video Sam, you got me thinking about my history on bikes. I'll start with my recent return to riding after many years away. I just bought a KLX 300 duel sport. After decades away from off road and now being 51, I still have the instinct and ability, but maybe not the reflex and durability I once had. Day 2 and for those who know the Fraser Valley area in British Columbia, I've been up the West side of Stave lake and to Weaver lake up the West side of Harrison. This bike was an awesome choice for me. This bike is like baby bear, not to hard, not to soft, it's just right. Here's my ride history. 1979 Honda Z50, 1983 Honda XR80, my favourite dirt bike a 1985 Kawasaki KDX200, 1990 KX250. Then onto the street, 1985 Honda VF500. My favourite street bike 1988 Honda 650 hawk. And finally my last full street bike, a 1996 VFR750.

I started on a Yamaha 50cc, then moved up to an 80cc, then a 150, all "play bikes"... so long ago I can't remember the models. I finally landed on a Yamaha IT 465 which I sold a few years ago, that thing was an absolute beast... My dad had an IT490, we both road endless hours in Rampart Range in Colorado. Fun memories.

Rode from 7-18 yrs old. Again in early to mid 30s. Back at it at 52. Woods and trail riding a 22 ktm 300 xcw tpi. Love it. Ditched stock silencer for a pro circuit spark arrestor can and it runs far better. It’s a tractor just like ya said.

Started on a mini bike. ha. 73 Yamaha ct 3 175 enduro that grew my love for riding off road. Looong stretch of not riding because of health issues. At 68 riding again on a 2013 Ktm 200 xc-w & loving it. Your buddy Kyle ( with some of your input) help narrow it down to that bike. So I do appreciate all of the advice.

Im in the process of buying a Kawasaki 230. My friend was showing me how to ride Saturday and 125 was just way too small but his YZ250F with the power difference was not just there it presented itself. Accidentally popped the front wheel up so once on the ground I stalled it and fell but eventually got riding and it was exhilarating. He recommended the 230 as a first bike. My goal is to work my way from dirt bike to adventure bike.

I am still a beginner and bought my first dirt bike at age 54 to ride with my 13year old son. I bought an XR250 for my first bike and then got a great deal on on XR 400. It’s challenging but fun as well. I would really like fuel injection and electric start though.

I own a 2009 ktm 250 Excf. The bike is very reliable and isn’t too tall. Super good low end torque, very decent top end power. Trust the older ktm 250 Excfs are the way to go if ur learning. I did more or less start on a crf 230 and if ur a kid that’s a good option, but if ur over 170lbs definitely get a 250

I started on an '84 Suzuki PE175. Great bike to start out on. It had a mellow and linear power curve. It could also boogie when you were hard on the clutch and throttle. I do wish the Big 4 would put out a simple 2 stroke. I would recommend a 2 stroke to someone starting out for the simplicity of the engine. They tend to be lighter and are very easy to work on.

Started on a Chinese 70cc then went to a TTR 90, rode friends XR100s and KLX125s then to a TTR225 (before they made the 230) and I’m glad I did. Learned all the fundamentals really well on it and then got a YZ125 which I still have. I had a chance to ride a friends CRF250X and was impressed but I love my 2stroke YZ, The trail bikes are slower and have limited suspension but are excellent for learning.

I just bought a 2002 ttr225! Still has the original set of pirelli tires, so the bike has been used very little since being built. Pretty excited to learn on it.

Can’t agree enough on the “don’t get a 450”. My friend has one and it legitimately scares me. You can crack the throttle on the street in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th and your front wheel WILL come up. They’re amazing machines. But the most fun I’ve ever had on a trail, to be completely honest, was an electric dirt bike. Struggle free riding. Zero maintenance or carb issues. No noise. No oil. No gas. Ridiculously light. Easy to bail. To find a gas bike that does that, idk. Doesn’t really exist. But I’d probably go with a YZ250FX or a KTM XC 250 or 300.

Yeah 450's are a beast to handle. Electric bikes are sooo fun and we loved our Freeride EXC the battery life just wasn't enough for our rides. My favorite bike of all time is the 250XC....its the best do it all bike in my opinion. If I could only choose 1 4 stroke bike to ride it would be the 2021 YZ250FX

I bought a kxf 450 as a first bike for trail riding and enduro.. i must say i was dissapointed in power, i hoped it had more on it as everybody makes it seem super powerful.... had no issue riding it for 2 weeks and i will admit its a handful probably not everybody can ride it but me personally i wish it had at least twice the power🤣 if not three times so now looking at the 700cc enduro bikes... bad bits about the 450 damn hard to start once it overheats and and not ideal to learn tricks as it feels heavy... rode the 300 250 and 125 two stroke and they defenetly felt underpowered compared to my 450 and that made me feel abit better ( made me think my 450 motor was healthy) and made me feel abit sad as i hoped my 450 engine needs a rebuild and thats why is so slow🤣. Good bits i could ride the 450 monster torque up any slopes on trails and that feelt great

I now have a '21 Xtrainer. This was an upgrade from a KX 100. The xtrainer is a GREAT bike! It is just so easy to ride, lightweight, nimble, handles great. Thanks for showing it in your lineup. Great video.

Yeah the XTRAINER is a sleeper bike and probably the best beginner - to intermediate dirt bike for single track.

@@davidb9323 i don't think it would be anywhere near as powerful as a 450 and because it has been detuned, its very manageable, linear and torquey. No powerband hit. Easy to ride.

@@davidb9323 it comes with a plastic skid plate that works pretty well. The pipe does tend to get a bit bashed up. I think Radiator guards are a good idea.

This is excellent advice. All the best pure trail bikes have been covered for beginner riders. I would also include some of the dual sport bikes. They are good if you need to connect with trails using public roads. The plate is nice if you live in places with strictly enforced laws. They will not perform as well as these dedicated trail bikes in stock form, but will be quite adequate for most riders. With suspension upgrades you can turn them into very competent trail bikes.

They really are great beginner bikes. The best part of those bikes is that they are about half the price of the xtrainer. For someone just getting into it, that's a lot of money to spend.

I started on a yz80 in the 80's. Moved up to a yz125 and then yz250. There were no trail bikes other than dual sport type motorcycles back then. I have currently moved back to a 125 after 40 years of riding. It suits my style better and I figure there is a slight chance I could ride it at 100% of its potential something that is impossible on any big bore bike for us mere mortals.

My BEST recommendation for a beginner dirt bike, is a Sur Ron. If you saw me ride one off road, you’d think I’d been around dirt bikes before. If you saw me on my WR250 off road, you’d think I was just learning to ride a motorcycle.

I started out a Xpro Titan 250 but I have ridden mopeds all my life my Xpro was the first manual 5 speed I have driven on a dirt bike before just one catch to these Xpro xmotos bikes if anyone is interested when buying these I recommend changing the spark plugs when you first get them

@@dirtbikesam yeah only problem I have seen with my Xpro Titan is on the KZbin videos they say the brake caliper tends to break off to me that could happen with any dirt bike only real thing I have noticed is they don't tell you is the bike has a 3 choke setting it has to be all the way up to start which is full choke and then started is all the way down is no choke

Yeah the Xpro Titan ant a bad bike for the price but I will admit that it is more cold natured than the 125 Xpro my wife owns so yes I have been starting my bike out in the middle on choke setting cuz it is easy to flood out only way to fixed it once it is flooded is by removing the spark plug and spraying carburetor cleaner on it and restarting it I have even installed a two prong battery tender on mine to keep the battery charged up

I just got the xpro Templar M 250. Geared super low and have 70 miles on it so far. Feels so weird with the big 21” wheel coming from road bikes! With that centripetal force feels like it will never fall down. Waiting for the trails to dry up a bit. Got it plated and trail tags - first dirt bike.

Started on a klx230r. Didn't understand how good of a bike it was to start on until I upgraded. Engine is really down tuned to keep it running cool and control the power. Suspension is softer but not like a dual sport. This bike started first turn over every single time. Rpm's are programmed high and on flats you can pop the clutch (no throttle) and it will not stall. Moved up to a yz250fx and detuned the engine with extra fuel and delayed timing to get it back to the performance of the klx so I could start from where I left off.

Im still a beginner i currently ride a yz125x but have been lucky enough to try a lot of different bikes i would say thay were all rideable except for the rmz450 it was way to much and i stalled it a lot definitely for me the yz125x is the best all round bike for me but i enjoyed every from a xr100 to yz250

I have a 98 cr500 and others but the sr250s 2022 SSR has outdone themselves in my opinion especially if you're looking for just a nice trail bike it has six speeds can crawl it at 5 miles an hour has the NC 250 motor goes up to 80 mph does amazing on Trails does really well on the roads it's a pretty impressive bike and it has a 21 inch front tire 18-in back tire electric and kickstart 38in seat height has plenty of power to get up any hill climbs and does great on Long rides would be a good beginners bike

I started out on a Honda Xr200 when I was 12 then when I was 16 movers to a Honda CRF230 both were great trail bikes and that’s mainly what I do is mountains. Now that being said I haven’t road in over ten years and looking to get back into trail riding and leaning towards the KLX300R as I am a bigger guy have experience but I think a 450 is overkill for trail use.

Yeah the KLX300 has larger suspension and is liquid cooled. I think the only downside is they are heavy but I think is a solid choice.

Iv gotta say the KLX300R is an outstanding trail bike for everything outside of enduro single track. Everywhere else the power, clutch, efi mapping, suspension is just smooth and it needs nothing but gas to ride. Responds well to aftermarket power upgrades too. Xtrainer is my favorite single track bike, its like cheating and it somehow got a rap of "beginner" bike cuz of price but finally getting some love for normal trail riders and Vet guys who just want to enjoy riding instead of racing.

@4:30 2t vs 4t on the trail. I went from a 22tpi te150i to a 22 yz250fx. The fx needed a few things, flywheel, throttle cam, hymec clutch and suspension revalve front + back. I doubt I will consider owning 2T again after this. The YZFX was less expensive even after the tuning for rough single track style riding. 4t is the new 2t, simple, affordable, low maintenance long lifespan, high mpg to boot over tpi/2t bikes. Wish I could have them all though.

Did mostly the same on my 2020 yz250fx. Haven't done the flywheel yet... gotten pretty good with controlling clutch slipping and modulation for the gnar. A set of gummy's does wonders on the climbs. Finally, helped to detune the engine a lot.

I started on a old 83' KDX 400 smoker. I rode the 2022 Beta 300 RR yesterday. First thing is the seat will eat you up, second was the how mild and even the power band was compared to my 250XC. My 250XC is pretty strong all the way through, it's pretty eager to get on it. It felt so tame, almost too tame coming from my KTM. It's quieter and just a tame feeling bike. I liked it, but I felt older on it....haha. Needless to say, I'm shopping for a newer KTM 250XC or a 300 if I can find a decent deal. I'm ready to move to electric start, tired kicking my bike a ledge or climb, especially with a long and stiff kick stroke like my bike. Anyhow subbed, not sure if you're in NM or CO; just got back Wolf Creek snowboarding a few weeks back. Good trip, needed it to last longer.

I really like the beta 200RR but if I could only have one bike it would be a 250XC to me it’s the best so it all bike and with the newer ones with fuel injection makes them even better in my opinion. Hope you find a great deal on a 250 or 300xc. I liked my 300xc bikes but I just like the 250 motor more. I’m in Utah and actually responding to you up at our cabin where we do lots of backcountry snowboarding. Love pretty much any of the newer bikes engine-wise...keep in mind the same sadist designs all the seats for ktm, beta, gasgas, etc...pretty much a concrete mold with vinyl stretched over it.

My very first dirt bike is my 2017 KTM 350 SX-F. Not really the right bike to start on, but it makes you learn quick! I love riding it, but it's just not really a good tight/technical trail bike, at least not for me. My son has a DRZ250, and that thing just lugs right along. I think I might sell mine and look at getting a 2 stroke.

@@dirtbikesam I’m thinking either a Honda CR250, or a Yamaha YZ250x. Or if I stick to a 4 stroke, maybe a CRF250L so I can drive to the trails, or CRF250F, or a 250 from another manufacturer. I’m new to all of this, so just starting to do research on what might suits me best. All I know is I’ll be sticking to something used to keep the cost down (hoping to sell my KTM and have a bit of pocket change left), but good used bikes seem difficult to find here.

My first bike was a 97 XR400. Very heavy and super hard to kick at 5'8 and 150 lbs. I then went to a 2003 KLX300R. This bike was fantastic to learn on but was heavy and would tire me out really fast. Just this year I bought I Rieju 200 Ranger. It's effortless. I absolutely love it! Rieju doesn't get mentioned enough since they took over GasGas manufacturing. Check em out.

I personally like the crf 250f it’s a 23 but it’s green sticker and very easy to learn on just like the ktm I can ride it on a higher gear and won’t kill the bike but that’s my personal opinion

Great video overall with tons of info. One thing is that I disagree that the KTM 150XCW is a beginner bike. It requires a LOT of clutch finesse and keeping it revved up. You can't be lazy to ride that bike well. The 300XCW is actually easier to ride because it can lug. You could talk about the used market like old XRs. The XR 200-250 were indestructible goats to learn on.

I live in the mountains which can really be challenging, I had everything from a beginner bike like you suggested in the beginning and you are spot on with your take on em'! I started out on a TTR230, it was a great beginner bike, moved up too fast to a Kawasaki KX250 2 stroke which earned me my nickname, too much whisky throttle by water holes made for a dripping wet day lol, my all time favorite bike I ever owned was a 2003 RM125, just felt like the bike and I were one with each other!

Yeah mountains can be humbling for the single track riders and not having a hard enduro specific bike makes it tricky to ride. Man sounds like that RM was a gem of a bike. It’s fun to find a bike that makes you feel like there is no difference between you and the bike!

Question- Not beginner rider but I've been away for awhile...whats the best choice? Grew up on dirt bikes, sport bikes in early 20s. Then 25 years of adulting without a motorcycle at all. Now (50 years old) riding a Versys 650 (good bike to knock the rust off the skills) but upgrading this year to Ducati supersport 950 or Aprilia RS660. Getting my 16 year old son into riding. Most likely Kawasaki 140RF or Honda CRF125FBW for him. For me, I was looking at KLX 300R or Honda CRF250F but concerned I might out grow them quick...would Beta Xtrainer be better or are they similar? Not looking to race but not afraid of a challenge.

So if I could only have one bike a 250XC is the best do it all hike in my opinion. If you just ride single track then the 150 XCW is great! And I like the how nimble the 150XCW is in the woods. Also the 150 allows you to learn better techniques and doesn’t rip your arms off. Both are great bikes but if you don’t really ride moto or desert stuff the 150XCW is what I would choose.

I have a DRZ 400 which aint bad to learn on if you're big. Things a damn horse though So you'd better be like 200 pounds 6' tall and pretty strong. I'm definitely saving my pennies for a KTM 300 XCW though.

I personally like the 250 motor better as it is more of a free revving motor however I typically get a 250xc for most of my riding but if all I did was ride gnarly single track I would stick with the 300XCW. But…typically you can find better deals on the 250’s and the gap between the 2 isn’t all that big on the XCW. The resell value is better on a 300 but you pay more so it’s a wash. It you can want a tractor then go to 300 but if you want a 4x4 truck that as a bit more options go 250

I have seen good riders riding the Ttr230 and the crf250f beat riders on higher performance bikes in hare scramble races. Enjoyed your video and I agree stay away from the 450's for a beginner bike.I have seen experienced riders getting hurt on a 450 because of too much power.

Good video but quite honestly i don't think a 300 2 stroke is beginner friendly at all. Yes it might be very luggable and easier to ride / get over obstacles at first but once a beginner gets to a bit faster paste / more open terrain it will literally rip his arms out. If we're talking about first and second gear lugging around, being lazy sure a beginner is gonna have fun with that but at 3rd gear and upwards a beginner is only going to be a passenger to the bike... Not to mention you will most likely always rely on the power to get you through technical obstacles and not actually learn proper technique / clutching... Most people i've heard from that started on a 300 2t (or god forbid 450 4t) regret it to this day and whish they started smaller. Because once you realize that you never learned the right technique, the only way to learn it is to take a step back and buy a smaller bike to learn on which can be... frustrating. So yeah in conclusion i'd say as a beginner get a ktm 150 2t / beta 200 2t / yamaha 250 4t / sherco 300 4t but not more cc than that

I'm 18 and I've grown up riding quads and stuff with a clutch but I've never owned a dirt bike and I'm looking for something for the trails but also I live by silver lake sand dunes so I'd like something to ride up there. I'd ride 2 or 4 stroke. Got any recommendations?

The dunes are a whole different beast as sand really asks a lot out of a bike in the power and suspension department. Lots of guys prefer the 4 strokes in the sand as they tend to stay more planted while a 2 strokes rear tire wonders searching for traction. My favorite desert bike is the 2021 YZ250FX

(BEGINNER - HELP) I am 6 foot and close to 190 lbs but my parents say a 250 4 stroke is too powerful but any other bike that is less powerful like a trail bike (ttr230) is too small people say. Is a 34 inch seat height really that much of a difference from a full size 27 inch. Im kind of stuck because the only full size bikes that will fit me are "too powerfull" :/ what do i do?

@@fru1tyju1ce78 The TTR230 is a really easy bike to learn on but standing up on it which is important a full-size dirt bike will be easier to stand up on. Bikes like the Yamaha WR250 are a little less powerful than the motocross and cross-country versions. To me you can always sell the bike down the road as you get more experience. So either bike would work.

TTR230 or CRF250F are solid options and great trail bikes. Yeah there are lots of misconceptions around 2 strokes. Or if you want a bigger full size bike then the WR250

I haven’t ridden the 22’ and newer CRF450RX but you have to remember that the RX are closely related to the motocross bikes which make them a handful. A rekluse will help manage the power going in slow terrain as you don’t have to use the clutch. It’s considered a closed course race bike. Where do you plan on riding and how much time do you sped riding?

It would be used in northern Minnesota trails mostly with an occasional trip elsewhere. Usually riding for the day. Pretty casual trails but you can find some good terrain as well.

Yes that's how I'd describe alot of the trails here, big enough for sxs's and atvs, lots of variety as far as mud, rocks, and sand/dirt. I've been on atvs and utvs the last few years and was thinking about a new experience with dirtbikes. That's what drew me to your video originally.

I had one, coming off a dual sport and it wasnt a good bike unless u rode race speed 100% of the time. Jerky throttle and harsh suspension on slow rocks/roots. Its definitely a race bike

The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

@@dirtbikesam I just got a new one with a GET ECU and and believe me it's as powerful as the YZ. Amazing bike but it's a bit of work on the slow, round terrain. Not what the wr used to be 😬 it's pretty much a MX bike now. They screwed all the customers in favor of stupid reviewers I'm guessing.

It's gentle and plush, but now I miss the sharp and precise handling of the MX setup😂😅. So I might actually go back to it. There's just no pleasing some people 😉🤣
