We care about the safety cell where the passengers are which did great. Buckling of the rear absorbs crash energy. You can see this in some cars as well.

I thought it was gonna get a poor because of that buckling in the rear but it was rated Good, feels like buckling of the 2014 Honda Odyssey but worse

@@clintsmith3460 It buckled because of the forces travelling through the structure, not really a big deal that buckling. It would not pose a problem since the crash results are always extrapolated for a worse scenario, i.e. if the car reaches a treshold regarding deformation, structure separation etc., it will not get the GOOD.

that fared a lot better than the ford. wonder why the center airbag was so delayed
@glanzera
@glanzera Ай бұрын
Airbags don't all automatically deploy together. Each individual airbag has thousands and thousands of parameters from many sensors that determine deployment.
@wraith78
@wraith78 Ай бұрын
Probably designed to be delayed so it stays fully inflated for the driver’s rebound movement backwards, after striking the front ones. I suspect to prevent driver’s and passenger’s heads from hitting one another.
@parkergray5346
@parkergray5346 Ай бұрын
If I had to guess it’s either purposefully delayed for some reason I can’t think of right now, or it only deployed after sensors detected the vehicle moving sideways which might cause the occupants to possibly move side to side and collide

Probably when the vehicle sensed that it was rotating that it decided to deploy the center airbag

The buckling effect at the rear kinda reminds me of when they did I believe it was the 2021 or 23 Camry where people was talking about how the C pillar behind the rear quarter window “which is one of my favorite things about the 8th gen Camry” I luv the way that quarter window is designed😌but anyway yeah people talked about that and now this to so I’m wondering if the buckling is a good thing I believe it is because it’s absorbing the force but that’s just me🤷‍♂️

Notice how much better it did on the driver's side than on the passenger's side (G vs A). GM clearly did not expect a passenger side test and only engineered the driver's side to pass the test (previous-generation Grand Cherokee did the same thing with an even more pronounced difference). This is the difference between a safe vehicle (pretty much anything European, Mazda) and a vehicle designed to pass very specific tests (GM, Toyota, Honda, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru). The same reason the moderate overlap rear passenger safety is Poor.

People don’t understand that a large suv is usually not safer when hitting a stationary object. The weight of an suv is very hard to slow down and safety is reduced. They are only slightly safer when hitting a smaller vehicle. Of course though you are more likely to lose control of a large vehicle which means you’re more likely to have a wreck to begin with than if you were in car. Of course it depends on vehicle manufacturer too though. You’re much more likely to walk away from an accident in a European suv than you would in an American tin can suv, as shown here.

I guess IIHS knows best but what's on display here is pretty concerning. It's not just "some buckling", when the front wheel gets pushed back the whole side of the car gets pushed in with the driver's seat getting a jolt inward. That doesn't look "good" to me, may be fine at this 40mph test but it doesn't give confidence about the car's safety in other situations.
