I like it, but as you mention there wasn't a lot wrong with the old model. Nothing wrong with a fresher look though with better infotainment etc. I do like the load bay cover mechanism though as we have so many magpies looking to liberate your stuff on one hand and a bunch of others looking to offload garbage on the other.

It is actually all new and the mechanicals have been thoroughly revised and updated. Slightly less hp from the 2.0 Ecoblue but revised timing belts and injectors plus detailed changes to the emissions systems. The 10 speed automatic has a new torque converter and revised internal shafts, bearings and seals in critical places found to be weak points on earlier incarnations. Plus the firmware and interactions between various major components is changed. It is truly a brand new vehicle from front to back and top to bottom. The chassis is totally new and so is the body and suspension. The build quality is superb but the tow bar is removable, which is good, but is a slack fit and prone to rattle.
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesshesketh1 I know but what a pain in the butt! So 1970’s. It doesn’t actually need to be slack, it just is and the only reason to slacken the bolt is to stop it wearing the bolt and its end being riveted. There are gadgets that replace the pin and pull the drawbar tight to the side of the frame but that is a Heath Robinson type solution to a problem that shouldn’t exist in the first place.
@paulcook6635

Think you will find that there is a fix for the rattle from the removable tow bar. Looks like a u clamp device.
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 Жыл бұрын
@@paulcook6635 Shouldn’t need an aftermarket fix at the owner’s expense. Yes there is a type of device that pulls the drawbar hard to the side of its frame, the box section, utilising the hole used normally for the plain pin. Very Heath Robinson as a solution to a problem that should not and until now did not exist on our hitches.

no it isn't. it's a refresh. the chassis and core suspension is the same. wider hubs provide more track width. the suspenion mounting points for the front end were pushed 50mm further forward. That's basically it from a physical POV. it's an interior and sheet metal update. nothing wrong with that. oh and it also introduced a lot of beta-stage software and firmware. SO many corrupted and incomplete integrations in this generation. Anyone who can competently use forscan can se for themselves...
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 Жыл бұрын
@@simonr23 The chassis isn’t anything like the same, apart from being a conventional box section type. I can assure you that it is totally new. Further, the software on the vehicle is new, the displays are totally new and I have no issues with any of it apart from the disabled keyless entry in the UK which is for theft prevention and insurance rating purposes. No doubt there will be software updates and my friend’s week old Ranger’s software is very slightly different to mine, but most people would not tell the difference.

Not sure how many Rangers are sold in the UK but in Australia year to date the Ranger has outsold the Qasqhai 10:1 - these are basically the replacement family vehicle for the Commodore/Falcon
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 Жыл бұрын
I believe that Ford have been selling about 20,000 Rangers annually in the UK out of 60,000 sold across Europe, which isn’t bad going. With this New Generation and with reduced competition [Mercedes, Fiat, Mitsubishi and Nissan have stopped selling pickups in this class] the only thing that will limit sales this year are supply and the general economy. More supply constraints than anything as the V6, unless ordered already, has a twelve month wait. More chance getting a VW currently as they are about to be launched [July 2023] and have not had many customer orders as yet. That will soon change. Large Ford dealers tend not to have stock on New Generation for immediate delivery although they do have a few of the previous model lying around. Unless they have unsold stock orders on the way, the wait is a long one for a factory order. My own large Transit/Ranger specialist distributor has no unsold V6 stock orders left so any new prospective owners have a very long wait. I believe they do have a few 2.0 Wildtraks left in various colours but with the combined tow and tech pack plus 20” wheels and electric bed covers. Personally I would prefer having the ‘power pack’ and tow pack with surround cameras to 20” wheels but there you go.

I liked the next Gen Ranger that much that I brought a 2023.5 wildtrack V6 turbo diesel here in Australia & should have it in about 6 weeks. I certainly didn’t have any complaints about so called hard plastic in some places & the gear box doesn’t hunt for gears in the V6 diesel as per the presenters comments about the twin turbo 4 cylinder engine the you get in the UK. With 184 kw & 600 Nm of torque from the V6, it goes very well even in stock form .

I have a huge problem. Here in Poland I can still buy the previous model for 200 000 zł ($49 000) and the new model for 250 000 zł ($61 500). Both 2.0l 205 KM, 10-speed automatic, Limited trim level. The price difference is a significant amount of money. I'm not going to sell this truck so it will probably stay in the family for 15 years. The new model has a separate 4x4 mode (4A) that can be used on normal roads just like in modern SUVs. It will engage 4x4 when losing traction. Plus the new car has a nicer infotainment system with wireless android auto and apple carplay instead of a wired one. Than again the old model is also quite capable, 1/4 cheaper and available to buy right now. For the new model I'll have to wait about 4 months. While choosing a pick-up truck I also driven the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-max. The Hilux doesn't really care about comfort. It's loud and the people in the back seat are tossed around like a sack of potatoes. Also I just couldn't find a comfortable driving position - my knee was constantly pressed against a rock hard console. It does have a big 2.8 l engine though and the start/stop system was quite smooth. The Isuzu D-max was more civilized but in my country it's sold only with a weak 1,9 l 160 KM engine and the car is quite sluggish. Either way I'll buy a Ford Ranger. I just don't know if the newer model is $12 000 better than the old one. I still haven't driven one, I'm waiting for my local dealer to get a demo car.
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 Жыл бұрын
It depends on how much importance you place on the 4A option and the really quite superb technology in the new one. As in Poland there are a few of the old models unsold in the UK at a significant saving but since I intend to keep it for at least ten years, possibly longer as long as I am capable of using it in my old age, I bought the new generation. I already have a 2.2 Limited bought new in 2014 and it continues to work hard. Do please consider waxing the chassis thoroughly inside and out while brand new and clean and also buying cheap grommets to fill the holes in the chassis sides facing the wheels. The big pipe with open ends can be blanked using aerosol can tops cut to fit on the older model and with the top of 20 litre chemical plastic cans in the larger pipe of the new generation. These can be sealed in place with Tiger Seal or equivalent mastic glue/sealer. There’s plenty of ventilation even when the big openings at the outer ends are completely sealed to prevent dirt and road spray and salt entering.

@@Crsf84 I tend to keep them until they are scrapped. It’s a business tool. I’m flexible though but my 9.5 year old Ranger sailed through its MOT yesterday. The day before, because my pressure washer has broken down, I took it to a manned car wash. The lads took one look and mentioned that it was so dirty it would cost a tenner. Half way through and sweating like pigs they asked if I minded paying £15 due to the easily 25kgs or more mud and shite that they were hosing off and the water they used, which all had to be paid to dispose of. It really does look as if it has just come out of the showroom as new now, at least on the outside. The inside is still covered in dust with a layer of mud and grit on the front floor. It will do for another five years and 150,000 total hard miles, I’m sure.

If you have ever visited rural Europe you would know why full size pickups don’t suit here even before you looked at the price of fuel. Not that the Ranger is that much smaller than the F150 and while the payload and towing capacity of base 4x4 F150 is substantially lower than that of pickups sold in Europe, which mostly have a metric ton payload and tow 3500kgs as standard. There are few 4x4 exceptions and the Raptor and equivalent VW Amarok are just about the only ones, appealing almost exclusively to rich people as toys.

I have a 2014 and a new 2023 and have spent a couple of days, off and on, underneath the cars waxing my chassis. There is not much in common and the paintwork and even some standard waxing from the factory on the new one is far superior. It's a shame, also, that for this money you don't get a flip-down ladder built-into the tailgate (as per the Ford F150 in the US). This would make it far easier to step up into the bed while the tailgate is down and is genuinely useful if you're working with these vehicles (as I do). The new side-step to the bed is okay but is completely useless when your hands are full. Most of us don't have arms that a 160cm long so we actually have to get up into the bed in order to load or unload heavy items placed close to the cab (where they'll end up anyway if you brake hard). The Ranger doesn't have a decent (useful) folding back seat design either. This has the same (almost useless) tilting backrest and flip up bench rear seat design as my 2015 model. The American-spec Toyota Tacoma shows how the back seat should fold and is way more useful (and better built) and I was really, really hoping that Ford would fix this in the new Ranger. For a vehicle that doesn't have a boot/trunk where you can easily reach your shopping or some toolboxes that you want to keep in the cab but don't want to mark the seats, it would really help if the back seats folded flat and had a hard plastic/rubber surface to put things on. Especially if they're substantial. Don't get me wrong - I like the Ranger. I still run both of the previous generations (European models) and like the new dashboard and some of the new features. But the basics could be so much better and would really have provided useful reasons to upgrade. As Rebecca says, the previous model was already pretty good (and quite a bit cheaper). Other than the things I've complained about, I love my previous generation Ranger. Some love the new American-style grille and headlamps. I'm not one of them, though - to me the new Amarok (and previous generation Ranger) look more classy and less brash. 🙂 If you're venturing off road (as I do regularly), the underside of the new Ranger is more likely to ground out on a lumpy surface. The extra width (which also makes it better to drive) is one reason. The wheelbase is the other. Other than that, like the previous model, it's very good off road. On road it's better than the previous model, I think. It's very quiet for a pickup - a least in the higher spec versions.
@Crsf84

@appstratum9747
@appstratum9747 Жыл бұрын
@@Crsf84 Obviously you've not used a Ranger for serious work. I do every day. Good luck with jumping up on the bed with heavy kit, mate. Or getting it out from just behind the cab. You may have arms that a 2 metres or 6 feet long (bed length plus tailgate). I don't. Opening and closing the tailgate while standing on the rear step just to get at stuff is a royal pain - you end up stepping over the closed tailgate to grab stuff from the back of the bed and closing it again to slide it out and get it on the ground before carrying it. With every single item. Loading and unloading heavy kit isn't a particular joy when you have to do this a dozen times on a run. And mate.... trust me... especially when you work off road or drive at high speed, you put all the heavy stuff just behind the cab. Not close to the tailgate. Unless you're an idiot, of course, just begging to know what happens to your vehicle (and that stuff) when it all flies forward when you least expect it. I would absolutely love to see you hop in and out of a Ranger's bed over the tailgate on a daily basis while carrying 30kg / 66lb of tools, cement or large tubs of paint in your hands. And do that on a regular basis without ending up busting the tailgate, busting what you're carrying or busting some part of your body. We've ended up carrying portable steps in the bed to avoid that eventuality. Which works fine as long as you're on solid and level ground - but not so well otherwise. And mate, we have vans too. They're designed with side doors and low interior floors for that very reason. Rangers aren't. The shorter F150 versions aren't appreciably bigger than the Ranger at all, incidentally. Here in Europe, the Ranger bed on a utility/work vehicle can be longer than that on a shorter F150 double cab. If you need better access to behind the cab you use a drop-side bed and chassis cab (as we do on some of our pickups). But the downside there is that this is still not great for heavy tubs of liquid - which are designed to be carried hanging from your hands and not lifted or squeezed. The other downside is that the tray is a lot heavier (because it's more robust than the factory bed) so the mass/weight of what you can carry takes a substantial hit due to your fixed gross vehicle weight. You pay for that weight (and boxiness) in fuel. Had you read further than you did, you'd have noticed that I explained why the Ranger's step (or steps, if you have a model with a rear step) are inadequate. The key words were "...useless when your hands are full". The rear step is useless anyway when you have the tailgate down because it's covered by the lowered tailgate. Please feel free to stop reading whenever you like. Those of us who use these things every day for real work really won't care much.

Anyone who does faff about with any physical controls of any type that requires refocussing to the centre instrument controls while driving is an idiot. It just isn’t required while driving.

That A10 auto gearbox is so bad, hunting gears, slow pick-up from start.... I would never buy this car again just because of that gearbox.... I have spend days and days in the Ford Dealership complaining about it... how it shifts or does not pending the weather temp... Flatout a bad gearbox design , or its controller.... I asked for a new shiftmap, yet that does not seem to exist. The dealer always comes back with this BS story... It self learning and adapts to your driving style.... hmmmm I think I must be a terrible driver then.... So, once a Ford , never again...

Not a joint effort. It's a Ford, with the VW just a version tailored to feel like a VW based on VW's requests to Ford, and then Ford build it for them.

Unusually for Rebecca, I've marked this one as thumbs down for that nonsense at the end about it being a "Winner" - NO! Ford should be disgusted with itself - for the "non-VAT pricing", for the laggy tech, for the interior trim, and most of all, for the seriously out-of-date mechanicals, FOR £47000!!!
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 Жыл бұрын
The tech is no more laggy than anything else and I can compare it to the current Volvo, BMW X7 and Kia Sorento. The price isn’t too bad considering that the latest top of the range four cylinder Formotion VW Golf costs over £50,000. However I quite agree that unless you have a VAT registered business and can offset some of the cost against tax for that business, and don’t need a ton carrying and three point five ton towing, a pickup truck is probably not the best of vehicle choices for anyone. It is obviously not for you.

Err work? Landscapers, tree surgeons, blind installers, sparkies, I know a lad who comes out and fits window tint who drives one. Gas engineers, plumbers, carpenters ect. If you're self employed or don't want to own both a van and a car or need an all rounder. Something that you can load up with tool boxes and blinds or wood or whatever and get you, your girlfriend and your kids then then what else are you going to have aside from a Discovery or Defender or something but then you get into the same argument as size. I know some people who just own a 3.5 van and that's infinitely more impractical than a pickup or a Defender or something. I've actually never owned a pickup because I have a car and a Defender so there's not much point but I've only ever driven big vehicles and if you're used to them then they're really not that difficult. I drive the Defender around Liverpool City centre and the narrow roads of Liverpool and Manchester, as well as taking to Scotland and on hikes and camping trips and on building sites and so on the point I'm making is they're really not as difficult to live with in the UK as people imagine. Plus the potholes in this country, they're actually far more practical than some little go kart of a fiesta or Golf or something
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 Жыл бұрын
Farmers and plant operators, tree surgeons, civil engineers and vets are the biggest customers for new pickups, though not exclusively so, all of which either tow large loads, carry heavy loads and/or need the offroad ability. At certain times of year here in Wales, up to every fifth vehicle is a pickup or large SUV towing trailers of all kinds. Mostly rural machinery or livestock. They used to be mostly Land Rover Defenders but are now overwhelmingly the more versatile and available and more reasonably priced dual cab one ton pickup. Ranger is the biggest seller with Toyota and Isuzu not far behind. Ssangyong is coming up fast with a lower price and a lower body which is attractive to a lot of potential customers.

I drive one as a works vehicle, I undertake abnormal load surveys over roads, across farmland, many into remote locations, I can get all the kit I need in the tub and still have a very nice vehicle to use as a family carrier.
