Thanks for the detailed video. I am comforted to know if my wife leaves me, takes all my stuff and half my pay check for the rest of my life. There is still a car I will be able to afford. While I cannot speak for all the sad sacks. I would like to say, nice job Mitsubishi.

Bro, I got so excited when I received the notification for this video! Crazy how a Mirage review is so much more appealing to me than a McLaren review! Expensive cars that I can never afford are so boring to watch! On the other hand, I love affordable new cars like the Mirage! Thanks for reviewing affordable new cars!

I have the exact car. I bought as a daily commuter but have driven several road trips all around Florida. I just hit 10,000 miles on my 2023 and it is perfect for what I bought it for. One surprise is that it can cruise at 80 MPG just a bit below 3,000 RPM.

Well done review. It's nice to hear the Mirage getting some love and fair review for an honest car. I beat the dogshit out of my 1st Mirage 2014 cvt doing uber, after a hard 100k gig miles it was still running like a top. After 130k miles I had to replace the brakes, spark plugs, 1x wheel bearing, serpentine belt, the usual perishables, and I had the driver door lock actuator start to act up. But zero powertrain issues. 0W-20 full synth and cvt fluid changes are key.

I think this car is very good and definitely fast enough for highway driving. It actually drives best between 55 and 85 miles an hour (engine is vibration free then because of the balance shaft). It can go up to 110 miles per hour, but I would not recommend that. 90 miles an hour is still comfortable, but not faster. And the way you drive this car is NOT what it is designed for. It wants a gentle foot and gives (for me) on average over 8 years driving 60 mpg in return (I cannot go over 60=national speed limit in my country). I rarely ever exceed 2000 rpm even during acceleration. I clocked my Mirage with CVT at 11.5 seconds from 0-60 miles per hour with GPS and for good measure also top speed 107 miles per hour (also GPS). Worth noting, 8 years, 85.000 miles, zero defects, not even a light bulb broke, no rattles, squeeks, vibrations, nothing. Original battery and brake pads still. Mine is full options. The factory options also keep working flawlessly.

Can't express how much I love this little car unique simple and reliable. I wouldn't mind buying two one in cvt and the other in manual. I've heard of some with the cvt reaching 200k or more because the 3 cylinder engine doesn't put much strain on it.

I had two 2013 LA models in Sydney Australia. Used both with a friend for Uber. The one i had was written off by a truck and it had 271,000km and it still had much life in it. Ultra reliable! I replaced it with a 2014 LS version. It came with cruise control and climate control. Currently has 203,000km on it and again, ultra reliable. I use Michelin green 185 55 R15 for the tyres and no kidding they last just over 100,000km as i personally rotated them. Who would know all models come with electronic steering so no fluid changes. You mentioned steering was not too great. I tend to disagree. Many people are surprised as to how to "smooth" it travels.

After owning 3 Mirages a 2015 Mirage ES, 2017 Mirage G4 SE and my 2021 Mirage SE I can tell you they have improved. My 2021 Mirage compared to my 2015 Mirage has a much smoother idle, much better sound insulation for NVH-rubber trim around windshield-engine bay fender blocks for reduced NVH and more, better performing a/c and much quieter a/c compressor when first turning it on, improved brakes, updated suspension-steering tuning and feel, many many more features, much better seat fabrics, better gauge cluster on upper trims, 15 inch wheels on (BE & SE), LED lights front and rear on SE and just rear LED lights on all other trims, added cloth on doors and door arm rests (BE & SE), better over look inside and out and better quality. They really have improved them quite a bit from the 2014-2015 Mirages. Alot of the updates came for the 2017 model year Mirage and Mirage G4. But even going from my 2017 Mirage G4 to my 2021 Mirage I found several changes and improvements when examining it inside out. The 2021-2023 Mirages are the best ones yet with styling improvements and major interior enhancements on the upper trim SE for people who want a loaded Mirage and better interior. With the SE you get high quality seat materials that look sharp and have a plaid material with leatherette bolsters and contrast stitching and piping, padding and cloth on front door panels and door panel arm rests with simulated carbon fiber trim, much nicer gauge cluster, push button start and keyless access, heated seats, better safety features and more. Plus the exterior on the SE with its LED headlights and DRLs, fog lights, 2 tone 15 inch alloys and its red grill strips really make it look better than lower trim Mirages. The ES trim is the best value for sure especially on 2023s as so many features are standard but if you are considering the LE or BE please be sure to look at an SE inside out first to see all the improvements for not much more money and the seats material, heated seats, lit multi color gauges, fog lights, LED headlights, and push start alone are well worth the additional money especially when going from the BE to the SE as the SE is only $700.00 more and you gain all the things listed above!you just get so much more. Now if want the best deal then go with the ES. But its nice that on the 2023 Mirage from the base trim Mirage ES all the way up to the top trim Mirage SE there is only a $1,900.00 difference. I wish will could find an SE to review to really see the much improved interior and exterior look but I know they are harder to find but on cars.com there are lots of brand new 2023 ones that have been shipped to dealers.

What is your thoughts on the cvt as being the only available choice? I was really hoping for a manual 2023 but I guess it's not possible. I wanted the slight economy, power control, and simplicity (repair costs) of a manual. I also wanted a manual for my GF daughter to learn with. Ughh. Scares me to to think of a Jatco CVT failing and costing a fortune more than the car is worth to repair. My closest Mitsubishi dealer is 1 hour away or more. I'm skeptical of the Mitsubishi dealers. Now....I have Caterpillar Mitsubishi heavy equipment that I use the Cat dealer for so no worries there. I'm in the mountains and the manual is so much better in an economy car. Grrrrr. Oh. Another question. What is a rough monthly payment for car insurance on these things? Near 40 years old to age 50 between me and GF. Thanks

@@technicalitems731 Hello there. I love the CVT and it does really well with the 3 cylinder. I have owned 3 now and the CVTs have been good, my co worker has owned 3 also and one was 5 years old. All CVTs. It can hold its own on hills easily with the CVT. Sure the manuals are more peppy for sure. I know they are Jatco and they had issues in the past but oddly they are very reliable in the Mirage. The CVT 7 has been pretty good reliability wise especially in the Mirage and its tuning and such low HP. Also the Ds mode really makes it peppy especially on pull out. I personally think with CVTs a big part is maintaining them and doing fluid changes every 30,000-40,000 miles. We have full coverage with Erie and Im 37 and my Husband is 50 and we pay $600.00 a year for the 21 Mirage SE and $698.00 a year for the 19 Eclipse Cross SEL. We have been with Erie forever. We pay quarterly at $325.00 for both vehicles. Now just the Mirage if I divide mine by 12 months would be $50.00 a month but probably a lil more like $55.00 a month cause they charge a lil more if you pay monthly.

Great cars. I have owned 3 Mirages starting with a 2015 Mirage ES (base was DE top trim was ES for 2014-2015) with Navigation and Back Up Camera Package, 2017 Mirage G4 SE top trim, and now own my 2021 Mirage SE top trim. You get a 10 year warranty, amazing MPG well above the MPG sticker numbers especially on the highway, tons of features even on the base trim ES. Going even for the top trim Mirage SE you can actually get in the car for under $21,000.00 after destination, tax, title and tags. If its a good dealer you can get in it for just under the $20,000.00 mark out the door for a top trim Mirage SE. Also you get features like push button start, keyless entry and keyless access, heated seats, 15 inch alloys, led headlights, led drl running lights, led tail lights, upgraded multicolor lit gauge cluster, auto climate control, forward collision with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, auto high beams, auto head lights, rain sensing wipers, fog lights, premium stitched plaid cloths seats with leatherette bolsters and backings with contrast piping, fold down driver seat arm rest, cloth inserts on front doors and door arm rests, and more. The top trim SE is very nicely equipped for a subcompact. Even the base ES car has power windows, locks, mirrors, keyless entry with key start, a/c, auto climate control, rear view camera, cruise, bluetooth, and audio controls on steering wheel, 7 inch touch screen with apple car play and android auto, and more. I personally prefer a small car and after my 2nd Mirage I went to a brand new 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL Touring top trim and loved it but missed a small car so after a year and a half traded it on my fully loaded 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE. The Mirage has very high owner satisfaction and most people who own them love them and have purchased 2nd and 3rd ones even. My co worker Kay is on her 3rd one as well and has owned a 2015 Mirage ES, 2019 Mirage G4 SE and now has a 2021 Mirage G4 SE and have been her favorite cars shes ever owned and she is 81 now and still works full time. You have to look at each Subcompact and see what fits you best and what you like best about each one and for 2023 you only have 3 choices the Mitsubishi Mirage, Nissan Versa, and Kia Rio as the Chevy Spark and Hyundai Accent bowed out after 2022. Yes the Versa starts out cheaper thats true but if you compare the base Versa to the base Mirage and do apples 🍎 to 🍎 both with automatic transmissions the Mirage ES CVT under cuts the Versa S CVT in price at $17,290.00 with destination and the 2023 Versa S CVT at $18,495.00 with destination. Thats a good bit higher if you are on a tight budget and cant drive a stick and have to purchase an automatic. The Kia Rio LX CVT automatic comes in at $16,505.00 with destination and is much closer to the Mirage in price and only $215.00 more than a Mirage where the Versa is $1,205.00 more with an automatic. However the base Mirage ES CVT is better equipped than the base Rio LX giving you standard apple car play and android auto and standard forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection so keep that in mind also. If you go for a top trim you cannot get heated seats in the Rio at all even on the top trim Rio S with Technology package. The top trim Versa SR is extremely well equipped and looks great and has a ton of neat features and with destination cost $20,815.00 and you even get a wireless charger, full center console arm rest, half digital gauges and customizable screen, 8 inch touch screen, remote start and more and its the trim Versa I would personally go with. Now a top trim Mirage SE comes it at $19,500.00 with destination and the welcome package and tonneau cover it automatically adds so its $315.00 cheaper then a top trim Versa SR but in the Versa SR for 2023 you get more features that are unheard of in such a small car even giving you rear forward collision mitigation, blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert its like wow! In my opinion its worth that extra $315.00. However you get the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on the Mirage that the Versa does not have but the Kia Rio does. A top trim loaded Rio S with Technology package comes in at 20,085.00 with destination and comes well equipped but you just cannot get heated seats here in the USA which sucks for a top trim model and you get that in the Versa SR and Mirage SE. However you do get a lot of other cool features on the Rio S Technology and if you live somewhere you don’t need or use heated seats then it will not matter. I am a Mitsubishi person and would still go with the Mirage but its all in preference and it pays to check out the Mirage, Versa and Rio in comparable trims and see what you like best. But the new styling of the 2023 Nissan Versa SR and all the additional features would make me take a hard look when I go to trade my 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE on another new Mirage in 2024. My choice will be between a loaded Mirage or loaded Versa. One important thing to mention!!! I urge you to take a long hard look at the recalls for fire related issues and engine issues on any Kia/Hyundai products before purchasing. Look at owners stories and perspectives, online news stores and actual recalls. My cousin purchased a brand new Kia Sportage about 4 years back and within a year it burst into flames while driving home with his daughter and they got out but the vehicle was engulfed in the middle of the road. On a brand new car thats pretty scary and something you should not have to worry about. Its a major issue with them and so are engine issues as my sister is experiencing right now on her 2018 Kia Optima S using oil like crazy virtually using all its oil between oil changes and Kia keeps doing consumption tests over and over and over but will not replace the engine and its under warranty. So just be sure to really research before you buy a vehicle so it can truly be a happy and fun thing as it should be! I will say though with all these issues you see you do not really hear about them with the Kia Rio but still do some checking and don’t take my word for it. We used to always buy brand new Kia and Hyundai cars every 2-3 years and were great cars and had several such as a 2002 Kia Rio, 2003 Hyundai Accent GT, 2008 Hyundai Sonata GLS, 2010 Kia Soul Exclaim, and a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS. However the 2013 Hyundai Elantra was plagued with constant issues from not starting and being towed 2 to 3 times, would get stuck in park and had to use a screw driver and the shift lock button to get it out of park, had the steering rack replaced due to clunking and knocking, timing belt replaced, strange engine whining noise at startup and was random, and more. All of this in the first year and a half and we finally got rid of it with 13,000 miles on it. After that we switched to Mitsubishi and have loved them ever since. We have owned 6 Mitsubishis from a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES, 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT, 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE, two 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL Tourings, and a 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE and all have been great vehicles. We will likely be purchasing a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL Touring to replace our other 2019 Eclipse Cross this spring when Winter is over. So from personally experience, my dad owning a 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SE, my brother owning a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE and 6 coworkers owning a Mitsubishis at my work I can only say good things about Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi tends to use time tested and proven engines and designs much longer than most manufacturers and in turn works all the bugs out and are more reliable. The Mirages 3A92 1.2L 3 cylinder engine came out in 2012 overseas for the 2013 model year and has proven to be an extremely reliable simple engine that is not overly complex and is made to last and it has proven its reliability since it has been out in the USA since 2013 as a 2014 model. So again be sure to research whatever car you are looking to buy from all aspects to make your purchase one you will not regret. Thanks 😊

I chuckled at the commrnt sbout the tiny 15" wheels. Up until yhe early 2000's 15" wheels were the standard fare on even large cars like Lincoln and half ton pickup trucks. I am seriously considering a Mirage G4 es simply because the owner reviews are so good compared to mainstream media reviews which are so negative.( The "It's not a Toyota" mentality). A brutally honest car that is a luxury machine compared to the subcompacts of the 70s,80s,90s.

I bought a 2014 Mirage new for $11,900. It was loaded. At that price is was totally worth it. You're right it's slow as molasses, noisy, and it handles like a wet mop, but there were a lot of aspects I liked about it. The great fuel economy. The tight turning radius and maneuverability. It was also surprisingly comfy and roomy for such a cheap and tiny car. With all that said, I can't fathom paying today's MSRP for this thing. Not worth it for much over $15k. Get a Rio instead. It'll feel like a BMW in comparison.
@kylemas2005
@kylemas2005 Жыл бұрын
An OTD price on a Rio, if you can even find one, is easily going to be $4k to $5k over the OTD price of a top-spec SE trim Mirage. I know because I called around different KIA dealers to get a total price, most would just say come in and hang up. The 4 that did email me a bill of sale, the lowest OTD price I got was $24.6k for a base Rio. Dealer mark ups are insane now and won't be getting cheaper. $18k for a Mirage might sound like too much but it's stacked with safety and tech amenities now, for an econobox, to make up some of difference. My old 2014 Mirage didn't have an Alpine 7" touchscreen, or a better supporting 6 way adjustable seat, it didn't have cruise control, pedestrian detection, crash avoidance camera, Bluetooth, or Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. It did oddly though, have auto HVAC like my current 2021 ES has. That's the last thing you'd expect to find in an econobox lol. With all this new added tech plus a solid reputation for reliability, $16k would be a fair total price for a base CVT Mirage but dealer markups are insane because they're holding all the cards now so I knew when my wife needed a new Mirage G4, we were going to over pay by a couple thousand. It is what it is.

Rios are in such short supply. Not that there's a ton of Mirage's in my area either. There are 2 Mitsu dealerships in my city and at any given time they have fewer than 5 Mirage's between them. They're always priced over MSRP. Dealers further away seem to have some better deals, at least with what they're advertising. It's just hard for me to step out of a nice Elantra that I paid $19,400 out the door brand new in 2018 down to a Mirage for more money since I'd want the top SE. I keep putting off buying hoping prices will come down eventually. I started looked around at what that kind of money can buy in a relatively low mileage used car less 10yrs old. Quite some nice options, but it's also hard for me to fathom spending $20k on a used car. I don't think I'll be satisfied paying anything at current prices.

@palebeachbum Elantra is a great car. It competes well with the Civic or Corolla IMO. I remember you were one of the 1st to own a Mirage and post about it. Thank you for that. You'd be amazed how much the Mirage has improved since the 1st gen came out in 2013. Performance wise not much though besides a little more HP (74 to 78) and bigger front brakes. Electronics though have made big strides IMO and seat comfort too.

I'm looking forward to test driving a new Mirage to see how it compares to my 2014. I know they've tweaked and improved it over the years. Do you notice the extra 4hp? The brakes on mine definitely needed to be stronger. I had a couple of near accidents and realized how weak the brakes were. Scary! So I'm glad to hear the newer ones have better brakes. Mine had the basic radio, which I was fine with at the time. I was simply thrilled I could play my music from a USB stick. First car I had with that feature. Back then, I preferred it over the optional $2,000 navigation head unit offered. After purchasing my Mirage and trading in my Nissan, they had to order it. So in the meantime they loaned me a new Mirage off the lot that had the navi unit. Back then, I really didn't like it. I just wasn't used to having a big glowing screen in my face at night. I hated that. My Elantra was the first car I've owned with a touchscreen head unit and I ended up loving it since it automatically dimmed at night and had a button to turn the screen off, if desired. Came in very handy being able to use Google Maps. I also appreciated having a backup camera for the first time. Worked great in situations where I was parked between taller vehicles and needed to back out, as it let's you see more with the fisheye camera lens.

@palebeachbum Mitsubishi doesn't cheap out with the touch screen. They're all Alpines for all models including the new Outlander. The Mirage gets a 7" Alpine, perfect size and very easy to reach, it too has auto dim for night time driving. It's not the fanciest touchscreen but it's well made, has a volume knob (thank god), and responds quickly to touches.

I have this one but in sedan variant with the 5 speed manual. Spent 6k miles so far and I have nothing to dislike about. It does what it supposed to do. Excellent value. Why spend more $$ on inflated used basic mode of transportation when you don’t have to AND can get the BRAND NEW Mirage for MSRP OR LESS, especially when being the only driver? The Mirage has already proven to be economical in fuel and cost of ownership. Let the ownership’s review speak for itself which has more weight than just car reviewer. New tires can be had for sub $350 install which is great.

I own a 2015 Mirage with the CVT, been OK, averaging 40-42 mpg till lately its been down a bit to around 36 mpg probably because of a downstream O2 Sensor (P0137 Code), not easy to get to since it is pointing up above the exhaust just past the converter. I drive mostly highway, Changed oil every 3-4K and air filter and CVT full exchange at approx. every 30 K miles, and replaced the 2 transmission filters at same time. Plugs were replaced at 100K along with serpentine belt. Has 123K mikes, runs OK, but slight smell of exhaust in cabin. All the negative reviews by car gurus do not do it justice.

Surprised Mitsu added those fender flares on the black edition, as they do seem like an afterthought. The ES is the only trim that makes sense to buy in my opinion. The Kia Rio hatch starts to make more sense when you compare higher Mirage trims. Unless you are Kia-averse or have to have the higher MPG. But I do love the Mirage for what it is. Reminds me of a Geo Metro / Suzuki Swift that was sold in the US many moons ago.😆Cheap, efficient, easy to park, egg-shaped, reasonably practical!

It's a shame the Mirage has been discontinued in Australia. The sedan model only lasted 2 years. Mitsubishi Australia only advertised the Mirage when it was first released with 3 models. The base ES, GL and SE models. After the advertising stopped so did sales. The range was reduced to just one model about 5 years ago. They were a great small car but unless you knew about it or saw one on the road it was never bought up in the Auto media. Mitsubishi Australia now only have The ASX (Outlander Sport), Outlander, Eclipse Cross, Triton Ute (truck to you guys) and the Pajero Sport which is based on the Triton Ute base into a wagon. However, Mitsubishi Australia still keep sales into the top 5 in Australia with the Triton and Outlander always in the top sales numbers.

@@nomdeplume2724 Not in Australia mate. Mitsubishi constantly rate in the top 5 selling brands here. Thats in the top 5 of nearly 50 car brands on sale in Australia. Mitsubishi have 5 models 7 if you count the EV models separately. The Mirage range has only just been discontinued due to safety concerns on side impacts. The Mitsubishi Express van which is really a Renault van facelifted scored poorly also and was dropped from the range but the Renault it is based on is still on sale. Mitsubishi still have the Triton which is currently the 3rd bestselling Ute here, the Outlander petrol or PHEV, the Eclipse petrol or PHEV, the ASX and the Pajero Sport.New models are being released this year for the Triton and later the Pajero Sport. When Mitsubishi were building cars here in Adelaide Australia, they did export cars to many countries including the UK, Saudi,, Arabia, South Africa, New Zealand, The United States, Asia and Japan. Due to high costs in Australia it was deemed uncomical to continue build cars here especially after it took on an American designed car to sell to the Australian market. The factory closed in 2008 but sales have continued with the import market. I firmly believe one reason Mitsubishi failed in the UK was the lack of promoting the brand. If it isn't promoted it doesn't sell. However with the amount of Shogun (Pajero) and L200 (Triton) models I see in videos some promoting must have been done. The Uk now misses out on some very good reliable cars and its a shame.

Well, it would be if it didn't use Jatco's CVT automatic transmission. No one works on them. Ask around at Nissan dealerships, don't be surprised when they tell you they have nearly 100 in stock in case customers need a new one. (Not joking. Nearest Nissan dealer over by me has 91 in stock.) Tells you how "reliable" those Jatcos are. I nearly bought a Mirage sedan until I found out who provides the CVTs for their cars. No thank you. BTW, a new Jatco transmission (which can still fall apart on you later) is about $4K. And, that's just for the transmission. No including the labor costs of having the new one installed. $4K+Labor is no bargain on an entry-level priced vehicle.

Nissan UNDERspecced the jatco transmission in the versa. It's borderline too small for the car. Jatco builds high quality transmissions for millions of cars and heavy trucks, but it's up to the OEM to use the right one. In the Mitsubishi, this CVT is not stressed nearly as much as in the Nissan versa. They last a long time in the Mirage.
