Mid-March, the rains have been sparse and the reservoirs are low. The mountains in the Kantou area have several dams where rivers run to.This year, some lakes are nearly dry and the bare earth is visible. On the path, grasses and seeds have been cut together with some trees and fewer birds were there than usual. Still, the variety of Bullfinch found in Japan, as well as several winter flycatchers ( Daurian Redstart, Red-flanked Bluetails) and other small birds are there. The seeds they eat are mostly on the ground or, for the bullfinches, they eat tree buds. A small colony of great cormorants stays there regularly, as well as black kites circling to find food from the water edge. It is still rather cold for the lower mountains with no more than 8°C in the daytime and less than 0°C early morning.
