I do like how you mentioned just how good of a job Suzuki did on their first run of electronic suspension. They tend to be a bit late to the game but they get it right on the first trek into the market vs rushing to market and spending a couple year models dialing it in. They also manage to make everything at a better price point which always makes it more competitive. Even at a similar setup, you could upgrade the Suzuki exhaust and a flash and still be under the base price of the bimmer.

What a great comparison, a real reality check. I recently had an XR as a loaner and liked it. Now I really want some seat time on the GX. The GX seems to punch above it's weight and everyone loves an underdog. Suzuki have struggled with sales of some of their bikes for no good reason, I hope this is the success it deserves to be.

Thanks for yet another great team review guys! I can tell you first hand how much the Suzuki motor is hamstrung by stock ECU programming. I've re-programmed the ECU on my 2023 GT to remove the throttle limits that were imposed and got well over a second's difference in a quarter mile according to my GPS and better fuel mileage to boot!

@@LambChopRidesI acquired and used the Woolich Racing Log Box D-Can v3 on-bike harness which simply uses the existing obd2 port on the bike. It was evident to me looking at the stock maps that they seriously limited the power delivery after 8k RPM in all 3 modes along with RPM limit (11,800) and speed 'hard' limiting in each gear on the GT. Not sure about the stock settings on the GX though. The price is reasonable on the WRacing harness and software license. It allowed me to unlock the throttle responses after 8k RPM's, unlock the speed limiters and increase the rev limiter to be closer to the design specs of the motor. There was a nice gain on the mileage from 250km to 300km and I was able to decrease the fan activation temps. Another bonus is the glorious induction sound after 8k RPM that was not evident with the stock programming. I didn't touch the fuel or ignition mapping as they already looked quite linear in relation to throttle input and RPM relationships. I can share my maps if you're interested but I'm not sure if they'll work with the GX version of the ECU. I only mod my bikes and don't have access to a dyno so I road test. I'm no expert but there's a large difference in how hard it pulls with a much quicker quarter mile. My 'seat of the pants' estimate is about 25 or so ponies on a significantly higher top end which I've been too afraid to actually reach even though the bike feels very stable at high speed. I've been running it this way (sometimes a little hard) for a year now with no evident damage to the engine or change in how the quick shifter works. The traction control functions work a little harder as the bike power wheelies a bit now when it wouldn't before with TC on. Hope this helps..

Just a quick revision to my previous comments.. Now that the colder weather has hit us here in Canada, I've had to do some revisions to my ECU mapping. I was definitely running into a lean condition which abruptly reared it's ugly head in the colder air. I hadn't changed the fuel mapping before in warm weather thinking it was 'automatically' relative to TPS or IAP but it was definitely not! The ECU seemed to also be limiting power based on knock sensor readings which is a good thing and probably saved my engine. I ended up having to enrichen the injector timing above 8k RPM and 52% TPS by about up to 30% (which appears to be approximately the same as the rotational % the throttle body is opening over stock restrictions).. just wanted to give an update in case anyone else is planning on doing this.

According to gearingcommander, one tooth less on the front on the gx yields identical revs/speed ratio with the xr on 4th gear. Suzuki probably looked at the BMW - would seem smart, but for sure BMW studied the K5 when developing their I4. Haven't heard of any patent wars, so how close it is - who knows (probably Kevin Cameron). I have the 750 version of the K5 and what a beautiful thing. Looks are subjective, but the BMW looks like an NC750 that went to the gym. Not good IMO. The BMW is 7K more than the Suzuki - as you note in the intro. You could have the Suzuki for travel, and a Honda Hornet for blatting around town for the same scratch, or nice dinners with a loved one, or donate to a shelter, or those tattoos you've dreamed of, or.....

Nice review, which works really well pitching the bikes back and forth and coming to an overall conclusion. Unfortunately, I would not buy either because, as standard, these machines are for guys with long legs. I know you can spec the XR for the shorter legged rider, but that adds to the already exorbitant price of this machine. As regards the Suzuki I was tempted by the GT version because it has a much lower seat height, but after hearing about the ongoing saga with problematic cam chain rattle, I decided to give it a miss. Suzuki must have messed around with its original design because it was bullet proof in the earlier motors.

Oh no sorry to hear about the TIA buddy, Dad had those from his 50's every 5 years or so and is now 88!! So it's not all bad news 😁

Fun videos, but we need more SMC-R content. The most fun bike ever created just sits in the garage. Blasphemy 😂

Yes I know, it does get ridden but not on camera. Will do a vid on it soon 👍

@@LambChopRides I get it. Riding slow and legal is pretty much impossible on the SuMo.

Hey guys - you were taking my Suzuki review in isolation, I also said the XR was vibey (though far less than previous iterations of the bike).....I do know what a non-vibey 4 pot feels like as I ride one very regularly (My Z900)......despite that, loved your comparison as ever, even though the Suzuki is very close in the ride dynamically, could you put up with the looks? I think the XR is now quite handsome (and let's face it for a BMW that's a rare thing), and that may be worth the extra £4K alone...lovin' your work and appreciate the editing complexity in here....

Thanks Andy, wasn't knocking you buddy and forgot you had the Z900! Yeah actually Kawasaki are the exception to the rule regarding vibes, my H2 is the same. So it can be done 👍

Suzuki have always been the manufacturer of the well sorted everyman bike, never really excelling at any one thing, but great all round, the Busa being an exception. The Beamer may be a little more premium in every way, but that includes long term running costs, which are also going to be pretty high compared to the suki. Suzuki have always produced an approachable bike if doing your own work as well, less so on the Beamer. I suspect in longevity terms, the suki is the better option. As you have concluded here, there's little in it in terms of capability, I say save your pennies, get the suki and put your savings into something with the fun factor, mini-bike anyone? 😁

Great vid guys 👌👍 Looking forward to that Tracer vs GX comparison ✌️And why not a GS vs XR ?

I've actually sort of done the GS vs XR on my Germany tour vid series 👍

At those prices I would buy the Suzuki and get a nearly new Husqvarna 701 enduro with the change

Good review, it maybe worth delving deeper into residuals that you mentioned earlier in the video, maybe include a bit of data around how the previous models have suffered over 3 years, does a BMW really keep it's value over the Suzuki and does that allow for the initial cost difference and more premium components / fit and finish. My impression of Suzuki is that it is the less premium of the 4 big Japanese brands, not sure if that is a fair view, but it's based on my ownership over the years.

Would love a comparison between the GX and the Tracer 9GT+! Excellent review, but I'm a little surprised neither of you mentioned the nannying head shake sensor in the GX. One little wobble and it cuts the throttle. I triggered it 3 times on the test ride and thought it was faulty. Admittedly I'm 18 stone so maybe it that makes it wobble more when pushing on, but expected Chopsy would find it the same tbh...
@LambChopRidesАй бұрын
I've only ever triggered it on track at Cadwell Park, never on the road.. Was never triggered on this comparison.

@@LambChopRides I didn't have long to play with suspension settings, so I suspect I might have had the front too soft. All I did was turn it up to "luggage and pillion" mode. Do you reckon I could have made it less intrusive by adjusting the suspension manually instead of using the modes?

Suzuki 💪 always the underdog but always punch above their weight.

The lack of shift cam and the cost of the beemer put me off. If the S had shift cam that prioritised torque and not ultimate hp, then it would make a far better real-world machine.

Nice work Chopsy. Personally i love proper sport tourers. Love my Ninja 1000Sx. The Versys 1000 would be worth a run to eh?

Amazing to think, the Suzi has a K5 derived engine and the Beemer is only a few years old relatively speaking. Not that much difference in out right performance is there🤔
