If you hammer a petrol car along at 120km/h you won’t get anywhere near the claimed range (consumption) either! As a Model 3 owner I have some comments having extensively test driven both the Premium (single motor 82kWh) and Performance (dual motor 82kWh) Seal versions. The Seal is a “Grand Tourer” (Gran Turismo you called it). The BYD engineers have set the acceleration response and regenerative braking for comfort and smoothness. And to drive like a conventional automatic transmission instead of one pedal driving, which they believe is more efficient. The initial part of the brake pedal movement is still regenerative. One pedal driving in a Model 3 can be very uncomfortable for passengers if the driver is unskilled (or uncaring). Tesla has sacrificed material to save weight and the Model 3 feels noticeably flimsier than the Seal, both inside and out. Effectively the Seal is carrying the equivalent of 3 extra adults around. But the Seal feels more “premium” than the very spartan Tesla. I agree the Seal would benefit from having a warning chime when the Auto-steer disconnects and have the speed sign warning being visual rather than aural. These are both features of the current Tesla software standard and would be easy to implement in the Seal by way of an update. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both wireless in the Seal in my country (NZ). The fact the Seal has a driver’s display, HUD and indicator stalk is a plus in my book. That you compared it to the BMW, Hyundai and Polestar instead of just slavishly comparing to only the Tesla Model 3 is to your credit because I believe the Seal is more competition to those other cars. My test drives produced consumption of 142Wh/km for the single motor and 148Wh/km for the dual motor Seal over my standard 60km route (Tesla Model 3 is 130Wh/km over same route). It is mixed driving, so for the Performance model you drove I am likely to achieve 500+ km. Of note also is BYD have just announced the “Blade 2” battery with 180Wh/kg instead of 140Wh/kg for the current Blade Battery. So that would mean a range of 700km if they stick with the same weight battery, as well as retaining the advantages of the LFP chemistry.

Best Review I have seen. Well done. I love my BYD too. In Australia I got the Premium version (middle) for 56,000 AUD (34,000 EUR). Incredible price 62K AUD on road, 6K AUD government rebate. VERY Happy.

It looks and feels really great. Would be nice if they improved on the UI though. For example that beeping when you go beyond speed limit. 5 clicks to go through menus to disable it and you have to do it every time... On a Tesla it's 1 click.

Software route planning is non existing. It won't route through chargers or even tell me what battery % I can expect upon arrival Accelerator response is poor for a sporty version Serious flaws and absolutely not clickbaiting

A better route planner helps but he is no substitute for systems that integrate real battery percentage and dynamically calculate the range. Systems from Volvo Ford BMW and Tesla do this better

Good review. I recently bought the BYD Seal AWD and I am very happy so far. It's a great car, far superior to my previous ICE car. I am getting a much better range when driving ECO and not exceeding 100km/h on the highway. Mixing in with urban traffic I can get to a 500 km range for a full charge. Android Auto works fine without the cable.

We drove the Premium model, which is the middle model in the line up in Australia. It was very good, however I thought the Polestar 2 single motor long range was a better drive. It came down to price and the BYD is hard to beat beat at its price point. When it came to a novated the lease the BYD does not offer any discount, where the Polestar offered very generous deals. The Polestar will get my business. I am not a fan of fixed pricing.

Why dont you use the shortcut to turn off the sign recognition to remove the beeps? Just slide finger from top to bottom. Takes like 3 seconds that way.. You can adjust your own shortcuts also.

Nice review. Note that the small delay in gas pedal input is a feature not a bug, at least in China people prefer this as it otherwise makes passengers sick ... so it's a comfort issue. But sure, there should be a setting for that ideally, perhaps also adding one pedal driving .. both could be easily OTAd.

And with the delay in acceleration it does not make passengers sick? Don't know about that, because after the delay the acceleration still kicks really hard if you press the pedal a good amount

@@IceW4ve The idea is to minimize jerk under normal driving so the computer smooth the acceleration changes. This happens "naturally" with ICE cars because there is more inertia in the drive train unless you're talking about tuned performance cars that try to minimize that. It's also why some people don't like strong regen and one pedal driving because every minute change in foot pressure causes acceleration or deceleration. I tried that mode for a while but I settled to weakest regen instead and the drive is a lot smoother. But as I said, it should be trivial to have a slider in the car system where you could tune this as you wanted. I hear the Xiaomi has very good fine tuning of many parameters, not sure if they have one for input smoothing.

When I first drove the "new" Corsa back in 2003 it had a similar problem which was caused by the drive-by-wire system having delays, and I think this is a similar issue in this car. A driver can adjust to the responsiveness of the system, and drive comfortably, but having a delay is just downright annoying and potentially dangerous if you need to take evasive action to get out of trouble. BYD please fix this!

Thanks for the review, it's very interesting. I looked on your website and you haven't tested the Highland Model 3 Long Range...... It's a question that splits many motoring journalists but would you buy the Seal or the Model 3? There are things I like about both.

Great review - very detailed. I've always wondered why car reviewers don't review night driving as the headlights are an extremely important part of the car, and you completely overlook that aspect. I hear there is an autonomous high beam assistant like on the BMW. I wonder how well it works.

That's true. I found the headlights in the BYD Seal decent but not up to the level you get in a mercedes, BMW or even Polestar with their adaptive matrix LED lights.

Latest update the speed warning will not reset after car turn off. If using sport mode, the kwh will be higher even if you babied the padel. For good efficiency better to use normal or eco.

Bonjour. Je roule en BYD SEAL identique à celle de l'essai et ma consommation moyenne sue 3000 km en France avec route et autoroutes est de 16.4 kw au 100 km. je fais surtout des parcours de 250 à 450 km .Je ne recherche pas pendant ces parcours ce qui est très économique puisque je recharge à la maison. Je suis vraiment très satisfait de ce véhicule.

No one gets 500km at 120 kph travelling speed. The range is 530 WLTP, which is typically 20 to 30% above real world highway speeds in the best of conditions. I have yet to try an EV with real world 500km range at highway speed. Maybe the Model S long range, but even the model S Plaid was less than that.

My seal premium regularly has a range of 550 - 610klm .... no clue why your claimed range is a little over 300k's

Driving at 120 km/h or on a regular combined driving cycle? As the car only has 530 km off official WLTP range, it is hard to believe that you would get more than that. A typical highway range will be 25 to 35% below official WLTP

Not being able to give me a proper range is absolutely a serios flaw. So is turning off lane keep assist without warning as soon. As it hits 122kmph.

What all the so-called experts in the West seem to not understand, is that the Chinese never develop anything, except a long time ago maybe the gunpowder and the spaghetti, but they are experts on making cheap copies. Pure luck that Tesla got everything they wanted, and more, when building GF3? Of course not, the Chinese immediately bought Teslas as soon as production had started, and analyzed them into the smallest detail, and then their production could start. But what they still haven't been able to copy is the software. That's why they always are close, but never there. E.g. one-pedal driving, it takes more than just running the motor backward. Yes, you get regen, but never the instant breaking that a Tesla has. And the touchscreen response? Same thing. Yes, I think that eventually they will figure it out, but then Tesla has moved forward, and the Chinese, like every other copycat, will still be far behind. And then there's FSD and OTA...

I fully agree that they have a lot to learn on software and have highlighted several things in this video that could be done a lot better. However, do not disregard them, believing that they never innovate They are catching up quickly

But, as I said, this time they try to catch up with a moving target. EDIT: I forgot, I just found your channel, and i just love it. It is so different from most other, similar channels. Really not sure what you points are... "Pure luck that Tesla got everything they wanted"? Maybe we have a different interpretation of what "pure luck" means. Too bad for the rest o the world who can't even copy things right. Look at the Germans, the Japanese and Detroit, let alone the rest of the car making nations. Where the heck are their viable EV's? The only one that manages to have decent software is Tesla, even that is a painful growing process, and that is the nature of software. Who else has automotive software? And by software, which layer are you referring to? Are you referring to ADAS or the basic management or UI? Once you have someone in front of you, you are forever playing catch up. So again, what's your point?
