2024 Hummer EV SUV Towing Review: How Far Can It Tow?

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV is rated to tow 7,500 pounds and has an unloaded range of 314 miles. Jake put one to the test, towing his 7,000 pound racecar trailer to Summit Point Motorsports Park for a brutally-hot weekend of racing with NASA's Spec3. This #hummerev SUV is a 3X, so three motors that produce 830 HP and roughly 1,000 lb-ft of torque. What do you think - is #towing with an #electricvehicle feasible or not quite yet?

Agreed about weight. Great performance but the way to get there currently requires a ton of literal batteries (if not two).

Not quite ready for an EV yet, but I can appreciate this vehicle. Maybe one day I'll get an EV for a daily so the Bronco becomes a garage queen.

Whenever you are ready, make sure you have a charger at home. I would never own a ev without one.

At 9K lbs. that explains the lousy m/kWh. The Lightnings I’ve been driving typically deliver 2.1-2.3 in mixed driving, and as much as 3.0 in local usage. I recently used my gas F-250 to tow my trailer (similar size to yours, possibly lighter) to Road America and it was a 20 hour drive. That same trip in a Lightning would be nearly impossible to accomplish in a reasonable amount of time. My typical drive to Summit is 4.5 hours in my gasser, according to the native nav it would be north of 9 hours in the Lightning. You’re right about the torque - even after three years and 60K miles it still is a giggle and an adjustment when I’m in my Super Duty. Summit has a few L2 NACS chargers near the bathroom on Main.

The poor efficiency is way more about poor aero and chunky tires than it is about the weight. GMC Sierra EV and Hummer EV truck have the same battery pack and nearly identical vehicle weight, but the Sierra will go almost 100mi farther.

It's a mix of the weight and (moreso) the aero and tires. Curious to see the Silverado EV by comparison! Summit Point doesn't have any chargers right now :( they pulled them all out and are allegedly replacing them but no timeline on that yet.

@@OutMotorsports didn’t realize they pulled the chargers out, perhaps it’s part of the rehab the new owners are doing to the facility. Agreed on the aero, once you’ve got the mass moving, aero drag is your biggest issue. Given my trailer has 7’ ceilings (10’6” overall) it’s way worse than one with 6’6” interior height.

Towing with a diesel powered truck does not cut its range in half.

Actually, it probably does if the frontal is large enough. It's physics.. drag is exponential. My Expedition loses half its range while towing.

I love your channel and reviews but, I can't even identify with this mess called a truck. SGM here and I earn very well over the median home income in my state. Things like this monstrosity aren't even on my radar. I currently have a 2020 RAM 1500 and it's my tow vehicle. I would like a new truck but things like this are just a joke. The gut punch reality to EV's is - the country isn't set up UNLESS you're in an affluent, densely populated area. People in those areas don't tend to tow their boat to a lake 100 miles away to play on the weekend. Or a 6000lb camper to a national park 200 miles away. Or cruise them down gravel roads drinking a cold beer with someone they love until they find a spot to creep off for some alone time.

The Hummer EV is definitely a rich person's toy of sorts - the MSRP alone ensures that. And totally agreed with your point about EVs mostly working in more densely populated areas butttt we do know one couple who lives out west with one of these (the pickup version) and off-roads/camps with it often. If you have a Tesla NACS adapter and can use Superchargers, it opens up more options for where you can travel. The range when not towing is estimated at 314 miles and seems pretty accurate. All that said, EVs are still in their infancy and as battery tech evolves, hopefully we'll see cheaper, lighter vehicles and lower costs of entry.
