Good for you Tom. We all know Big Oil and anti EV trolls are retro- grouches. I have had an EV for 4 years. No gas, no oil, zero maintenance. No major hiccups a system reboot didn’t fix, like rebooting your iPad. Our daily driver within 300 mile radius. Anything longer, we have a 2016 Highlander hybrid. It’s been amazing and we will never go back to an ICE. We do charge at home, Level 2. Like you said, not for everyone. Hopefully prices will drop because many people are getting sick of paying $1,000 a month filling up their gas tanks and polluting the environment.

Your videos are full of fun facts. Take those four "dots" on the Hyundai steering wheel to signify the letter "H" in Morse code. I've owned 3 Hondas...and thanks to you, I've only NOW realised the four "pips" of the "keys in the ignition" warning are ALSO Morse code for the "H" in Honda! "The more you know..." Mahalo, Tom! I ended up finding a screaming deal on something else that will work for now. By the time I am ready to trade the new Bolt should be out and maybe a few other possibilities.

Excellent review Tom, appreciate your pragmatic approach to EV FUD! According to the Hyundai and Kia website's incentive page, when leasing it appears that Kona Electric is more expensive to lease than a comparable Ioniq 5 or EV6 at the moment (7/16/2024) and those vehicles are larger and have significantly faster DCFC performance.
@DrivenCarReviews4 ай бұрын
Yeah, those two are being pushed very hard at the moment. But I nearly pulled the trigger on a MINI Cooper SE a month ago when the lease payments were $250 a month including taxes. Mariko just said "no more 2-door cars" and that was that.

Something I just came across American History Did you know that in 1884 that the first production-standard electric car capable of being reproduced and sold to the public was unveiled? Did you know that in the early 1900s 1/3 of all vehicles on the road were electric? They started to quickly disappear around 1920 with the introduction of petrol and Henry Ford. Ferdinand Porsche - founder of the eponymous sports car-produced an electric vehicle called 'P' in 1898, before creating the world's first hybrid offering, which was powered by both electricity and a combustion engine. Mercedes-Benz also offered up an electric model called the Mercedes Mixte, in 1906. This car was adopted as a taxi in cities and was even developed into a race car in 1907. We are nearly seeing the reincarnation of old tech. The first pic is a group of working EV trucks in the UK plugged in in 1917. (no picture. non-postable)

Looks like a great city/suburb car, but that recharge time kind of rules it out (at least for me) for longer road trips. Range is less of an issue than time to recharge. Give me version that recharges in about 15 minutes or less and I'm VERY interested. Forty-three? Not so much.

I’m curious since you’ve driven the new Kona EV and the updated Niro, which also comes in a full EV, what do you think about the driving characteristics and interior space and seating and storage of both and which you would prefer?

To be perfectly honest with you, it was over a year between driving the two so it's very hard to compare the driving dynamics. But personally, I prefer the interior of the Kia (same with the exterior styling). But honestly if you're choosing between the two, just buy the one that speaks to you.. Because it's YOUR car.

I had my Kona for a few months now. No problems so far, other than meth heads stealing all the DC charger cables in town. Small side note the supply of Konas seems to be really small in the US. There was a couple months were local dealers in WA didn't get a new supply at all. They seem to have gotten a decent sized batch now, for the summer I guess, but no telling how long that will actually last. But without the factory discount I likely would not have bought it.

I had 45 minutes with the car to drive it and shoot the GoPro stuff. I had an extra hour with it to shoot the static exteriors and interiors. Yes, I have Cliff Notes, stuff like power figures, battery sizes and charging times. The other stuff is observational. I can work fast when need be. Looks are subjective... usually. 7 seconds is slower than many EVs these days. Just a fact.
