@Spec Of Tech - Newbie to your channel. Enjoyed your videos. Just subscribed & Liked. Really appreciate your candid professional evaluations and LOTs of information indeed. Learned a lot from your videos. Real value add...Kudos! Q1: For 2 story high ceilings in the living room (say ~24'), for a 5.2.4 or 7.2.4 Atmos config, are height speakers the only option since ceilings are too high? What happens if you do install ceiling speakers and crank it up? Q2: Incidentally, what are some of the best ceiling speakers (for Atmos) without breaking the bank? (I am currently using 4 SVS Height speakers at 12' high - not very ideal.) I came across some B&W Cinema series, KEF, etc. I find KEF's Uni-Q drivers play well with the "object-oriented" (directional) sound. Not sure if you had come across that in your experience or awareness.

Awesome tour and great setup, new sub. Just curious I have a really small room I'm turning into a HT. Acoustically transparent screen, 3 towers in behind for LCR. My dilemma is side surrounds as it's barely 10 feet wide, I'm assuming bipole would work best as opposed to monopole to prevent sound projectiles bouncing off the walls and being too direct causing localization. Thanks 🍁

When placing bipole speakers as side surrounds do you still place them at 90 degrees from the main listening position? Thanks for your advice!
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech Жыл бұрын
Yes sir, if you are using bi-poles you should have them at 90 degrees. One of the main purposes of a bi-pole is so that the speaker isn't firing directly into the ear of the person sitting closest to it. So you want the 2 "poles" to be firing slightly behind and slightly in front of that person. Essentially, so they are sitting off-axis to the firing drivers. Hope that helps, cheers.

Hi! A couple of questions... If I use bipolar speakers as side surround I have to consider them as normal speakers or should I put them in a different way? And...by considering that the listening point should be at the same height of LCR, if I have towers with a fixed height what happens?
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech Жыл бұрын
If you are using bipolar speakers just consider them as "normal", there is no need to change anything. When it comes to tweeter height the front stage is the most important to get as close to ear level as you can. The surrounds are often slightly higher so that they aim above the chair backs. Does that answer your question?

Feeling on in-ceiling speakers vs using bookshelves as the height speakers? And down firing vs direct?
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 2 жыл бұрын
Well it all depends on priorities. In-ceiling look much cleaner, and they do have offerings that you can direct the tweeter towards the listener, so that helps. For me personally, I used Klipsch outdoor speakers so that I could aim them directly at the seats. You should get a much more accurate spatial sound of you can aim the speakers at the listener vs at the floor. Long story short, if you want the cleanest looking set up, go with in-ceiling, if you want the best sounding, go with a setup that you can aim the speakers directly at the listener.
@NeilDuly
@NeilDuly 2 жыл бұрын
@@SpecOfTech Thanks, that was my thoughts, a lot of people here advocate for down-firing speakers aimed at the floor, which makes no sense to me. Sound is priority and any option will be as annoying as the other, so I am likely going for bookshelf speakers on a bracket to aim them.

height channels are great unless they used correctly. I find most of the height speakers on the market are designed for huge rooms. They just seem to fire over ones head! So going with adjustable brackets or better still ball joint connectors would be the way to go. great video! I want to set up a 5.2.4 system with a denon 4400 receiver...My couch doesnt sit against the back wall..there are at least 8 feet between couch and the back wall. So for atmos I have 2 SVS Prime elevation speakers which I will mount on the front wall as high as possible lining up with the Left front speaker and Right front speaker as you mentioned. For the other 2 atmos I have either a par of ELAC debut which I could put on top of the surrounds OR I have a spare pair of small bookshelf speakers from paradigm I could use...I could mount these bookshelf speakers at the back of the room high on the back wall angled down I guess-lined up with the front speakers. I know the idea is to get the optimal angle or would I be better off with the ELAC bouncing sound on the ceiling behind me? I think the 2 most important atmos speakers are at the front. Suggestions? Thanks so much
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Erik thanks for watching and the comment. Here is the thing about Atmos module reflection type speakers, they work, sort of. The best option for height channels is to have an actual speaker in the height position. Putting them high on the wall is a great spot, and will work, but ideally, you want them physically on the ceiling angled towards you. I hope this answers your question...cheers. P.S. For a smooth back to front or front to back panning effect for heights, the back is just as important as the front height channel. Ideally, you should be equal distance to the front and back heights.

@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 2 жыл бұрын
There definitely isn't anything wrong with doing that. Are you running them with a subwoofer and a crossover, or no subwoofer no crossover? If you are running them with a subwoofer and a crossover you won't be using them near their potential. The front stage makes complete sense to be full range, but the surrounds don't get used nearly as much during movies for big sound effects. The odd time they are, but seldom. All that said, I am a believer in building your system to however YOU want it, so if you want tower speakers all around you, then I say go for it.

Yeah that is what the Dolby document recommends. When running an Atmos setup the side surrounds shouldn't be 2ft above ear level either. That is one aspect I missed in this video. So an Atmos setup they recommend a monopole speaker and just slightly above ear level. Hope that helps.

Ignore what Dolby says. Dipole or bipole sounds better on the side surrounds then mono. The object based atmos crap is a load of bs and doesn't work. Mono's on the sides are are two distracting and in your ear. If you want to use Mono's for sides place them on the floor and fire towards the ceiling.

7:18 Ideally you want all bed layer speakers at ear level per Dolby atmos installation guidelines (page 6 describes it, page 8 shows elevation view), assuming your seat won't block the sound from rear speakers.
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 4 жыл бұрын
If you go to the Dolby website and click on the side surround speakers, they state quite clearly to "place them just above ear level". The common number that I found to be used was 2 feet, but Dolby wasn't specific. The rear speakers almost always need to be higher as well to get above the back of the seat. That isn't to say that ear level is bad though, it will work just fine as well.
@strobez38
@strobez38 4 жыл бұрын
@@SpecOfTech The old traditional 5.1 and 7.1 setups, dolby recommends the sides to be just above ear level. Now with Dolby Atmos, dolby recommends all bed layer speakers at ear level for atmos playback. This is to better separate the sound from the height speakers and bed layer speakers. You can google "dolby atmos installation guidelines" and download a pdf describing the various speaker layouts and heights. Even if you have the side/rear speakers 1-2' above ear level, probably won't make that much of a difference.
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 4 жыл бұрын
@@strobez38 Thank you for pointing that out. I still find conflicting statements from speaker manufacturers stating to place side surrounds about 2 feet above ear level even for Dolby Atmos setups. The authority is Dolby, so even though it probably doesnt make a difference, ear level is the new "ideal" level for side surrounds in an Atmos setup.

@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 4 жыл бұрын
Dolby actually does spec this in the installation pdf at 1.25x the height of the LCR. 2' is quite high. The bed layer needs to stay as low as possible to maintain separation between it and the atmos channels. If the LCR are at 36" then the surrounds /rears can be 9" higher. Now with risers and high seat backs it's not that simple especially with rears.

The benefit to the SB4000 would be the app functionality and aesthetics, the S1512 is a pretty basic finish. Thanks for the comment and concern, but I never stated that Auro 3D heights are to be mounted at 45 degrees. I had pointed out that those height configurations were Dolby Atmos specs. I stated later in the video that Auro 3D gets only 1 ceiling channel, which is essentially placed in the middle of the ceiling, called the Voice of God. As a matter of fact I never dove too deep into Auro 3D specific placement, because I recommend an Atmos set up...cheers.

Great video. HATE the whiny synth background music. It's very distracting when trying to take in all your great advice. Despite that, a big thumbs up - Like. Thanks!

nothing was mentioned about minimum distance from closest listener for each placement?
@SpecOfTech

Everyone has a different room and must work with the space and distances they have. There are some general rules, but they are directly related to fractions of the specific room you are installing in. If you would like to know more regarding distances here is the official Dolby Atmos installation guidelines...cheers. www.dolby.com/siteassets/technologies/dolby-atmos/atmos-installation-guidelines-121318_r3.1.pdf

How do you toe in front inwall speaker ?
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 2 жыл бұрын
That would be more difficult, but ultimately you would want to mount the "crooked". You could use some wood behind them to provide the angle. Unless they provide a great center image and soundstage as is, then no need for toe in.

Spec Of Tech i sold my amp so i need new amp i ether antham or marantz i already have 7 speakers and svs 2000pro so now i have to choose a amp and the combo 2 of my speakers are bi polar or di not sure so if i go 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 i cant really use the bi polar speakers . Have you heard the difference between 5.1.2 5.1.4 7.1.2 ?
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 3 жыл бұрын
@@Samzep You can use bipolar speakers for sides and rears. They aren't the ideal thing as Dolby recommends monopoles for surrounds in Atmos, but that doesn't mean that bipoles won't work great. I have heard the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 and also 5.1/7.1 to 5.1.4//7.1.4. I will say that there was less of a benefit for me personally, going from 5.1 to 7.1 than there was going from 7.1 to 7.1.4. The height effects added more immersion to me, than adding the 7.1 rear channels. Now that can be subjective, because it depends on the movie mix as well, but I am speaking generally!

Having surround speakers above ear-level is the old method. Dolby now recommends your surround speakers at ear level coinciding with the adoption of Dolby Atmos. So if you are doing Atmos/DTSX, ear-level. If not, then put then above ear level.
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it seems I should have included that in the video! Most documents online still refer to placing them above ear level.

By the way, great video thank you. I agree with slightly higher surrounds. Surrounds at ear level are great if you’re the person in the sweet spot. If you the one either side of the sweet spot the you get higher volumes hitting you in your left or right ear when running 7.x. I guess for that reason I can see the need to set the surrounds a little higher. I ran 7.1 for a few years with Bowers in-Walls all round. My only gripe was having the surrounds too low on the wall. We are building a new place and in planning mode right now. Planning to run Klipsch in-walls/ceilings with 7.2.4 configuration with Denon AVR 4500 with 2 Velodyne 10” subs. The room is 4.8m x 3.7x with 2.4m ceilings so not the biggest room but decent rectangle. I think I’ll run the surrounds and rears at around 24” above ear level but very open to other opinions and thoughts. Thanks again for the great video. Subscribed..

What difference does it make where you place a Klipsch? It's gonna suck anywhere in the room...
