The Tesla Model 3 arrived on a red carpet when it was first introduced in 2017 and has only had its popularity challenged by the closely related Model Y. As much as it pains me to say it, 2017 was quite a few years ago and in that time we've seen very little attention paid to the Model 3...until now. The internet rumor mill was swirling and the Highland Model 3 had some hype to live up to. With minor cosmetic changes (typical of a mid cycle refresh) on the outside, a familiar but fresh new feeling on the insider, and and some quality of life improvements throughout the car the updated Model 3 may not exceed expectations but it meets them firmly where it needs to.

Putting the drive selector on the screen or, worse, on the ceiling (as the failsafe?) seems like a solution to a problem that didn't exist. But I'm sure they saved like 50 cents per car by getting rid of that stalk. 🤦‍♂️

Actually the “problem” as Tesla sees it is having to shift at all. These vehicles support an autoshift system which automatically puts the vehicle in what the car believes, based on available information, is the correct gear. As an example, when I go to leave my garage, the car automatically selects drive (I back into my garage) once I engage the seatbelt and tap the brake. (This is an opt-in feature.)

The cost cutting on these is atrocious. Elon removed parking sensors, stalks, radar etc during the pandemic(chip shortage?) and never put them back. Starts at 50K for a long range 😂. Short range Teslas are city cars in winter.

Yet the new model is 50% better car than an old one so all that you mentioned here is 100% useless and irrelevant. I just took a 2023 model Y on a roadtrip and it was an awesome experience. DIsagree on the cheap interior materials. Even Audi/BMW/Benz/Alfa/Acura/Lexus don't care to put felt lining in the storage pockets of the doors in their low end models. Companies like BMW charge you extra to get leatherette/leather on the arm rests etc. Standard they come with the squishy plastic stuff. This goes to most of the brands. Tesla has actually started putting decent materials in their cars. May not look amazing but it definitely feels more quality now. Even build quality has improved significantly.

However millions of people own and drive them. So like most things you adapt. The other extreme is Luxury brands are now offering multiple, large screens all over the dash with bright graphics that too me look like too much going on it would be harder to just focus on driving. As far as I know, the tariff is 30%. If a Chinese automaker could bring a $20k car to the US, it would be just $26k to consumers, and that would undercut the competition today. I think that Chinese companies are still uncertain if it is worth the risks to enter the US market because they are busy expanding into other more friendly markets at the moment. Most likely, they will come to the US through production in Mexico. But the Volvo EX30 could also show another way for cheaper EVs to come to the US, by being cloaked in a familiar and established brand. But it won't be the first Chinese made car sold in the US; per Googling "Just five cars sold in the U.S. are made in China: the Lincoln Nautilus, Buick Envision, Volvo S90, Polestar 1 and Polestar 2."
