Same here. Not sure why some people are complaining about it. If you drive a week without HUD, you really start to like the clear minimalistic look. I think all cars in the future will come like this. Only complain is that the stalks are missing on this one. It’s really frustrating to make sharp turns. Luckily lot of aftermarket companies are making stalks for teslas.
@Foucault2001
@Foucault2001 6 ай бұрын
A HUD would be better, not just for safety reasons, but for people who wear varifocal glasses like me, as you have to move your head more to put the screen in focus and see the speed or directions. Yes you do get used to it but if it’s a compromise for those without perfect eyesight.

As ever a meticulous review. My cousin, Tom, who is about 25 years younger than me has children of school age. He has a school run of about 50 miles one way so double that both ways. He is spending an insane amount on fuel - £500 - each week just on this. He wants this Tesla 3 simply to save on the fuel, and even at domestic charging rates - say 34p kwh - he will save a lot of money, and that is before he puts in his solar and/or wind capacity which will take the fuel bill down to zero. He also mentions the insane acceleration figures even on the basic all wheel drive. I hope his children do not lose their breakfasts on the school run….. My take is that the interior and UI/UX has now reached a level of maturity which competes, in its way, with premium brands. The underlying engineering is now as good as anything on the road. The bit I would need most adjustment to get to like would be so much on the iPad stuck in an ugly way on the middle of the dashboard. The lack of stalks with a few simple controls on the steering wheel is a huge plus in comparison to poor super premium Mercedes, for instance. I do think some sort of forward facing driver display would be an improvement, but if Tesla wants to keep the costs down, Citroen (I think) have shown the way with a small strip for driver info on top of the dashboard. Tesla really are very close to cracking a minimalist UI/UX which I think is the right way to go compared with other premium car kiddies’ space ship UIs.
@iManiac7

After a week of driving tesla I realised that I don't need/want a driver display at all, that's just a habit from the past when all cars had tiny middle screens. Middle screen in tesla is closer to steering wheel than it feels on youtube videos.

@@tomz5700 In reply to this and your next post, I think lec cars give us a chance to fill up from home with renewables with a marginal cost of zero, if you live somewhere where you can install wind or sun. We are a first generation which can fill up and power our homes without the wild swing in prices if you have to buy in your energy from an outside supplier. This has been brought home to those of us living in the UK or Europe with the big energy prices rises during 2022/3. That is the case for some kind of EV not a Tesla. The case for Tesla is that the quality has risen on a continuous basis since they came to market, and that they offer an alternative to over complicated and busy interiors which most European, especially German, manufacturers now seem to be wedded to. I grew up before anyone thought we needed an infotainment system, head up display, satnav, or any of the nonsense we now have in cars. If Tesla want to pursue a less is more strategy for car interiors, I am all for it.

I’ve had both cars and the lack of stalks you get used to pretty quick. But on the i4 it’s bothersome for passengers in the back bc BMW never removed the transmission tunnel bc they used a gas car chassis and it makes the car really cramped in the back so keep that in mind if u have kids or anyone in the back frequently plus the range for the price is not a lot.

I am not keen on the loss of the indicator stalk particularly here in the UK we have lots of twisty roads with numerous roundabouts which I suspect will be a real challenge. A remarkable car apparently just got waaaaaaaay better. We have one Tesla Model 3 already (best car we've ever owned), and a Toyota Corolla. The Corolla needs replacing - I'm going for this new Model 3, as it really does look like a very significant upgrade. Sleek new styling & aerodynamics. Beautiful interior, great seats. Excellent acceleration, speed & handling. Quiet cabin. Improved front screen. Added rear screen. Ambient lighting. Lots of space. And all for pretty much the same price. Tesla is the full package - software, handling, performance, battery management - really do love their EVs. For me, they've taken the fear out of buying an EV - and replaced it with exhilaration.

For the autopilot, 1 great way is to only use 1 hand to hold the steering wheel and relax, so that your hand is naturally forced down due to gravity. U can use 2 as well, but bias your masterhand. This way, there is a constant downforce applied on one side, and the autopilot wont trigger the warning.

One thing to consider though, if software isn't dialed in they can still tweak and improve via OTA updates. However the physical hardware of the car is pretty much set in stone when you purchase it. All in all, when there is competition there is innovation(and price cuts), so us car lovers win at the end of the day! :D

Seems like a solid upgrade over the M3P I had (2021 facelift). Comfort-wise, how does it compare to, say, a 3-series with standard suspension? I had the feeling the 3-Series (320i) was also really quite stiff, but acceptable for everyday driving. Would you say this is comparable? I'm trying to get a test drive sorted in the meantime. All reviews talk highly of the Highland.
@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 6 ай бұрын
The 3 series has a body and chassis stiffness that makes for a filtering out of bumps. I don't know about the Highlander but pretty much all of the Teslas I've been in don't have anywhere near the level of stiffness/solidity of BMW.
@SwiftHDX

@@benjaminsmith2287 I'm not questioning the stiffness of the Model 3, I'm asking about the suspension comfort.
@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 6 ай бұрын
@@SwiftHDX It adds to the suspension comfort because the chassis and body rigidity filters out some of the harshness/vibration that penetrates a less rigid body. So you have these strong cars that can deal with a stiffer suspension better. But BMW works hard at the fine tuning that even a very firm car has good compliance over. most rough surfaces.
@SwiftHDX
@SwiftHDX 6 ай бұрын
@@benjaminsmith2287 That's irrelevant to what I'm asking though. The Highland especially has been thoroughly improved in that regard, the chassis was already stiff, now the suspension has been improved in multiple ways to work better together. My question was whether the new model has bearable everyday comfort in that regard like a BMW 3 Series which is stiff but acceptable. Your theory about how BMW does this and that doesn't answer anything.
@benjaminsmith2287

@@SwiftHDX Of course then you'll have to drive it to judge. I have no idea since I've not been in a Highland but some reviewers say it is very much improved while others say it is a bit improved. I know a lot of of criticism has been made regarding the location of the speedometer, but I actually think it's more optimal than the traditional method. 1. You still have to deal with near vs far focus. HUD would eliminated this problem though 2. Compared to a traditional speedometer, looking down vs off to the side is worse. I think this has to be personally experienced. Biomechanically, human eyes are faster at side to side vision, vs up and down (try it for yourself!). Viewing the speedometer off to the side (as in a Tesla Model 3/Y) is easier and allows you to refocus on the road more quickly than a traditional speedometer. HUD would still be better though, however I suspect Tesla prefers to avoid this due to the additional cost.

We could re-try it with that doors open and seat belt thing, not sure if that would change anything. My guess is also that it depended on the wrong estimation of the distance to the wall.
