2024 Toyota Land Cruiser // How is it different than Lexus GX?

This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser body-on-frame SUV. There is just one powertrain option for the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, the i-Force Max Hybrid, a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 48 horsepower electric motor. It has an 8-speed automatic transmission and a combined 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. It can tow 6,000 pounds.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is smaller compared to the previous model, its 4.4” narrower and 1.2” shorter Toyota says, this will make this new model nimbler on the trails.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is 193.7” long, its wheelbase 112.2” and its width with the mirrors is 84.2”, it offers a ground clearance of 8.7”. The 2024 GX is over 3” longer, but they have the same wheelbase.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser has a newly developed double wish-bone front suspension with tune-tubed shocks paired with a multi-link rear suspension with coil springs. It features electric power steering and 17” disc brakes front and rear. All Land Cruisers are equipped with multi-terrain select, downhill assist control, front tow/recovery hooks, a full-time four wheel drive system with centre locking differential and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range. The system also features vehicle stability control and an automatic limited slip differential.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser has an approach angle up to 31 degrees and max departure to 22 degrees while breakover angle reaches 25 degrees.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser will be offered in three trims, Land Cruiser 1958, Land Cruiser and First Edition. It will have 7 exterior colour choices and the First Edition model will have two new two-tone options, Trail Dust and Heritage Blue featuring a gray roof. 18” - 20” wheels are available.
Customize the Land Cruiser with over 100 accessories, more will come.
For the signature Land Cruiser look, the 1958 model will feature the iconic round LED headlights, LED fog lights and Toyota Heritage Grille. The Land Cruiser middle trim has slim rectangular headlights and a front stabilizer bar disconnect. The First Edition model adds a roof rack, rock rails, round LED headlamps, tailgate light, a back door guard and mud flaps.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser seats up to 5-passengers and features standard black cloth seats, available Softex and Leather. It has Toyota’s updated infotainment system which includes, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. It comes standard with an 8” touchscreen, available 12.3” touchscreen. The base 1958 model comes with a wireless charger, manual cloth heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 6-speaker sound system, push button start and a 2400 Watt AC inverter. The middle Land Cruiser trim adds Softex upholstery, power front seats which are heated and ventilated, the multi-terrain monitor, a 12.3” touchscreen and a 10-speaker sound system. A premium package can be added to the middle trim to get heated and ventilated leather trimmed seats in black or Java, a 14-speaker JBL sound system, a head-up display, digital rearview mirror and a moonroof. The top trim adds heated and ventilated leather trimmed seats and a First Edition logo on the door panels. Over the air software updates are available.
The Land Cruiser comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 and will be limited to 5,000 units in the first two months of production, it will be built in Japan.
Pricing and fuel economy will be announced closer to the on-sale date spring of 2024.

It is important to note that this is the Land Cruiser Prado J250, not the replacement to the Land Cruiser J200. The Land Cruiser J300 is not sold in North America, and neither did the Land Cruiser Prado J150 make it to North America.

The round headlights are only available on the 1958 model and this First Edition but the problem is there won't be many First Edition models made, they will be difficult to get. I wish Toyota offered a package for the extra features for the 1958 and the Land Cruiser middle trim with the slim rectangular lights so you can choose between both.

I live in Toronto and was considering going to the Auto Show as I'm intending to buy a new vehicle sometime in the next few months or so. Is it worthwhile for me, as a potential car buyer, to go? Would I be allowed to sit in vehicles to get a feel for them? Are there dealer reps there to ask questions? There's lots of inventory on the floor especially Toyota, Lexus, Chevrolet, Ford and Lincoln. You can sit in some vehicles, but others you are not allowed to if they are on a platform.

I like the more boxy, upright design.. Looks like Toyota/Lexus finally made a vehicle that has good outward visibility... Repeat .. Good outward visibility.. Most Toyotas and Lexus have pretty poor outward visibility. Good visibility is super important for safe driving. Also would be nice if the new Land cruisers and GX's would be comfortable, smooth and quiet to drive on the road. The past Land Cruisers and GX's were too noisy and harsh riding on the roads. Maybe they should make two versions - one version for that is smooth, comfy and quiet for the road, and the other more geared for off-road driving.

I'm surprised they are only offering 2 rows of seats. Maybe a way to force larger families to step up to the GX and/or not encroach on the Grand Highlander. But...Lexus is offering the TX and GX with 3rd rows so not really sure the strategy for Toyota especially if there is supposedly a smaller LC coming, as well as the replacement for the 4Runner.

I’m very impressed with the new Lexus GX. Very impressed. But oddly, this new Toyota ‘Land Cruiser’ does absolutely nothing for me. Literally, the only thing I think looks new and ‘cool’ are it’s round headlights (hate the others). I’m confused on how (basically) the same vehicle leaves me with such different impressions. So the gx550 starts at about $86k Canadian. The current year 4 runner starts at about $56k Canadian. If we finally get the new 4Runner next year I would assume it is going to go up 4-8k at least to start. Where do you think the 1958 edition is going to start?

You didn't note that the leftover height in the trunk is 4 inches more than the GX. Battery storage takes up a lot of room. The height to put items in the trunk is 4" greater, which, for me, is a deal breaker. Too bad they didn't put the battery somewhere else else.

I dont like the line on the rear, makes me think it has a tailgate teasing me they could have added one easily, would have worked as a work bench or a camping table, 300 series doesnt have a tailgat like the 200... 250 shoukd have added it. Its asking for one with that line on the hatch!! Hopefully that 4runner has a tailgate like the 2nd gen and 1st gen 4R

We currently have a 2017 Lexus GX and are very mvch looking forward to the Land Cruiser release, it is the top vehicle on our list to buy IF the L/100km is significantly more reasonable than our GX. The new engine GX does not have great m p g. Having a hybrid engine in the Land Cruiser may make better fuel economy possible.

The GX looks bigger just by looking at the videos. But it's only 3 inches longer than the Land Cruiser and have the same wheelbase. Where is the extra 3 inches? For only 3 inches longer, one should not be able to tell the difference just by watching the videos. But from the videos, one can definitely tell that the GX is bigger/longer.

I just went to the show. Ok what a sad state the show was in. No Honda, Acura, BMW, Audi, VW, Mercedes, Mazda.... Land Cruiser, GX 550, EV9 and Fisker looked good though. Toyota Crown Signia was very nice as well. No EX30, No Polestar 4. Come on guys!!! Standing by for the ridiculous Land Cruiser price.
