Totally agree with your assessment about the differences in design philosophy between VW/Audi vs the Koreans. Kia/Hyundai remind me of fast fashion - changing things up at every turn to maintain interest whereas VW/Audi produce the more timeless, classic designs. Pros and cons to both approaches.
@Brian-jv8iy
@Brian-jv8iy 2 ай бұрын
Koreans did that until around 2012, and because of that, they could not keep sales outside Korea. They do it outside of neccesity, whereas fast ffashion, is about changing non stop, not to keep interest of the buyer, but because buyers expect it. Korean cars might sometime look nice or somehwat acceptable quality, but underneath it's the same as they were in the 90s, cheap everything, outdated, same with hyundai-genesis

I leased a 2024 VW Taos in Nov ‘23. After taking this vehicle on a 4000km road trip to the US, I was VERY disappointed with the Taos. The seats were way too firm, the transmission was extremely jerky and I really missed the automatic tailgate. So, after six months, I just upgraded to the 2024 VW Tiguan Highline R-Line. What a pleasant change from the Taos. Reminds me of my 2016 Passat. Very comfortable, well equipped and extremely spacious. Love the Tiguan..!

I wish I could say the same thing, I have a 2024 Tiguan Highline R line top trim, I loved it at first but as of now after 6-7 months of ownership there’s so many things that I don’t like about it and I don’t think I hate it yet, but I 200% regret getting rid of my 2017 accord V6 for this

Same, but my Taos only lasted a month lol. The overall driving experience just sucked. Night and Day with the Tiguan, much more satisfying and comfortable. I'm not sure it's something I'll keep long term but it'll be great for the next 3-4 years and all the extra running around I have to do for my kid.

Sounds like you bought the AWD Taos with the dual clutch transmission. It’s made to feel like a manual transmission so is jerky by design.

Andrea, I must say that you have come a long way since your first appearance on the Motormouth channel. I believe the episode dropped on April 13th, 2016 and Zach brought (The Boss) to give her impression of the 2016 Range Rover Sport. You've since developed the poise and presence of Diane Sawyer in her prime! As for you Zach, I'm impressed with how you leveraged the Motormouth character(annoying car salesman)that you created over 20 years ago and turned it into the best automotive KZbin channel. Good for you both!

We have had four Tiguans over the years. A ‘16 (front wheel drive six speed), ‘18 New style, ‘23 Comfortline R, and my old ‘14 Comfortline, oh and all are AWD. We love them. Very comfortable, really good mileage, literally no issues with our new ones re 18 and 23. Done some big trips and 25,000 kms in the 23 already. A proper transmission is awesome. We drive the Rogue and a few others and really, it was an easy decision! Just my opinion but also the best looking SUV in this segment by far! I would like proper pipes out the back as commented on here. The infotainment is very good in the Comfortline and I hope the dash does not go the root of the GTI re stuck on the dash! Comfortline is absolutely the way to go! BTW, also very good in snow!

Leased a 2012 GTI DSG. Car shuts off on its own while driving, happened twice on the highway. Brought it back to dealership for warranty and they claimed it was fuel pump issue. Had them replace/repair it three times but issue wouldn’t go away. Returned the lease early and stayed away from VW ever since.

I've owned 50 vehicles, lots of German cars, BMWs, Porsches, Mercedes and one Audi, but never a VW. The reliability always worried me. I'd love to try a new Golf R but they ruined it by removing all the buttons, knobs and switches and putting in idiotic touch screen surfaces for all the important stuff. Not interested in that.

I had a 2015 Tiguan SEL (the original smaller one) that I loved until it had a major powertrain failure at 7 years and 57,000 miles. All maintenance done by VW dealer and was garaged the entire time. It was out of warranty but we got VW Corporate to pay half of the $5,300 repair bill. I miss the dimensions and height of that VW. The Tiguan now is too big for me living in a large city. Now in a Mazda CX-30 turbo which is great to drive and the right size but lower in height and hard to see out of. That was my second VW that had major problems so I didn’t want to risk the Taos being unreliable as well. Love the show. I watch every episode.

My Wife replaced her Dodge Magnum with a 2012 VW Jetta Highline with every option (sat/nag), including that Fender sound system. I think or not have purchased that car without that sound system. We both love it. It makes a world of difference, when compared to both base (4 speakers) and regular Highline (6 speakers). It brought the speaker count up to Nine, including an amazing subwoofer (although it takes away some boot space). This car has NOT been problem free, especially when compared to Toyota Honda… and we certainly didn’t expect to have it for years… BUT, we absolutely love it. Its now around 250,000kms and I’ve yet to come across something worth replacing it with. The seats take every sort of beating (kids/dogs/yard sale deals), it has had super heavy loads on it’s roof (bar type cargo carrier), it has been great with light trailering and… it is just nice to drive. German motorcars (I have/have had others) are just… different, in a good way. Reliability… not so much. But they are definitely more engaging to drive. Personally I love them. Though for friends and Family… get a Toyota (or a Honda). Thanks for the video.

I had a 2012 VW CC back when it was new, in the Middle East. Was an absolute looker of a car, but just horrendous reliability. Regular dealer visits, and even let us stranded in the middle of the road once - in 46 degree (Celsius) summer heat! Had all maintenance done per the book, but all the issues were despite that. Switched to a Lexus after and haven't gone back. The peace of owning a reliable car CANNOT be beat. Thanks for the honest and detailed reviews! Love your show!! Esp. the coffee and cars segments!

It's just a Passat B6, most have over a million km now without any repairs. Either your market known for mass selling of cheapend out models already did it back then, or you did not change oil properly. Lexuses are less reliable, outdated to 80s-90s they're toyotas, unless you get a naturally aspirated but that is for different expectations
@hs1296
@hs1296 2 ай бұрын
@@Brian-jv8iy I was in the Middle East...nothing cheap going on over there. All maintenance was done at the dealership with VW certified mechs. So really they had no excuse. Anyways it's not just me, most folks I know from back there (and where I am at now too) feel the same. But hey...it's just an opinion. You are welcome to hold yours. I don't think the Lexus was anything like a Toyota. And I do not mind a bit of outdated tech if the car starts everyday (not agreeing it was outdated though).

Looks like a decent offering in the segment. I guess my only gripe (and it's not exclusive to VW) is having the same engine in various models, de-tuned for lower priced trims/models. If you are using the 2.0T engine, it's likely easy to get 230 HP out of it, just use that same engine in all of them. Don't de-tuned it to 180 HP in lower trims/models. Also, an interesting note about the transmission. The 8 speed ZF unit used here is exclusive to North America. Other markets get a 7 speed DSG. The 8 speed ZF unit has a decent track record (it's used in TONS of different vehicles) and may be the reason we get it here (the comments about previous complaints on prior versions).

The seals were replaced in January 2024, and now they're looking to replace the head gaskets. It's a lease and dump for me. Maintenance is expensive, and the track records are not there. I see that nothing has really changed between 2022 and 2024 in the top trim. Fuel consumption could be better.

I agree about the engine, for the R-Line it should have more power to match the sporty exterior. I have a 2023 Highline R-Line and just wish it had the GTI engine in it. Maybe one day it will, or we may even get the full fat Tiguan R like our European cousins 🙃

I have a 2023 Tiguan Highline R-Line (it is a bit of a mouthful), and have had no issues with it whatsoever. I'm also a fan of the integrated screen in the dash, and a fan of the sound system. One thing I would love to see with the R-Line variant would be extra power to match the sporty exterior - maybe drop the GTI engine in it with perhaps a slightly different set up. I know this is wishful thinking as it would likely draw sales away from the GTI, and I know you can get engine ECU re-mapping but I just want more power from the offset. I wish we could get the full fat Tiguan R like our European cousins - maybe VW Canada/North America will one day be brave enough to try it? As much as I love the Tiguan, when the time comes to change, I've decided that I NEED the GTI experience, regardless of the sub-standard sound system and the stand up screen on the dash 😉

Bought a 2024 R Line SEL in the US. No back seat controls (vents only), Digital Cockpit Pro 10.25” digital instrument display (only the 8" digital is available on all other trims here). I believe you said you get a 12.25" Digital Cockpit Pro? Is that correct? Kinda cheaped out a bit in the US but still happy with the purchase so far.

I agree with Andrea here, give me my real exhaust tips and integrated screen, and give me back my fog lights while at it. As far as VW's reliability is concerned, it's been hit-and-miss for the longest time.

so true about VWs. it's hit or miss. So far I had 2 VWs in 22 years. first - 2002 VW Jetta was really bad: burning oil, all kind of electrical problems, disintegrating central armrest, falling down front door windows (recall). I traded it after 10 years and got 2012 VW Passat 3.6L. So far I had only 1 serious issue with AC vent motor, that died (replaced). Other than expensive maintenance its being an amazing car. I'm still driving it today. Also absolutely love Fender stereo system. I guess, the second time is the charm.

Agreed with your VW comment... Had a 2012 GTI on 4 yr lease and it started to act weird in the last 3 months. Then got a 2016 on another 4 yrs lease and it has been trouble free so I ended by buying it off.

A lady ran a red light and totaled my Q3 2021.😢😢😢😢😢 What in the world can I look at? That’s similar to a Q3 ??? Whatever I buy, it’s gonna have the infotainment system built in the dash and similar specs of a Q3✅✅✅✅✅ Just contemplating buying something a little different this time ⁉️

Love my US 2023 SEL and design, big fan of Fender Audio System just amazing sound and base, highway driving got 33/34 mile/gal, drove fast, used premium gas 92 octane result better experience and smoother driving dynamic for turbocharged engine, engine may last longer or less problematic in the long run on 92 Octane gas, luck so far my picked Tiguan SEL not a lemon where other may luck out got a lemon or minor problematic… this is an issue with all manufacturers where X units produced a certain percentage units will have issue so crossed finger hope picked the zero defective unit. Have been a Honda & Acura for decades but surprisingly happy with Tiguan. I like high torque engine car but Tiguan SEL just so fun to drive and still experience the joy on each drive for almost a year now, very weird… in a good way. Not a fan of Tiguan 2025 design looks like a vehicle for old people… 2023/2024 design and refined just right, absolutely gorgeous and fashionable… European flare So much more can be said pro/con but recommended test drive and see Tiguan SEL in person… Yes get the SEL!!! There is car for everyone but not everyone will pick a Tiguan but maybe a Tiguan SEL 😁 cheers Pro tip, negotiated 10 years manufacturing bumper-to-bumper with no deductible for less

I generally like VW's timeless, clean designs, though some of them have gotten a bit ugly lately. Not a fan of the current Jetta, for example. Those fae exhaust tips are embarrassingly tacky. This Tiguan is my favorite design in this CUV size segment otherwise. It's handsome. However, I hear way too many horror stories about VW reliability. There's always someone who chimes in to say "Mine's been reliable." Count your blessings, sir/madam. Too many VWs are not reliable.

I've test-drived the new model (2025) that is already on sale here in Greece and although it looks much fresher and modern and has a much more evolved infotainment system, it lacks the perceived quality of the older model. Very plasticky and the seats are not very good.

2014 Mk7 Golf w/ 45K Kms and no major issues so far. The auto-up/down window switches keep breaking though. A few hundred bucks to fix at my local shop so it's not the end of the world, but very annoying. Shop says the part is just flimsy plastic so it'll probably keep breaking. I absolutely love this car otherwise. I wonder if the next Q3 will be based on the new Euro Tiguan. That might be my pick for my next car.

I had a Tiguan loaner car while my AWD Taos was in for service. My impressions. It's big. Its heavy and a bit clumsy. The rear suspension seems to hop a bit over bumps in a way my Taos does not. The Taos is light on its feet. It's engine makes less noise while accelerating. The Tiguan does have a better tune transmission though. I used to own a 2019 Mazda CX5. It also drove better than the Tiguan. But the Tiguan has lots of room and lots of cargo room. But it drives big, heavy and a bit clumsy. I'm a bit biased as my second car is a 2022 Subaru BRZ Limited.

My ID.4 is an electrified Tiguan, and the styling of the new Tiguan is no surprise to me. Looks very similar to its sister car in my driveway, just more "stately" (boxier). The wrap around headlights/tailights and VW logo light of the ID.4 will probably be in the next Tiguan. Sorry to say if the screen in the ID.4 is an indicator, the Tiguan will have the screen they don't like. It's the same screen as the Golf GTI 😅

The steering becomes a little tighter as well. Not as much as when I put my GLI in sport mode but it helps a bit. Now you will use more fuel but you can't have it both ways unless you're driving a hybrid. VW can solve all of this by just tuning the engine to be like the GTI or GLI. If I keep mine after the lease is up in August 2025 I will get an APR tune.

Agree! VW has wastegate linkage seizing problems on their turbos. Their only fix is to replace the turbo. Their only preventive maintenance for this is to floor it to "exersize the full range of the turbo / linkage & wastegate.

So my 2012 Tiguan just got a broken Timing chain after I put $3500 into and bought tabs, sigh...The mechanic at my local dealer said that there are Oil leak issues in the 2024 and it sounds like they are not sure why. So sadly, I'm not going to get another one. I did drive a loaner and I loved the seats as usual and the visibility . My VW tech bought my 2012 from me and is fixing it up for his wife. It would have cost me $5000 to have the jumping timing chain fixed. There were lots of issues with it and the turbo just like my 2003 Jetta that was so comfortable and fun to drive too. I live in Seattle. Sadly bye bye VW.
