PREACH!! Mazda has had the same portfolio and self positioning for going on twenty years now! People assume too much of the brand because of its hardships with Ford, but that doesn’t define the entire company or its heritage. Mazda does its own thing obviously and isn’t interested in being anything “esque.” Mazda is just Mazda

Agreed. I first noticed Mazda when I bought a 2016 CX-9 Signature. Deciding it was time to treat myself to a luxury car, I was test-driving new Audi Q5's and Q7's, when a pal in my vintage car club was raving about the new CX-9. I'd never paid the slightest bit of attention to Mazda but, almost for a lark, I thought I'd test drive one. The CX-9's were certainly attractive, but nothing prepared me for that test drive: solid build quality; planted, composed handling; 'punchy'...such a nicely appointed interior. I couldn't believe it. I went back two more times to the respective Audi and Mazda dealers thinking I must be mistaken. Sure, when you reach 70-80 mph, the Audi keeps on going. But... There's no Autobahn here. Everything that an SUV is supposed to do on U.S. roads the CX-9 did as well as the Audi - for many thousands of dollars less. ...and all of that low-end torque! So, instead of an Audi, I bought a CX-9 ...and with the savings, I acquired a second vintage car! I've been a fan ever since. Just picked up my 4th Mazda at the end of April - a 2024 CX-90 PHEV Premium + , and couldn't be happier. It's a worthy successor to the CX-9!

After being let down by two Genesis GV70 in 14 months (both total disasters), I'm looking forward to Mazda reliability!

Congrats on your selection. I agree with it. Premium Plus with a Turbo S . Color selections are subjective of course. I have a 22 MDX Advance lease coming due in 2 months (8/24) with an option to buy it at $38,500 - with only 21K miles on it, so that's very tempting. But this Mazda is on my short list for other considerations. The CX -70 has far more HP /Torque numbers with better MPGs than my Non Type S MDX. And even though the new 25 MDX has finally went to a TouchScreen vs their Touich Pad, it's about $5 K more in price. I'll test drive one before making my decision, however, the buyout does make sense. Then I will own it and can do something in the near future. From what I can determine, my MDX with low mileage, should command about $45 -$48 K on a dealer's Used Car Lot.

Great review! I took delivery of my CX-90 PHEV Premium+ just over a month ago and concur with your assessment. The incentives on the PHEV (which as-of January 2024 are given as a discount on the front-end, instead of waiting for a tax refund) are fantastic. I'm able to do my 12-mile round-trip commute to work on all electric, plus stop at the grocery en route home. Thus, six weeks-in, I've barely used a tank and a half of gas. Mind you, that includes lots of idling and mode-searching as I explore the various features, as well as a 100-mile DC-Baltimore round-trip. Even considering the above, this large vehicle is averaging 43 mpg(!). As a 'DINK' couple that doesn't regularly 'need' a three-row, I waited to trade-in my '22 CX-5 Turbo Sg until the CX-70 was announced. But when I saw that it was essentially a CX-90 with blackout 'Sport' trim, I decided to go with the 90. I personally prefer the chrome, and we'll keep the 3rd row folded till family comes to visit. Furthermore, only the CX-90 has the 'Artisan Red' hue that literally has had passersby walking backwards and doing double takes. With white Napa leather, pano roof, digital gages, etc, it's got everything I was hoping for since awaiting the 'refresh' of my 2016 CX-9 Sg, the vehicle that first made me fall in love with Mazda. Well done.

@@jstrig I'm not concerned about the color at all. I have friends who own this color and none of them have had any issues. Besides, I'm OCD and once a week, I use NexGen Ceramic Detail Spray on my cars, which puts a very durable coat of protection on the paint. If people don't take care of the paint on a car, any car can have paint issues, tbh.

Thank you for a review of this car that wasn’t full of passive aggressive references to the CX-90. I could tell from your facial expressions that you were genuinely enjoying driving that car. I’ve only driven Mazdas for the past almost decade and honestly, when I drive other vehicles I find them boring and often unpleasant when compared to my Mazdas. I love that Mazda is making luxury more affordable. I honestly feel like the CX-70 and 90 are the cars to beat in this segment. I realize the Telluride usually gets all the accolades because of its value proposition, but it’s not as pleasant to drive and doesn’t have that luxury vibe that the Mazdas have.

ITS A Mazda that has consistently put forward the notion that this car is indeed a drivers car, with the overall reliability of a vehicle in mind. Don’t get me wrong, those German/Japanese upscale products are beautiful vehicles, but buying this CX7O gives you more bang for your buck. Plus, the design team at Mazda (maybe out of California?) hit it out of the park! That Red interior is luxury with a sporty feel to it. Thanks again for this great, unbiased all-around vehicle. I was and still am among the crop that felt let down on this thing. It's not as practical and sporty as hoped but it works for some people. I guess the lack of real differentiation to call it another model feels a bit disrespectful to their consumers. It's probably better for business and marketing but it lacks creativity and innovation. It is a big hauler and requires larger spaces to maneuver. Its a nice rig by itself and if it was released first or alongside the cx-90, probably no big deal to most but when you have a need to upsize your cx-5 but don't want a borderline full size car and want the new engine, there's just no option there at the moment. Hope the cx-5 hybrid gets a little roomier

I just went in the showroom 2 days ago only to leave frustrated because the styling of the CX 70 hits all the marks but doesn't fulfill the seat requirements. I would instead call a middle-class man's BMW X5. Your average poor man cannot afford a new $60,000 SUV, whereas a middle-class person is likelier to get a new $60,000 SUV. In the case of the average poor man, their BMW X5 is either a 15-year-old BMW X5 or any 10-year-old mid-size SUV with 200,000 miles on the odometer. A person driving a new CX-70 would not consider themselves a poor man if they had the credit and cash to afford a $60,000 SUV. However, with today's high cost of living, few people are willing to spend $60,000 of their hard-earned money on an SUV. I think the CX-70 is the sweet spot in this segment and worth every penny with its affordable lease and maintenance cost.

Base AWD X5 also starts at $68k. Add the “options” that should be standard on a vehicle like that and you reach into the mid 70’s. You should get more performance with that. Everyone keeps comparing the two because car reviewers feel the need to always have this vs mentality when what they really should be saying is you get a better interior with just as many features in a nice package for much less money than an X5. Mazda is going after Lexus, Infinity, and Acura….they just happen to be offering an interior that is as nice or nicer than the Germans. They should have done more for the sportiness of this model but for what it is Mazda has done a pretty good job. They did a good enough job that I have been cross shopping it with an MDX, Q5 sportback, and Atlas cross sport. Not sure if I will settle on it but they are in contention.
