One thing to note about Mufasa is that despite the fact that it is objectively an animated movie, Disney did not submit the 2019 Lion King because even though it qualified for Best Animated Feature (I mean, Wall-E, Lego Movie, and most certainly Marcel the Shell had more live action in them), Disney claimed The Lion King was live-action (the Globes nomination happened because the HFPA took the matter into their own hands to nominate it). The same fate I feel is very likely to happen with Mufasa. It IS an animated movie, but Disney will pretend it isn't.

@@bradyarguin they added this rule after Avatar came out that Motion Capture movies are disqualified from being submited for animated feature, mainly so a movie like Avatar way of water couldn’t compete as it would have qualified otherwise. Why it’s kind of petty though as it was also added when there was this sort of resentment for motion capture in the industry( i mean their is a massive diss at the end credits of Ratatouille) this why TInTin wasn’t nominated. witch too me I’ve always felt that motion capture is the cgi equivalent of rotoscoping. What is and isn’t animation is tricky debate( I mean one could argue the works or Stan brakgidge is animation ) that I believe animation scholars can’t an agree on.

And The Adventures of Tintin actually WAS eligible to be nominated for the Oscar, but the Oscars just didn't nominate it.

So a bit of context for Pedro Paramo. The book is pretty much in the canon of Spanish literature, it's the kind of book teens have to read for school. It is very famously confusing and weird but it is classic. So it may have more pull to get Mexico's submission than you think.

Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.

Finally, redemption and justice for animated feature) so happy) thanks JnC, i still love you guys) Inside out2 is barbie of this year's animation, they will feel that it got the box office blissful glow and that's its award, so likely just a nom there for pixar Also u may be right about transformers 1, but i wouldn't dismiss lord of rings right away so quickly, as it is still a part of IP that was hugely successful at the oscars back in the day. and then secondly its hand drawn animation which is usually recognized by the academy and to add to the conversation, cartoon saloon, red turtle as well as some other indie darlings in traditional animation got in the lineup in the past, so i just dont think they will have 2 stop motion projects but no hand drawn animation

You don’t need a US release the previous year to get nominated in Best Animated Feature, it just has to meet eligibility rules and be submitted for consideration. Regardless Mary and Max got a theatrical run in LA and it WAS submitted for Best Animated Feature, but it wasn’t nominated, which is just absurd.

Best Animated Film, the next 4 films i believe is almost get that Oscar Nomination: - Flow - Inside Out 2 - Memoir of a Snail - The Wild Robot Flow & Memoir of a Snail are the 2 underdog/independent/international films the Oscars usually nominated Inside Out 2 is the “Popular” film, because became the higgest grossing animated film, until now (2024), & is Disney, Oscars loves Disney and only they made an aceptable film, get a gifted nomination, in this case IO2 is a fantstic film The Wild Robot is the acclaim film non Disney of the other big animated studio, in this case Dreamworks The 5 & final nomination starts beetwen next films, but some depends of the critic’s recepction, in order: 5. The animated category is one that I'm always excited for. I had the exact same thoughts- that it's between Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot. I haven't seen Inside Out 2 yet (but will soon), and i love The Wild Robot trailer- the animation looks stunning, plus, the all star cast. Both movies have great messages for kids, like accepting yourself while embracing growing up and learning how to adapt to your environment, make friends, etc.

The animated category now seems kinda this: the category was been under pixar/disney hegemony since finding nemo with some times when were successful rebels ( rango,spiderman etc) but few years Guillermo del toro came and started the animation revolution after controversy one year before. It continued with boy and the heron but seems kinda that pixarnatist inside out 2 could restore the pixar/disney hegemony until a weak year or a stronger film happened

All We Imagine as Light might very well be submitted by India. The director is an avid critic of Modi but he returned to his 3rd term with a completely fractured mandate and is clearly on his way out. His control over institutions is weakened so I don't think the jury would be pressurized to not submit it anymore. He even congratulated Payak Kapadia on twitter.

The oscars are biased at nominating animated films at best picture and give win at sequels, of anything i could maybe a boy in the heron/ spiderman split this year if wild robot or flow or wallace and gromit deliver
