Fun fact- since 2000, the only movies nominated for costume design to not be a period, sci-fi, or a fantasy film are 102 Dalmatians, the devil wears Prada, and la la land. That’s it. And the only films nominated for production design to not be those 3 genres are the father, parasite and la la land

The Giedi Prime scene shot in infrared alone gives Dune the repeat in cinematography, imo. The duel and the sandworm scene gets it editing. I think Wicked would get in for production, but I'd keep Dune at the top due to the elaborate and entirely original costumes. For makeup, I'm holding out for Nosferatu.

My two cents on some of the cases for Visual Effects: * How in the world is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes not number 2 lol? It actually did do a lot of new things with VFX, like for example, water simulations. The river simulations in the river scene ALONE took up 1.2 PETABYTES of storage! That's 1,200 terabytes! It may look on the surface that it's not bringing anything new to the table, but it really is in ways you may not realize. Hell, it MIGHT even win the top prize at VES over Dune Part Two. And Cole's right, there are almost entire SCENES in Kingdom that are fully CGI to an extent that it blew my mind. In the other apes films, mainly Dawn and War, had overcast lighting over the characters and environments, whereas here, a lot of it is in broad daylight, which is trickier to do. * Mufasa, I think should be worried about its visual effects prospects. Yes, the general audience might like the emotive faces better, but this is the vfx branch voting. They will snub popular picks like Everything Everywhere, Scott Pilgrim, and Oppenheimer all the time in favor of more impressive achievements. The first Lion King won 3 awards at VES because while everyone else complained about the fact that everything looked too real, it was very apparent that the sentiment was not shared by the VFX community. Even the environments and virtual camera movements in Mufasa make it look more like Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole than a photoreal achievement. * Also, I will concede on Furiosa. I complained about the VFX when the trailers came out, but honestly they're better than I thought. It's moreso the scenarios are more over-the-top than in the first film, but the effects themselves are very strong. I don't think this being a bomb will hurt it, though. The Creator flopped, and it still got two nominations. The fact that this is a sequel to a Best Picture nominee, and let's face it, the craft categories might have fewer Best Picture nominees than in most years, it will at least get eyes on it, it won't just disappear. * And finally, I wouldn't completely rule out Deadpool & Wolverine. Especially in the 10, like it will at bare minimum make the shortlist. Even years where a Marvel movie didn't get nominated like 2011 and 2015, they most assuredly got into the shortlist. It does have this lady named Cassandra Nova who sticks her fingers in people's heads in a weird way that's impressive.

I know this is about crafts but one small thing about actress. There’s no way Gaga is going supporting. In the same way Gladstone and Williams and Brian Cox held strong and wanted to go lead for their projects despite their candidacy in supporting and likelihood of winning, Gaga will be the same. She’ll want to go lead, so there shouldn’t be much hesitation on that front imo.

Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.

The reason that Deadpool and Wolverine should be considered more in VFX is the multiverse BS. most of the time it doesn’t look all that great, but that didn’t stop them from nominating No Way Home. It’s got the Doctor Strange portals, there are some insane landscapes, there’s a big CGI monster. Most of it doesn’t look great, but idk if they care. It looks a little better than No Way Home, and that got in over a Matrix movie. Plus it might get SAG stunts, and there’s a decent correlation there sometimes

There's one really excellent effect in Deadpool vs. Wolverine that also became kinda trendy on social media, where the villain uses her powers to sorta stick her fingers in people's faces, but it also looks kinda intentionally pulpy so I don't know if that alone is enough to give it a fighting chance in Visual Effects despite being a truly standout effect.

Only one image released, all the buzz is coming from the novel not the film, it has a supporting actress contender which is expected to be showered with acclaim. We are basing the first reactions off out of thin air because anyone can go on Letterboxd and write a false review, as we speak. The festival directors opinion also don't count for much. They want the film to be a success, of course they do, they want to sell tickets. If it is such a grand cinematography contender they could have at least made an effort to release a better image, just like how the Queer team did! I don't know, it sounds a bit wobbly to me.
