I just wanted to say that your videos have saved me from the tacticool, 900 lbs gear bags that some tend to push on beginner preppers, survivalist and homesteaders. I have been very slowly amassing long term use items, and ran into a problem of choosing a dedicated firearm for my bag. At first I was thinking "Well I might need something with round count in case I run into people!" But now that I am finally 21 I am thinking a good durable semi automatic will do the job 99.9% of the time, so what i was left with was that I wanted something simple, versatile, lighter weight than most. first it was a pump 12, then it was a 3030, so on and so forth. Then I remembered about a break action, simple versatile, can be broken down. automatically I wanted it to be 12 gauge, then like it was destined I ran into this video about adapters, and LONG STORY short I feel I have the perfect setup for my needs. sorry for the long post, thanks again :-)

Thanks for reviewing this fantastic adapter, Dave. That really adds a lot of versatility to one of your most important tools. I love the idea of having a few adapters for multiple calibers and only needing one firearm. I agree that my first choice would be 22 LR, and then the 410/45 Colt.

Thanks so much for this, Dave! I'm gonna order a 410 and 20 gauge extender for my single shot 12 gauge now, just to give it a bit more versatility; and I'm pretty sure that the accuracy won't deplete that much if we're talking about strictly shotgun rounds. Thanks again for the tip!

@robcas631 I thought it was 12GA, my bad. Either way depending on what model of frame the weapon is, you can send the receiver of an H&R 1871 back to the company and get another barrel of your choice thought there "Barrel Accessory Program"

22lr dont have to be struck on the rim. i have an interchangable New England Firearms .410 & 22lr and the firing pin strikes dead center. I tried some 22 shells that where thought to be duds (already fired by a rimfire) and they fired perfect. In my opinion 22lr should be centerfire. Great Video!

Dave, Since I already own and shoot a carbine and a reproduction peacemaker in .45 Colt, it was a no-brainer to order a pathfinder 12gauge to .45 Colt insert for old reliable.

@Rivieratime or you could simply buy a Rossi Matched Pair .22LR/20 gauge for $150 or less. I think $150 is common man pricing and that's brand new. the 20 gauge is a good shell for hunting everything a 12 gauge can, you just need to get a little closer and that should be no problem. a 20 gauge slug will take anything up to moose(I've done it with ease) and the shotshells will perform similarly to a 12 gauge.

Additionally a small piece of char cloth held near the gap between the cylinder and the barrel or even replacing the bullet can be used to start a fire when the gun is fired.

You know what I think would be fun? A subcaliber suppressed .22 insert for a 12 guage. Basically a suppressor that fits in the barrel directly attached to a .22 sub-caliber insert, off set so that the firing pin hits the rim. Basically make your breachloading 12 guage a single shot suppressed rifle.

Hey Dave, I have a similar contraption that I bought a few months ago for my H&R Topper. Mine was a different manufacturer, and was aluminum. I would like to get this one, but you do not state whether or not the one in your video is rifled. Another company that makes some with different barrel lengths is MC ACE. I have talked to these folks and theirs are rifled, and made from barrel blanks. The 10" one that they offer is about $100 and will store in the hollow of the buttstock.

I bought a NIB 12ga NEF "Survivor" a few years back. The only reason I bought it was that it had been on the shotgun wall of my favorite gun shop for more than a year. It just looked lonely and for $115 I figured I couldn't go very wrong. I wanted to send it to NEF for a rifle barrel but they won't convert the shotgun frame to rifle. I've been enjoying this series and I will be ordering a couple of caliber adapters for it.I had no idea they made such a thing. Thanks for the info.

ever consider a Rossi matched pair .22LR/20 gauge? two barrels and two cartridge choices. you're not carrying another gun, just another barrel. this set goes for around $125-$150 new and 20 gauge is reloadable like any other shotshell like you showed earlier in the series. you can even get 20 gauge brass shells for extended life. I personally like the Rossi for it's easier disassembly since all it takes is to unscrew the front sling loop screw and just take apart. opinions?

A few videos back you mentioned of having long and short barrel for the H&R 12 gauge your shooting, one for hunting and one for a camp/riot barrel. You could just get a .22 LR barrel and have a full length barrel than a little device that doesn't have rifling for more accurate shooting.

I don't want this to seem like a flame. It is not my intention. But that insert is nothing more than a short barreled derringer with a longer sight radius. That (Ruger Single 6?) pistol would be more effective over 50 yards than your convertible shotgun with the .22 adapter. And it does not require that is be disassembled to be reloaded. The pistol cal also be used as a hammer or a club.

@Rivieratime The adapter I had made is rifled, I kept the length down to 6" so that it would fit better in my possibles bag. A .357 mag adapter would work well in a .410, look at the thickness of the cylinder walls in a .357 revolver, pretty thin comparatively speaking.

I like the 12 gauge single or 20 gauge single, but like it has been said, the .22LR is not only capable of killing almost anything the shot gun will kill, but it will allow you to take longer shots and in most case give you the ability to make multiple shots much quicker than one can with a single shot shotgun, living in central Texas or any other more open landscape the .22 is gonna serve one better in almost all areas from my experience, and like Dave said thick woods is another story.
@unknwnshooter
@unknwnshooter 13 жыл бұрын
When using a .22 sub-caliber device, stingers are the last thing that you would want to shoot !. Stingers get their hyper velocity from the slower burning powder used in the cartridge, which doesn't fully burn in such a short barrel. Stick to the standard velocity stuff. To increase your accuracy, it would be a good idea to put a witness mark on the adapter and the barrel so that you will line it up in the same place each shot. You can actually rotate it around until you find the sweet spot !

another thought i had is i know rossi has their "matched pairs" and they use to make a 12ga./.22lr model with a wood stock. ive seen them online for about $180 granted you would have to carry another barrel at times but would still have the best of both worlds and its single shot for great reliabillity

I think I'll make a video showing my woods gun as a responce to this. To show what .22 cal option I use. Which is the excellent Ruger 10/22 with scope. I prefer shot placement over carrying heavy shells. Although Dave is right about how awesome a 12 gauge is. I do agree with him. Just the ammo weighs lots. Where as I can prey and sprey with my .22 all day. 3 cents a round has it's advantages. Federal Bulk 500 round pack is a good value. You do get a flyer every now and then though.

the stinger is a great 22 round but in my opinion the velocitor is a little better,, its is a larger grain bullet so its gonna hit harder and i believe it is a hotter load. just something for you to try out, ur in the woods and ur probly gonna have standerd games loads, ur hungry and see a deer 35-40yards away, u are not gonna kill it with game loads, but could with a 22, question is, do you or would u carry a number of buckshot or a couple of slugs for that situation

Dave - with that single shot shotgun in an eastern woodlands like ohio-indiana -PA i could use that on a deer???? I'm new to guns--- i would guess u'd be using a shotgun slug and not buckshot/pellets like for turkey? I get the gun adapter for 22 cal.
@asheradensein
@asheradensein 12 жыл бұрын
I know that question was directed at Dave, but I think I can answer. Yes, a 20 gauge slug is a very effective deer killer, even on large deer. A 20 gauge is a perfectly acceptable survival gun; the only downside is that compared to a 12 gauge, it is a little lacking as far as power goes if you try to take much larger game like moose or bear. I would recommend getting a 12 gauge one day, but a 20 gauge will do just fine until you do.

People have been saying that if you practiced and placed the steel adapter in the same position that you would become more accurate with it. I could be wrong, but I don't think that would work because your barrel, for all intents and purposes in this case, is only 3 inches long. The rest of your shotgun barrel isn't guiding the bullet accurately at all. It would be cool if you could try some squirrel hunting with that setup and see if it's a viable option.

Did you try on of the nails you cooked the squirl on to eject the 22 case, then you wouldn't have to carry that rod, I would carry the same but pistols ain't to popular up here in Canada I would carry the the shootgun with some bird shot and some slugs for long distance shots.

Would most likely be even more accurate IF you take a punch and create an index mark BOTH on the rim of the insert AND on the face of your chamber ... Line up the index marks exactly the same, every shot, and you will group more tightly. And, while it surely is not primitive or traditional, you might also carry a clip-on laser sight, that clamps onto your bore and provides adjustment for windage and elevation. The advantage would be the very light weight, small size, and easy install.

I think these shotgun inserts are a great concept. A bit stand offish as far as maybe accuracy goes. I too carry a .22 caliber side arm, mostly for trapping reasons so i dont accidently blow a huge whole in a fur i need money for. A .22 cal. pistol with a decent set of sights and a reasonable sight radius plus a 100 round box of quality .22 long rifle hollow points can be easily carried, with much less weight and requires much less space. Any one with a little practice should easily be able to kill small game at the average effective range of your shotgun.

Mr. Dave this is an interesting concept. I am wondering is your insert rifled? The reason I ask is cause the insert is the only thing the projectile is in contact with during its flight and wondering how far you could effectively harvest small game and at what max distance would you feel is responcable with it? I am loving these "Yurt journals" and am a huge fan of the "common-man" idea. Thank you for making videos still! Also I would be interested to see diffent .22 rounds tested in this

Just a thought, but what is the possiblity factor of the .22 bullet tumbling against the shotgun barrel? Aside from throwing off target, seems like it could be potentially dangerous to the shooter as well as harmful to the shotgun. Like I said, just a thought, lol. Keep up the great work, Dave, you make us proud.
