.72 is 12gauge (with modified choke, .69 for patched ball) and around 90 grains. -- since noone else has answered.

To help you in your calculations there are 7000 grains in a pound. If you shoot 70 grain loads, you'll get about 100 shots. You'd get exactly 100 with no waste.

One huge advantage that I see with this is the ease with which you can unload your muzzle loaded weapon if need be. Great job Mr. Canterbury, as usual. Thanks for all that you do for the community.

I would like to see a video where you demonstrate how to load different types of loads. I'm particularly interested in learning about buckshot, buck and ball, and slug loads. A loading chart similar to a reloading manual that lists powder and shot measurements would also be useful.

Dave, great idea. Have you considered making the thing a couple of inches longer (the full length of the chamber) so you could load it like a shotshell outside the firearm (removing the need for a long ramrod)? Seems to me like it would be a bit less complicated that way

just a little tip for pyrodex, I use a clear ketchup bottle with a cone top like you'd see at a restaurant and you can give it a couple little squeezes and it comes out alot nicer. there only like a buck at walmart for 2 of them and they work great for me

This is a great idea! Thanks for the video as always Dave! I never knew why I should spend my money on this when I could just reload a shotgun shell until now. The " no tools required" reload makes all the difference in the world! Just when I thought the single shot 12 ga. couldn't get any better..

Way cool Dave Thanks. I took a Savage Stevens 12 gauge 2 3/4 in had it cut back to 19 inch barrel and a mod screw in choke installed makes a great carry gun. With the plastic stock it really light, kicks like hell though. I would really like to try this black powder adapter. I like some of the other adapters too but gun is only 2 3/4 and they don't fit

The problem with a shotshell like you said is you need a tool to pop the primer out. I have been contemplating using a full brass shell (the kind like they use for cowboy action shooting) and enlarging the primer pocket a bit to remove the need for the primer tool. I love your videos man, lotsa good info in that noggin of yours :-)

The choke is at the end. Some shotguns are threaded on the end & you can screw in different chokes. I keep the different chokes in the stock like some people store extra shells in the stock.

owning several H&R's and a rossi , and having shot slugs i FULLY AGREE with your repeated "MODIFIED CHOKE" . slugs or similar deform too much to be accurate . even with bead only sight , my 20ga is quite accurate to 40yd easily . i havent tried black powder yet , but certainly will be . the Oring is excellent idear to keep a slight seal and prevent blowback .

With a hangfire keep the weapon pointed downrange for at least 10 seconds to avoid a "cookoff" (delayed ignition). I had this happen with a 45/70. The shell went off 7 seconds after I pulled the trigger. Had I ejected it right after misfire it would have detonated in my face.

Great item but I would like for the adapter to be longer so it could be loaded and then inserted into the gun for firing. That way, you could load with a short ram rod. You could also have more than one adapter loaded with different charges.

The H&R single shots do have a transfer bar trigger so it is safe until you draw the hammer back.
@Vx777infonet
@Vx777infonet 11 жыл бұрын
The point I am trying to make is on a cap, or flint lock the primer is loaded last. This may not be a problem with this setup as you state. The hammer may have a bar over firing pin, such as in fall saftey. Stiil it appears on almost every other muzzle loader the primer would not be active on loading. So again it may not be a problem but it an exception, if it is not a problem.

Dave I wish I had bet money with Critter or the other Pathfinders I know that you would have worked on this concept. We seem to have the some thought process, I have an old H&R huntsman in 12 ga and it just seems natural to make an inline breech plug adapter for the regular H&R/NEF shotgun. Whats cool is the forestock from the huntsman will fit a regular H&R giving you a collapsible cleaning/ram rod.

I've used some in .38 and 9mm and the pattern is wild at more than 10 feet. They're marketed for close range rodent or snake elimination. I didn't shoot enough to see any long term effects on my barrels. I would definitely NOT recommend pistol caliber shot shells for hunting our self defense. But they are fun so I would buy some if you're interested.
@kullcraven
@kullcraven 11 жыл бұрын
I just checked them out, they are a rifeld barrel, so would be basically a pistol barrel inside your 12 ga. So you say they are 8 inch long, so would be a 8" pistol barrel so good at like 40 yards kinda thing eh? so the purpose is the versatility of using the ammo you can find? They look like they are like 4 inchs, or are they 8". Im thinking i may purchase one hmm thinking rifled sites may work well if adapted to fit.

You CAN shoot slugs out of a full choke. Accuracy MAY be SLIGHTLY affected depending on your individual gun, but there is zero danger involved. The hot lead squeezes right out of the end of the barrel with zero problems whatsoever. I have done it many many times and I know older men who have done it for years and years with no problems. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear about shotguns/choke sizes is that it is dangerous to shoot slugs out of a full choke. People say that you could blow the muzzle apart, or blow the interchangable chokes out of your gun if you have those, or that your gun could just blow up in your face. Completely ridiculous. IT IS PERFECTLY SAFE TO SHOOT SLUGS OUT OF A FULL CHOKE. Please note that i have no experience with shooting Powerbelts or any type of solid copper slugs out of a full choke. I am talking about lead foster-style slugs ie. Remington Sluggers.

Would you happen to know if this is still safe to use in a 3 and 1/2 inch chamber? I have a NEF Pardner and would love to have one of these. But it doesn't specify on the Short Lane website if it's safe with 3 1/2. Some of them say only 2 3/4 or 3, but the 12 gauge doesn't say either way.

Hey Dave, I just bought a 209 muzzleloader adaptor from you all, and this is all new for me, but I'm anxious to get started. I'm going to start out easy, and learn the proper way of doing it, before I try a round ball, and I know you don't recommend it but, I was wondering, how many grains of powder do you use for your 12 gauge round ball?? I've been enjoying your videos ever since the beginning, keep em coming.

If you want to do that then just buy some brass shell casings. You could also use this adaptor that Dave is showing and roll your own "cartidges" similar to the musket cartridges used in the Civil War. Just prime, rip the end off the paper catridge, dump the powder in and tamp the rest in behind it.

if you're using the bore size to figure out how much powder you're using, it's about 100 shots per pound of powder. 7000 grains in a pound, 70-72 grains of powder as per bore size of .729 means 97-100 loads.

I wonder what the possibility is of using shotgun brass but taking some sandpaper to the primer hole to make it easier for 209 primer removal and insertion. It certainly wouldn't be as strong as a milled out piece of steel but a po boy might could use it a few times.

Yeah, that's why I'm a muzzle-loader guy. Never ended up getting a modern firearm, and with ammunition shortages and whatnot, it's quickly becoming a pointless endeavor. at least with my cap and ball I can make two of the three components I need to shoot. (just need a crucible and mold for the lead, and to make a nice ball mill for the powder) caps are cheap, and I might even see how hard it would be to make them, as well.

please reiterate the safety issues with black poweder, if there is an "air gap" between primer and charge or charge and load this can lead to excessive expansion and possible breach explosion, this is why proper seating and sturdy ram rod use are essential to sucessful loads minor point but worth pointing out...

Under this was about eight years ago maybe you'll read it and maybe you won't. I've tried the other way that you showed by cutting the plastic off of the brass on the shotgun shell and it works like a charm but you are right about trying to get the primer out. It seems to me that using the adapter that you're using would be much faster loading so as soon as I can I'm going to get me one of those and try it. Thanks Dave you sure have showed me a whole lot about 12 gauge shotguns. I do have one question I hope you might be able to answer. The shotgun that I have is a 1900 old Iver Johnson. I did not know about the modified choke or full choke when I got this moons and moons ago. But I have shot slugs through this with no problem and it says full choke on the barrel period why am I able to do that? Could it be that it's so old and been shot so many times that the full choke part is been blown out of it? I don't know maybe you can answer this question and if you can't that's okay anyway because I know I can shoot slugs out of it. I can also get a dime down the barrel and yet it says full choke. I don't know maybe you do. Have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry! P. S. I doubt I'll get an answer

Do the instructions say whether you should load the 209 before or after the powder and shot? In another video by a different youtuber demonstrating this same device, he recommends loading the primer after the powder and shot has been loaded. I have always loaded the percussion cap after the powder and projectile have been loaded in my inline, as a safety precaution.

Dave, I don't know a whole lot about gun chokes. What is the title of the video where you describe them? If you don't have one up already could you make one?
