Because the game itself classifies Lamenting Visage as a "Torch". That it also acts like a shield is an unlisted property.

Raising a torch (or lantern) also allows you to use the shield-poke attacks of thrusting weapons (i.e. thrusting swords and spears as well as their larger counterparts)

...That might actually be useful. I never really use torches because I need one hand for the sword and the other for the shield, so it's always the lantern all the time.
