Unmanned stores are good for Japan and its citizens that are disciplined. Japan is an extremely dangerous country for children... Tens of thousands of kids go missing every year. The police don't investigate and if they even acknowledge their disappearance claim they "ran away". I hope the best for those kids but when they don't come back and given the sick almost omnipresent sexualization of children and minors that is extremely commercialized by Japanese elites it's not hard to infer what really becomes of most of them, but it's harder to stomach. I don't want to lecture you but, just in case you or anyone visits there or knows people who are, please don't think you are safe and especially that your kids are inherently safe in any situation, as there are (mostly very wealthy) predators everywhere and the police will do nothing to protect anyone from them. And especially not a "foreigner". This isn't to insult the average working class Japanese person but they really don't get any say in the matter about it. It's not down to them.

In Switzerland we call shops like this Hofladen witch translates to Farm shop. Most have eggs, produce like carrots, potatoes, in the autumn pumpkins. Some have refridgerators with cheese Milk, Meat products and sausages With a scale to measure and then pay in a small cash register. Most of these small roadside sheds even have a barcode you can scan and pay with Twint on the smartphone.

It's always so wholesome to have a window onto a culture like yours, where trust is the norm, rather than the exception. We have state parks here in the USA that use a similar honor system for payment of entrance fees, often in an unmanned booth. That being said, I have two words for these fresh-ish automated shops: Yes, and please!

I cannot emphasize enough how gyoza-obsessed Japanese people are. Throughout my life, I have observed my Japanese mother reacting to foods from other countries. If you give her pierogis, she will say, "Oh! Polish gyoza!" If you give her ravioli, she will say, "Oh! Italian gyoza!" If you give her empanadas, she will say, "Oh! Mexican gyoza!" (I'm pretty sure the empanadas we gave her were South American.) Literally any dumpling she encounters is seen through the prism of gyoza by her. Oddly enough, the exception is Chinese dumplings. She calls those by the correct name. Everything else is "(X) gyoza"

When I lived in Tokyo in 1970, I used to frequent a small gyoza/chuka soba shop in Okachimachi, under the train tracks. It was called "Sei-ryu". It was home to "oni-gyoza" (jumbo 4" long) setto (soup, three gyoza + rice)...all for 260 yen! It was still there when I visited in 1984, but had changed when I visited in 2012. This place was one narrow place, one counter facing the kitchen. Outstanding tanmen, champon as well. Outside, they sold uncooked oni-gyoza to take home. You must be kidding! It may work in places like Martha's Vineyard because everyone knows everyone and they are filthy rich. For $7.30 is a chump change to them.

Im.. So impressed that people can set this up with relatively no worry of thievery..... Im also very sad that we dont have that standard of honesty where i live...😞

We have country farmers stores like this in Virginia. Based on the honor system. Amazing there’s still trustworthy people around. One difference: owner will also accept digital payments such as Zelle, cash-app, PayPal, or Venmo

I'm not a big dumplings person and even I like gyoza. It's that fried side. It brings all the boys to the yard.

WOW! That's amazing how honorable Japan is .... strictly on an honor system! In the US the money box and the Gyoza will be gone in a heartbeat ... Go Japan!!!

There’s a local farm that has something like this for their freshly made apple ciders. They have the bottled cider in a fridge and there’s a money box for you to put the money in. It’s based on an honor system. It’s located an hour north of Seattle.

I would look like a gyoza if I had a shop like that near me. As it’s what I order all the time from my local Japanese restaurant. I order a lot. I prefer steamed and fried on bottom. I get chicken.

They payment method is old school too. Not a machine for swiping a card. At Halloween, some people who are not home will put a bowl of candy on their porch with a note, "Take one". Truly the honor system.

It never ceases to amaze me that not only one, but several shops such as these are operating in Japan. Edit: really interesting, in the second shop why do you think that the money box was styled as a temple? My two cents: so as to appeal to the Japanese customers' sense of honor and awe, perhaps?
