Dog trainer here! When she’s chewing on you or something she’s not supposed to, introduce a phrase such a “leave it” and replace the no chew item, with a toy, or treat (only when she responds to the leave it command) and mark it with a “yes”! Also, when she makes the decision to chew on appropriate things, make it a huge deal! Treat jackpots, or physical affection, whatever works best for your pup! You guys are doing great! Good luck through the teething phase!🙏🏻

Sarah,this is very good advice. i have a rescue dog of roughly 6 years old,we had her for a couple of weeks before i realised she would not eat anything away from home..i found a couple of"lost treats" in my very small car,then one day i was scrolling through my phone eating and sharing chips with her...only to find a ring of chips at her feet..i gave another,it barely touched her mouth and she gently dropped it and asked for another like a good girl she is..same thing..so i praised her with pats instead. someone taught her not to risk a bait and i thank them daily.(mind you when we got home she wanted her chips lol)

I've been a vet tech for 20 years and I can't tell you how much I appreciate you 1) acknowledging how much energy German Shepherds have, that they NEED hard fire training 2) your patience with her is amazing and the list goes on & on on what your doing right. German Shepherds maintain a puppy mentality till 3-5 yrs old. They are A Lot of work. I can't stand when people adopt the dog just because of their breed. People fail to do their homework on these dogs and then they realize they can't handle the breed and return then to the shelters. It's great to see that YOUR taking the time an hour or two A DAY to train her. Your taking all the rights steps and I also live the fact your doing it on your own without a trainer because it's better on a personal level. Yes trainers are great BUT YOU know your dog and their personality so u know what works and what don't or won't. Props to the both of you. Your doing an amazing job!! Can't wait for your baby to be born because they will a great fit!! They are great dogs to have when you have kids because of the dog maintaining a puppy mind for years and the energy they have is why they tend to kids in a great way.

"Settle" was the best command we ever taught our pups. It meant lay down and we are going to chill. Also for the biting - the most effective way taught by one of our trainers is to literally yelp "ow! " and to then disengage with them, hold where they nipped. They understand because it is puppy speak. Addressing the biting is so much harder as they get older. Your guys' dedication to training and giving lots of mental stimulation is amazing, what great doggo parents you are to such a beautiful pup.

I have noticed during this video that when Freya bites you that you say "down" and then reward her with a treat. This means that her she sees you as rewarding her for the nipping, which will reinforce her to carry on doing that behaviour. You need to teach her the "stop" or "no" command for when she does something wrong. You must teach her that biting is not acceptable. Say the word you choose to be the stop or no sign in a loud flat and calm tone, put her in the sit stay position and turn your back on her and ignore her. Do it quickly and precisely and do not praise her in any way. I also agree with others here that you need to have a good strong "stay" command and a separate unique command, as an instant, no messing about recall to heel command. It can save her and other peoples lives. German Shepard dogs are very strong and need clear boundaries, especially as you will soon be bringing a baby into the mix. mouthing and nipping you hurts and is not nice for you, but a nip or bite to a baby, could very well be fatal.

Have you heard of “The Monks of New Skete, the Art of Raising a Puppy” they have their dogs attached them most of the day. They lie down quietly during meal times. We used this book way back with our first dog and have had good results. It’s more about you and being consistent, than it is the dog :) One thing I’d say is…only use the “Come” command when you seriously want them to drop everything and come….it’s a recall that they need to learn for their safety. For example, when you open the gate to go out, use another command, like “let’s go” or whatever….Freja will be part of your family for a long time, and it takes time for them to mature and become the dog you dream of.
@WildWeRoam3 жыл бұрын
That is really good advice, thank you so much for sharing!! And such a good point about the key thing is us being consistent, rather than it being on the pup. Guys, she should run for hours and hours and get properly exhausted and be reprimanded for biting - its not kind to let her dominate! For Freya even teething you need to make sure to put some thing else in her mouth otherwise she will learn that it’s OK to put her mouth on others and yes you want her to be a guard dog but you don’t want her to put her mouth on you or your family members. So if she’s teething give her a toy.
@ashlynnward84183 жыл бұрын
The last thing I swear I just thought of this German shepherds as you know can be used as police dogs and are well known for it but also police dogs aren’t handled by anyone but their handlers, because they can bite anyone else due to instinct and training and they, will so you have to be careful if she is meant to be Dana and she sees Lou as threat let's use an example you were play wrestling Freya might bite Lou and when she is full-grown and doing that to protect her person it’s not going to be nice. I am not saying you have to be mean just be very mindful. Also in California, I am not sure about Hawaii if a dog bites a person and you have to go to an ER they have to report it and it goes on the record and you only have so many times before they say you have to put the dog down you don’t have a choice. I know you guys are doing everything you can for Freya and setting her up for success. I know she will be an amazing dog and an amazing protector because she has amazing parents.

Not necessarily true. Lou isn't saying anything to Freja or giving treats. She's not getting any sort of reward for biting. He's not reinforcing the bad behavior. My working line gsd thrives on praise and praise alone. When she's doing something I don't like I'll ignore it and get her doing something else like obedience and Dana and Lou have been doing the same thing. It's hard to show everything in a short clip, they really are doing such an amazing job with this pup 😍

Great video! In the same vein of the end of the video, I learned while raising my puppy that sometimes it’s okay to try a different training approach if one isn’t working. The tough one for us was biting, eventually I realized diversion wasn’t working for us. I started using “timeout” when he would play too rough and he responded IMMEDIATELY. Our boy really needed a couple minutes to chill and to learn if he wanted to continue playing he couldn’t bite us. Maybe if I was a professional dog trainer I could have gotten diversion to work but he was my first dog and we found what worked for us :) good luck!!!

I don’t notice you using “No” with her. Our Shepherd would try to nip and we corrected her with “No.”. She learned really quick that it wasn’t ok to bite us. I think I mentioned in one of your first videos the perils of utilizing the crate as much as we here in the US tend to do with our puppies. It ensures that they don’t know how to act in the house. And by the time we decide let them out of the crate they are big enough to reach stiff on counters and tables. Bee there! My new MO with my working line puppies is to use expens and baby gates. So in your case I would put an expen around the bed and maybe one to keep the dog out of the kitchen unless you are training her. I’d put a raised cot in the kitchen and teach the dog a place cue when cooking or eating. Eventually the sound of the blender or dishes will send her to the cot where she gets treats or a frozen Kong. I also find that puppies raised outside of the crate are better in the house faster. Not all working line dogs are unable to settle-a lot of it is genetic. Eventually your training is going to bore this dog. Heeling with a lure is not very exciting. Try nosework. You can do it in the house and in new places. It’s inexpensive and easy to train. It also also tired out working dogs.

We got two Australian shepherd puppies at the beginning of this summer. I can so relate to all the bite marks and scratches. They've chewed baseboards, walls and 2 internet cables many of our blankets have corners missing too. 😂We had many sleepless nights. Crate training was a challenge for one of them, but we eventually worked through it. I've also started watching McCann dog training here on you tube. I would recommend watching. Our pups will be 7 months next week. The jumping on counters have been a struggle for us. Otherwise the training here has been going well. We are enjoying all the stages even though it's double the work. We wouldn't change it. They bring such joy and happiness. Take care🙂

@@WildWeRoam You can do it. You guys have literally sailed across an ocean. It will be two years My dog is a Rottweiler husky mix with a few other things thrown in there all working breeds. Around six months you really seem to show improvement year one there’s a drastic improvement and then finally year two the hard work paid off. Don’t forget that you can teach an Old dog new tricks but you can teach a younger dog new tricks a lot faster. Gracie mellowed out she’s part husky so mellow for her haha. You guys are a lot more active than I am to it seems like you might be a little bit more outgoing and adventurous than I am little bit more introverted so I definitely think it’s probably a lot easier for you to go out and meet people maybe I’m reading that wrong or go on hikes not my favorite thing to do like to sit at home and read a book but I go out and I walk with my dog I have fun with her. That’s one of the reasons I got her was to get me out of the house and my bipolar depression and she really helped with that and help me get out of bed some days. And for us to slowly get Gracie out of sleeping from a crate which we used to do for her as we got a baby playpen and we put her in that and it’s a little bit bigger and then eventually we just left her out of the crate and she would roam between my room and I live with my mom so my mom’s room. Also have you ever thought of maybe going to see if there’s a area that does daycare for dogs you have to be careful dog parks because some people don’t pay attention to the dogs and that’s how dogfights can start and then your dad can get injured or your dog could react rightfully so and then do another dog defending herself. I will say that you have to do the research on at the dog daycare‘s because unfortunately there are some bad ones but the ones I go to are great however I live in California so completely different area. Haha. I also say this as most day cares bored and in case you go on a trip or for some reason you need to board her because you’re having construction work done or something it’s nice to know that you have a relationship with The caretakers and so does your dog also I do it because I don’t want my dog to be in a crate all day while I’m at work luckily she can for the most part be outside the crate while I’m at work however if something bad does happen dogs can decide to do the wrong thing they can forget their training and it’s wrong to say I put you in a bad situation and you got into trouble and now I’m mad at you so I’d rather set my dog up for success than failure so by her going to daycare if she lets all of her energy out in the next day she stays home and she’s to tired to get into trouble. Sorry for the paragraph I just know that you guys are responsible and amazing pet parents and I have heard that living on an island you have limited resources.
@ashlynnward84183 жыл бұрын
@@WildWeRoam Quick question do you guys plan on getting her fixed and if so might I suggest doing it before her first heat because most research shows that doing it before her first heat reduces the likelihood that she’ll get cancer because remember getting her spayed removes her ovaries fallopian tube and uterus but not her nipples which are where with a lack of a better term breast cancer can form for them because she will not be producing or ever have had the chance to produce those hormones. I am pretty sure on the producing of the hormone part but I would do your own research and ask your vets. This was like a over 2 years ago. I do remember though specifically making sure to get her in before six months. That’s what our vet said and when we were looking into it at the time that’s what the studies where showing.

In sweden its not allowed by law to have a dog in i cage in the home at all. Just in the car. The puppy is like children you have to keep up with it and look after it all the time but the puppy learns quick to chill with you when you chill IF it has the ability to do so, when its not inside a cage. To learn the commando "No" is also good I think. You hand some treat to the dog and say "no" calm... and if the dog try to take it you take it away for one sek, and try again, when the dog stay just one sek not trying to take it you reward it with the treat. And then for more than one sek, and for longer and longer time! :D Love to see Freya and you guys are amazing!

How many cups of coffee do you drink? I have stopped drinking coffee for more then 2 year now.

I'm all for positive training and treats... But you need the command 'no' or 'stop' in some cases such as biting. Ignoring works very well if you just want her to relax or don't want her to get hyperfocused on you or something else. But if she's already so focussed that's she is biting you, she needs to snap out of it in her head (dogs are very focused on one thing at the time) and you need a firm and low toned command. (Yelp or ouch can have too much energy and actually work as a reward if not done correctly.) It's all about your energy! Not so much about hers😁 Yes she's going to have lots of energy but if you remain calm she will calm down eventually aswell. Just ask yourself what is it that you really want from her. Because if it is that she stays calm it doesn't really matter if she walks, sits or lays down, right? It's more about her energy while she is in any position. Just let her walk around and let her do what she wants. Ignore her, do your thing and relax a bit 😉 Say 'no' when she crosses a hard boundary and distract with a toy. Then ignore again. I feel like with this method she's getting way too much attention all day and it's costing you a lot of energy. She doesn't need constant attention in order for you to set clear boundaries when needed or to reward her with a treat once in a while. But you're doing very well in keeping your energy low, keep up the good work! Let her be a pup too, she doesn't need to be that calm dog that lies down all day yet😜

A very good way if puppy’s are kind of biting is to grab the snout very quick to show that nibbling or biting is not okay, because „don’t bite“ they do not understand, neither ignoring! The grabbing should be firm and it could be she will whine, well of course don’t hurt your little sweetie! My cat liked to bite me in my lags when I went showering, couldn’t help that😂but it was really annoying and painful!

Take a look at kikopup. I taught my rescue to stop attacking the vacuum in no time. She’s all positive training and awesome. Oh 2 secs later there’s kikopup ha

From my experience, (I have owned 5 dogs over the years) it takes until dogs are about 2 years old before they settle down and get over all their puppy-like behaviours.

If she spends that much time in her crate that why she is so hyper when you let her out .. She isn’t getting near enough exercise.. She will require at least 6 to 8 hours of exercise a day .. She is a puppy with tons of energy , havoc is what puppy’s do and they usually aren’t able to stay calm down for that amount of time 🤨

In case you didn't know this, Cats instinctively know how to swim (maybe evolutionary because they don't like to swim). Dog must be taught. Best teacher is another dog.

What are you feeding her with for treats?
@maureencoleman92483 жыл бұрын
Beautiful beautiful dog, but I would not let her bite on you you can use the word no bite, Also with crate yes it can become their safe place specially when baby does come but you leave the gate open so she’s able to go in and out at her own well when she is feeling anxious or wants to take a nap

Can you explain why you got a German Shepard? Why you picked this breed?

Hi there :) Thanks so much for asking, we actually explained it in one of our previous videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZa0apyArtWli5o Hope you are having a wonderful Sunday! xx

You get a calm and relax puppy, when she can "wild we roam", get her energy out by playing and running around free and not be drilled in that old fashioned way with a crate and be overwhelmed when she is outside of the crate and unsure of herself. In many countries outside of US crates are illegal. You get very well trained dogs without animal abuse "as well".

Babies are exhausting, whether human or animal because they need so much attention. I had a kitten one time, I probably wouldn’t do it again. I found it really tough. You guys are doing really great and she is obviously really smart. On a completely different topic: you guys used to be caffeine free, but there’s lots of coffee happening nowadays. (No judgment btw, I drink tea all day) I just wondered if it was decaffeinated coffee or if you just relaxed your rules? xxxx

Love your freya videos. 😀 I personally think one or even more hours of trainig is waaaay too much for 17 weeks. If you want a calm dog do less. Sounds weird but it‘s true. And she should get off leash time every day, to run, sniff and explore. Actually sniffing is one of the best thing to get them tired. I was working 8.5 hours on the computer every day from when my puppy was 12 weeks old. But I do have other struggels with him. So I think it‘s great that your open about yours.

Yes, she loves sniffing soooo much!! It is so cool to imagine what the world must be like through puppy sense's, with the endless importance of new smells everywhere, ha :) Thank you for your comment, and we hope you and your dog are having a great Sunday!! xx

Can't recommend Zak George's channel enough. Also buy a clicker online and everytime she lies down say "settle, good settle" click and reward. You guys will get there x

It's going to take a lot longer than one 24 hour period to train Freya. LOL Lou & Dana, you think having a dog is exhausting wait until you have your baby. I'm sorry I love you guys but the old Lou just six months ago wouldn't give up??? Do you not remember the trip to the Bahamas? One way trip, couldn't handle sailing and whatever else happened on the trip so you sell the boat and fly home???

This content is fantastic! It teaches people the responsibility and all that goes it to having a dog. I have an Australian Shepard. Very high energy. Before I got him I purchased a book Training The Best Dog Ever by Larry Kay and Dawn Sylvia Stasieswicz. It's a great book and I highly recommend it. I especially found it helpful when teaching the down stay command. You two are doing amazing with her. She is so smart and is learning so quickly.

Thank you so much, Stephanie!! We really appreciate your comment :) Indeed, we definitely wanted to show all sides to our life with Freja.... not just her cuteness but also the challenges :) Thank you as well for those recommendations!! Sending you our love xx

Why don't you correct her when she bites you? What kind of trainer wouldn't show you how to do that? Correction doesn't need to include shouting or even a raised voice. Other than that, I love what you're doing :)

I'm guessing your garden is not entirely secure or Freja could have free reign out there, sniffing, digging and wearing herself out through play, in between big walks. I'm sure she'd find a sunny spot to sleep.
@WildWeRoam3 жыл бұрын
Your guess is right--we have had many moments of letting her play off leash and she goes exploring and sniffing around the backyard, but then she runs to our neighbor's yard and doesn't come back when we call for her... it has been a process, ha! But we are getting there and still full of love :) Hope you are having a wonderful Sunday!

Ya it's not easy having a GSD puppy , it's lot of work to have them trained properly.
@dianam98483 жыл бұрын
You need another puppy to wear that one out. Then they just chew on each other (and learn how teeth hurt) and wrestle all day and conk out and don't rely on you for entertainment. The calmest house I've been in had six dogs (like that trainer video with the magically calm dogs!)
@WildWeRoam3 жыл бұрын
That makes so much sense!! Not sure if we have a capacity for another dog at the moment, but I can totally see the wisdom in that advice. Wonderful advice, thank you for sharing, Diana!! Sending big hugs xx
