So inspiring, thanks! This is the one "regret" that speaks most to me. Less work, more traveling, more dreams I'm already doing. But I worry about stuff, I worry about the future... And I'm sure that a lot of worries would not materialize themselves. Yet I still worry...

Notice how all of the regrets are individualistic and matter to the person who is dying! In the real life we tend to worry more about others until we realize it’s just you. It’s always been you. Until the end

One of the greatest comments I have ever read on KZbin. Thanks a lot for that! It is always about perception. You decide how to perceive your life. It doesn’t matter what anybody thinks of you. Their thoughts about you don’t matter in the slightest. It’s about you and always will. Very well said.

When you’re young, you care so much what others think of you. When you get older, you care less what others think of you. And when you are old, you realize no one was ever thinking of you at all. (They were too wrapped up in what others thought of _them.)_ I heard that once, and it stuck with me ever since. The moral of the story is live the life you want and don’t worry what others are thinking of you... Because they’re probably not anyway.

@In_time

@@maxsheng8215 _of course,_ lol. We’re not dead 🙈 No, what is meant by “no one is thinking of you” is _no one that matters_ is thinking _unkindly_ about you. So be free. No one that matters (like loved ones) is going to be purposefully critically cruel regarding what your goals/dreams are in life, so you should not live in fear of what they think. Anyone that matters (like loved ones) will take care to encourage you and build you up and spur you onward. Anyone that _doesn’t matter_ (like your enemies) truly _doesn’t_ matter... because they’re your enemies and their opinion never mattered in the first place 😉 so it’s even less of a reason to live your life concerned with what they think of you when/if they do at all. (And even so with both parties still, thoughts will be fleeting because, try as we might, we all tend to focus on self the most.)

I don't have any of these regrets. I left behind childhood friends. They have their own troubles and responsibilities. Not interested in chasing a dream or passion, and spirituality is an empty cup for me. I stopped worrying what others thought of me long ago. My main concern is just to have fun, exercise, and keep working until retirement.

I almost fell off a cliff once. My life flashed in my mind, much like in the movies. Memories flashed from that point back to when I was a child. They seemed to be the most meaningful scenes from my life. I can’t remember most of them but some were just me playing legos with my brother as a kid, hanging out with my friends, and several were of me bending down to pet the various pets I had throughout my life. It wasn’t memories of when I got hired for jobs, or got raises, or graduated, or shit like that. I think about this more and more nowadays. I don’t want to have to be on death’s door again to have perspective.

Wow. Thank you for sharing. I've thought a lot about how much of what we (I?) dream / desire is visualized in the 3rd person...but I live my life in 1st person. And (until I realized this) I didn't visualize things I wanted the way I'd actually experience them, in the 1st person. The thought of bending down to pet your pets...that reminds me of that. And it's a sweet moment where it's just you and the animal, sharing a connection.
@AegisAuras
@AegisAuras 10 ай бұрын
@@nickdeacon I don’t think I’ve ever thought of that before. That’s a very good observation. In dreams, even if I can tell each of the characters is a manifestation of my subconscious, there’s still always one character I inhabit more than the others, seeing from their eyes in 1st person. I suppose personifications in the psyche viewed from the 3rd person are considered “distant” to the self; distant to the ego, perhaps. There’s probably a lot of potential depth there to be explored.

My mother passed last Wednesday evening after a long illness and even though i find it tragic and heartbreaking, I was lucky enough to be by her side and she was lucky enough to have me and some of her family there. I felt her last pulse and was happy that her suffering was over. I myself have had a decade long history of health anxiety but in the months and days leading to her final moments my mother expressed no fear of dying whatsoever. I find this incredibly brave and inspiring. She and I no longer share the heavy burden of her long slow demise as I felt pain because of her being in pain. Now at nearly 55 I have a brand new life in front of me because she’s gone and I no longer have her to look after and worry about. So death is a gift to end suffering and life is a gift to start living. It’s only 3 days since she went but I can feel her everywhere and she’ll live on in my memories until I take my final breath someday.

No one's headstone says, "I should have worked longer". I have a coworker in his 60's who said to me that he wouldn't know what to do if he retired so he just keeps working. Mind you that the job is the most soul-sucking, meaningless, melancholy pit of despair you have ever seen. It's just awful. I have another coworker in his late 50's who is like a robot. Same routine, same conversations, same jokes, same stories, same everything, day in and day out, over and over and over, no hobbies, no nothing, just comes to work and goes home, wash, rinse, repeat. He too is just going to keep working. Financially, they both could have stopped working long ago so that's not an issue. I've tried to tell them that there's more to life than just work but it falls on deaf ears, so I've stopped talking to them about it. We've had people die at work, no joke, two of them, old dudes. Not me, I'm not financially as well off but I'm saving as much as I can for the next year and I'm out of the rat race. No more alarm clock, no more commute, no more enduring the incompetence of management, no more clock-watching, no more putting up with nonsense, no more weekends flying by and gone before you know it, no more Monday mornings, no more working for the weekend, no more of any of that, every day will be Saturday when I "retire". I'll be on a budget, but I'll survive. I'd rather live on my terms than die with a big pile of cash. I can think of a million things that I'd rather be doing than carrying on a meaningless existence and wasting away at a job that's choking the life out of me.

Golden advice for young people under us, just stay at home with your parents as long as possible if you have a good bound ofcourse. And invest big parts of your money in a index fund or etf funds. In a time window your capital will be grown at least double the size. If you are like 39 you will have a decent passive income. I'm talking about a yearly extra income with the rent of your funds. Will even be a lot more if you are able to keep your work in all those years, and no problems with your health Its pretty easy overtime to build wealth with passive investments. At least if you start at a proper age with the right knowledge. Whatever you do don't buy a stupid car to impress dumb women I'm advicing etf or index funds, because it doens't require tons of knowledge about the stock market. And you are like investing in the whole market of a certain list of company's. Those list involves big company's and are like 1400 company's. And the market on the long term alway's spins around a profit marge around 10%, so you defo beat inflation with such a investment Don't be afraid of investing in stock, people who lose big money with such things. Just invest all their money in a few compan'ys. And that's alway's a bad idea and involves a lot of risk. But if you invest in tons of company's and build it progressive, then its really a good decision to build wealth it The taxes are a downer ofcourse, but you only pay taxes on your rent and if you decide to sell. the thing about life is either way you're going to suffer. if you're content to work a low paying job and settle you will suffer, badly. if you embrace that you will suffer and willingly decide to suffer in huge amounts every day, you can make lots of money. money is a tool that gives you freedom and power. power to make choices others can't, the power of self-ownership, the power to influence others, the power of security, the power of controlling your time. the choice is yours, I hope you choose to take the hard path and you will come out on top.

Money is important for survival and freedom to do things, but if you work too much, especially in a job you're not passionate about, it may lead to 'I wish I hadn't worked so much'. I suppose it's not so bad if one works an uninteresting (to the individual) job just for the money, and has enough time and money to pursue one's own passions and dreams outside of working hours. But in my experience, having a full time job in a field I lacked passion for truly felt meaningless. Like, I was meaninglessly passing time and life away. I'm working part time now in a field I'm passionate about, and I'm much happier and find my work more meaningful now. On my deathbed, I wouldn't regret taking a major pay cut to do something I believe in. But I would most certainly regret if I were to not take the risk, and stick to my old field just for the sake of money. Human life is only a few decades short, typically, regardless of accumulated wealth. Accumulated time from doing meaningless work, that, you'll never recover.

It is inherent in human behavior that we all make decisions and do things based on what we think is best for us at the moment. I am 70 years old and I don't regret any of my decisions or actions. That is simply because I realize that they were done for the above reason. The only things I regret are some of the consequences of my decisions, most of which, were completely out of my control. I agree with all the items, but lets be real here: "I wish I travelled more. I wish I didn't care so much about my job". As much as I want to quit my job, I cant. I didn't have wealthy parents to give me a great starting block, and I'm sure a lot of other people don't have that luxury either. So as much as we "wish" how things were, there will always be sacrafices we have to make. You can't travel more, but not care about your work. Unfortunately those things have a knock on affect.

Any more than I can pop some pill and solve it. There are specific reasons why I’m not happy. Like not having a decent job or not having a loving relationship with someone. I try and try to fix those things, but I’ve just been unsuccessful. But I’m not going to lie to myself and put on an artificial smile when it’s not how I truly feel.

@@Anna-bd7or I recently quit nursing as I hate it and it doesn’t make me fulfilled at all. Working in a very toxic environment isn’t worth sacrificing for. From constant gossiping, backstabbing, the lack of support from the management, micromanagement and to being treated like a piece of sh*t. These are the most common themes in mega corporations and even small ones although there are a few corporations that do still value their employees. I also don't agree with how the healthcare system is running. They are treating the symptoms of diseases but not the root causes. Promoting a very poor diet and just medicating them although some pharmacological interventions can be beneficial but their approach is not holistic at all and is lacking many aspects of life that are needed to have a healthy lifestyle. This type of lifestyle is what I truly do not agree with. I was in a career that is deeply flawed in so many ways. There are some nursing careers that are better than the other but most of them aren't holistic. Most businesses only care about making money and not about the well-being of their employees and clients. I then decided to slowly dig my way out. I spent every drop of my limited free time working on meaningful projects I truly care about and applied for as many jobs as I could until I found a job that is more enjoyable and is a positive workplace to be in. I am now an office manager in a clinic and do creative stuff via KZbin and freelancing on my days off. I am still at a corporate job but I’m happier than working as a Nurse. I like the people I work with and they treat me with respect and as a human-being. That’s what’s more important to me. Having a sense of purpose through creating online content I truly care about also helps a lot. My freelancing gigs also give me creative outlets. I like the variety of tasks of being a manager as well as it offers tons of creativity. This job also gives me more free time for myself and I can spend some time socializing with my loved ones and meeting new folks. I couldn’t have been much happier if I didn’t start taking actions to change my life.

Amen 🙏 “Get busy living or get busy dying” - famous line was delivered both by Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, and by Ellis “Red” Redding, played by Morgan Freeman, in the movie The Shawshank Redemption.

The tricky thing about these things is that you can't truly, 100%, relate to them until you have built empathy around it. And the only way to truly have empathy is to go through it. And to truly go through it... I had a friend share with me the other day that he can better connect with me now that he has kids, before that it's just a concept. That feels like the constraint and the reality of our lives in this form.

If I live as long as my dad I've thirty-five years ahead of me. If I lived as long as my brother I'd be gone by now. I'm already aware that I'll wish I'd been less self-conscious, and that there's no such thing as being a 'good enough' parent or partner. If nothing else, everybody gets a hug every day and is told that they're loved. Everybody is made to feel good about themselves. That costs nothing.

Notice how all of these are around "I" and "me" and people wanting stuff for themselves and themselves experiencing different things throughout life they didn't earlier. There is basically not one out of these 24 regrets that is focused on others and treating others better. The only one is "I wish I was a better partner", but notice how no one said "I wish I was a better parent l". No one regrets how they treated others, especially their kids. No one care about that...

The problem is people live reality like some kind of reference or standard they just cannot afford to mess up. But what's stopping you from playing it like a video game? Do side quests and what not. The only necessity is to ensure food, a house and internet connection. Once you've achieved that much stability, it's a free for all then onwards

Well, 1) health problems 2) financial problems And that's pretty much it, in that order. If one is healthy AND financially secure though and living in a 1st world country, they have no excuse to go out and live life to it's fullest.

It's important to acknowledge all of these things to have the right attitude and to enjoy life more, but it's also important to acknowledge that actually doing a lot of what's mentioned here is easier said than done, and not to beat yourself up for not accomplishing them all

Actually you never will. This is the human condition. If they were young again and had time, many would probably live it the same way. It's just the stages and cycle of life. It's the same way as adults we see teens doing dumb shit that we once did and one day they'll watch teens and think the same thing at our age. It's just the cycle of life. That's what's terrifying is that we know it but still can't change
