P. O. Ackley considered the .243win a "magnum" cartridge. 26" barrel is needed to get the full potential.
@johnnorman77082 күн бұрын
I think a lot of cartridges get short changed by getting the "carbine" treatment. I understand the whole idea, but if you wanted performance you gotta have enough barrel to burn the fuel. If you want a carbine you may want a completely different cartridge too.

Don't mess with the shoulders and you won't eat lead. 24 deer hams and backstraps(12 tags) is a lot of meat. Bonus, no reason to gut the deer if you process immediately as we do. That being said, I now hunt exclusively with Barnes TTSX...still not messing with shoulders.

Back in the last century I bought and loaded the very first Nosler Ballistic Tips in 7mm 150gr going a Chrony'd 3250 fps in 7mmRemMag from a 26" Browning A-Bolt Medallion. High BC .500+ ish and simple load of IMR4350 out of the Nosler manual of the day. Very accurate! Deer shot within 300yds was like hitting with a Berger bullet, all shrapnel and rarely a decent exit wound if any. Did make an amazing (fluky the boys called it) kill on a great whitetail buck that just missed the book. We had to estimate the range using 3' paces and a truck odometer, 745yds. Dead calm winter day and I had time to set up on the truck's hood while my bud had the spotting scope going. It was a bang, he bucked and took a couple steps and turned around and dropped. No ground shrink as we drove up! Only NBT I ever recovered that looked like the Ads. Big Varmint bullets then but not now IMO. In Alberta we have Grazing Reserves that start at 48,000 acres and up that is public land open for big game in November. This was not road hunting around others' private land, we don't like those rubber-hunters much. I did a lot of spot & stalk when I was younger over some long distances of open terrain.

About this lower than advertised velocity explained. Many of the slower powders seen in reloading manual will give you the top velocity in a long 24/26 inch barrel. Put that slow powder load into a 18 or 20 inch barrel, and very commonly they will drop 200 to 350 fps below spec. The cure for a short barrel is to reload one of the faster recommended powders, then you may loss not more than about 80 fps. A manufacturer usually load the slow powder in a long barrel to get the highest advertised velocity, but kicks the carbine barrels into a ditch. A chronograph is a must, otherwise you really can't know what your dope is.

Better marketing. Less recoil. More available ammo options(suppose this would depend on your area but 6.5 is on every shelf here). Both are fantastic deer calibers. @@shotgunhollerbbq2225

You can hit those velocities in a 20" 6 ARC, the shorter barrel alone doesn't account for those being so slow out of a .243, that's a very weak loading. They must be keeping it slow on purpose to keep it from totally fragging

I've heard that the 95 grain Ballistic Tip was specifically designed with a thicker jacket so that it penetrated better? Anyone else?
@southerntriplej80612 күн бұрын
yes you are correct. tried them all the 95 gives pretty good penetration and will exit broadside.

Personally I feel that ammo companies should sponsor you to do what you are doing with various ammos. For my part you cover pretty much every aspect of the ammos. Onward and upward buddy.

Seen other manufacturers loads that still deliver over 900 ft lbs at 400 yards for less than the Nosler cost. In this case I don't see the value in cost vs performance. Perhaps a high shoulder hit to switch off electrical impulses. If they shot WELL in my particular firearm I'd probably use them (not to 400 yards), but I'm too much of a tight *ss to find out! 😅

Nosler BT's are aweful. I loaded some in a 30 herrett once and they were loosing the jacket and fragmenting at only 1900 fps.

That's what they were designed to do can't complain for them working as designed. Hornady ssts are similar devastation on game but they don't hold together.

Nosler may have had to use a faster burning powder that has a lower velocity ceiling like 4064 instead of a slower powder because of the powder shortages.
