I'm 42 so I've seen some great qbs play, I truly believe Marino was the greatest I ever saw. It's a shame he never had a good enough team around him to win the Super Bowl and that's how he's judged, because a few rings and everybody would think he was the greatest.

@jrjcarl
@jrjcarl 8 жыл бұрын
People judge him because he has no ring and appeard in only one SB. Well, Dan Marino never had a defense to carry him, and he never had a decent running game, he carried the franchise over his back; When he was injured in 1993, the Dolphins didn't make the playoffs, when he returned the team only missed the playoffs in 1996 until he retired in 1999. That symbolizes how much he carried the franchise. Dan Marino is one of the greatest to play this game, and nobody can deny it.
@gregtrust5599

Not to mention Marino had that team in 93' at 5-1 and most likely going to the super bowl, then he tore his Achilles, and they finish 9-7 which is pathetic, Brady gets injured and the pats still finish 11-5. Marino is the GOAT

@MichaelMurphy-kj3xf
@MichaelMurphy-kj3xf 8 жыл бұрын
greg trust You are mostly right, but the Dolphins had top 10 running games for 4 or 5 of those years. Not to mention that his last 3 playoff losses (again - he was getting old at that point) he scored a total of 13 points and threw 6 picks, 1 TD - not great / and not all his fault.
@gregtrust5599
@gregtrust5599 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Murphy Not his fault at all he had no help on both side of the ball... Here are the ranks for rushing and passing for the Dolphins during Marino's career. Marino's first full season was 84', but he was behind the helm after game 5 in 83', so this isn't a full season: Pass Rush 83' 19th 13th 84' 1st 16th 85' 2nd 18th 86' 1st 25th 87' 1st 23rd 88' 1st 28th last 89' 3rd 27th 90' 4th 22nd 91' 3rd 25th 92' 2nd 24th 93' 1st 25th-Marino is injured 94' 2nd 13th 95' 4th 21st 96' 11th 19th-JJ takes over 97' 2nd 29th-2nd to last 98' 10th 24th 99' 14th 22nd Thirteen years in the league and Marino keeps the Dolphins in the top 4 passing wise with no top end receiver or rushing game. The Dolphins lack of balance is shown in the stats. No one in the passing game has been as good, and no one will ever be as good. I will add the defensive stats during these years if u would like as well.

Marino was so good he shredded the 85’ Bears defense when they seemed invincible to everyone else. It was a classic styles makes fight. Marino just seemed to have their #. Too bad the Dolphins didn’t get past the Pats that year. The best pure passers I've ever seen are Dan Marino, Warren Moon, John Elway, Terry Bradshaw, and Randall Cunningham. Marino got his release from Broadway Joe but was much more accurate. The deep passes those guys threw, especially Moon and Marino, were tight spirals thrown almost like javelins. Dante Culpepper before he got hurt could throw a big time deep ball as well. I'm not saying that they're the best (though you can make a case for Moon , Marino and Elway); I'm talking about throwing the best deep passes. Jim Plunkett and Doug Williams also threw vertically well.

+NIKO SAMUELS very nice list. I didn't see (outside of films) Jurgensen, Lamonica, or Hadl which is why I left them off my list. Fouts was a great passer but didn't always throw a tight spiral (that by his own admission is why they lost the AFC title game in Cincinnati). Jeff George was very similar to what Jay Cutler is now; the ultimate tease. You're definitely right about his throwing of the football. Jay Schroeder was an excellent choice as well. At UCLA he was Aikman's backup as well as a pitcher for the baseball team.

+NIKO SAMUELS You're absolutely right. In fact Aikman HATED Barry Switzer which was a huge part of why he transferred to the Bruins. Ironically, he got Barry a Super Bowl ring (well, O'Donnell got them a Super Bowl ring).

What a great passer Marino was. Pro-Football-Reference does a study to determine the Value that a QB gives to his team in the Reg. Season and Dan is in the Top 10 among QB's. They also did a study to determine their Value in the playoffs.

@dennismumford6108 4 жыл бұрын
The P-F-R study showed that Marino gave his TEAM a Negative Value in 10 playoff games and a Value in the single digits in 2 others. His overall Value was a terrible NEGATIVE 156.

@dennismumford6108 4 жыл бұрын
Favre's Value was 302, Warner 422, Staubach 461, Aikman 527, Young 580, Elway 767, Bradshaw 903, and Montana 1292. Again Marino's Value was NEGATIVE 156. This study was done in '08 and never updated so no Brady, Manning, Brees, etc.

Man Marino stats wise played with the worst defences in the game and he kept winning. That can only take you so far and that's why he didn't win a championship. Never had a running game either, you blame the organization for not growing something around him. John Elway never won until he had Terrell Davis there with a great offence and defence. The great Troy Aikman never through more then 25 tds in a season. He had the best defence and great players around him. Dan Marino the greatest quarterback to ever play.

I have not seen a quarter back with better skills the Mr.Marino. past or present. No one has his release, the vision to see the field, first class leadership. Mr. Marino is the Sheriff.

He was scary good. There are a lot of people who are fans of the NFL because of Dan Marino. I think that that is why the NFL made the rule changes so that it is much easier now to get his kind of numbers.

He's a top 10 QB of all time. Never had a defense or running game. Yes, not winning a Super Bowl does hurt his legacy still can't take away what he did though. I hate how people will say qbs who won one are better like Eli and Ben. He has the best passing season in NFL history hands down. 5084 yards, 48 tds, 9 300 yard games, 4 400 yard games, and 362 completions in 1984! Unheard of. Imagine the numbers Dan could put up in today's NFL. As a pitcher which is like the qb position, I'll take breaking records and going into the HOF instead of winning a championship tbh #PhinsUp #DolphinNation

Considering Montana had all the talent in the damn world around him... I'm just gonna say that Dan Marino was the better passer. The fact that he reach the levels of play that he did with the amount of talented he had around him is STILL mind blowing to this day. 5k+ passing yards and 48 touchdowns then would be today' so equivalent to six thousand passing yards and 60-70 touchdowns.

From a pure passing standpoint, Marino had the best passing arm in NFL history. He had an accurate cannon and that legendary release. If he had a quality defense or a reliable running game, he would have won a Super Bowl. Manning and Brady had great arms and championships, but Marino is the gold standard for an NFL arm.
