I don't have a lot of time in my life these days, working two jobs just to make it. Anything I watch or listen to is usually sped up to at least 1.5x, to save time... not you though. I always make time to relax for 30-45 mins watching you make progress. It's one of the few things I look forward too every week. I just wanted to say thank you.

Martijn i want to say that of everything I have watched in my nearly 80 years of life nothing has compared to the pleasure i am getting from watching your journey. The photography, the views, the music, the silence, the slow pace, your honesty, everything about it. I feel like I know so many parts of your land to walk on and when i got to bed at night i take myself and quietly walk around through the trees, the stones, the wildflowers, the dampness, the rock walls. I can’t thank you enough for sharing this story with us. A famous English gardener once said that in making a beautiful garden, nothing must offend the eye. Nothing offends the eye with everything you are doing. Again, thank you.

Beautifully said! Those were my very thoughts ...I watch to decompress and forget about this insane world we live in ...it's like going into a meditative state. When I see mountain scenes like this I think of music like "Finlandia" ....I'm not even sure Finland has majestic mountains like these ...but it gives a majestic feeling. Italian Alps are ideally placed in southern Europe ...high enough to stay cooler in the summer ...although I'm very interested to see how Martijn will be dealing with winters there ...it seems he may be in a race against time to get one of those cabins done. But he is resourceful ...I just wish he had more people on the project ...but he doesn't seem to be in a hurry. And that is part of what makes him so appealing ...cool, relaxed, confident Matijn, taking time to commune with nature ...while still getting stuff done!

oops! wrote this before I saw the scaffolding episode with all the help arriving ...and 'resident artists' as well! A great little community seems to be coalescing! Pretty soon it may be like a little commune I lived at in Topanga Canyon up above LA in the mountains above the Pacific between the Pacific Palisades and Malibu ...only problem was there were too many "chiefs" and not enough "Indians" ...and not enough gardening got done or the million other chores for a community of 30-50 people at any given time.

I understand, because for many it looks attractive but really to do something as courageous that needs physical work is what is mind blowing. Being at peace with one’s self and nature is hard for millions, when the alternative is to remain in packed cities and live in crowded spaces. It’s about choice. Bravo🎉to Martijn.

I would really make a bit more protection around the outdoor kitchen. Where I live in North Italy, in the summer you can have big thunderstorms (temporale) with huge hailstones and the wind can come literally from any direction. A plastic cover that you can secure is the absolute minimum I think. We have a veranda of almost 3 meters deep, with rain normally you have at least 1 meter wet, with a temporale sometimes everything is wet.

The Outhouse, Privy or Long drop Toilet is an art to get right. A few pointers if I may: The door should open inward, so that you may enjoy the view and feel the breeze while being able to kick the door shut with your foot if anyone comes past. The door itself should have a little motive cutout, usually a half moon or star or anything really so long as it's big enough for airflow and light when the door is shut. You might like to have a plastic barrier Infront of the seat on the vertical part of the toilet box as this will prevent pee from running through the gaps and down the floor. And lastly, a little candle holder shelf behind the door just above the toilet paper. There may be other requirements, but these are my non-negotiable items.

If you are planning to grow potatoes again a good method is to grow them in buckets. Instead of having to build soil up around the stems you just add more soil to the bucket. It will save you space in your vegetable plot and, when they are ready to harvest, you just tip out the bucket. No digging at any stage.

Martijn, your creative talent, hard work and drive reminds me of Dick Proenneke, a self-styled Thoreau who spent a good many years living alone in the Alaskan wilderness. It was a life of self sufficiency and in his journals he reflected on building his tiny cabin with simple hand tools. He wrote, “To look around at what you have accomplished in a day gives a man a good feeling. Too many men work on parts of things. Doing a job to completeness satisfies a man.” Martijn, it’s obvious that your hard work provides you with a great deal of satisfaction. Sharing your weekly videos are an inspiration. Thank you.

Your home is already beautiful and awesome. The wind in the trees is so refreshing to hear. Nice to meet your parents. They’re like you, quiet and industrious. So nice to have a neighbor who sells cheeses. Such beauty all around you.

I have watched from the very beginning when you first started your work on this property and am amazed at the resilience of your spirit and your work ethic. I am so inspired by your brilliant efforts to survive in the Italian Alps. Thank you for sharing this with the world. The peace you so seek and many of us as well, is at your doorstep. Loved the visit with the Italian Priest, your neighbor. God Bless You. From Michigan in the USA.

😐 I was thinking.. as you started to break down the kitchen “noooo, I’m gonna miss that setup there” and then you turned and looked into the camera and said the same thing! Hahaha ~ while you’re answering to my thoughts and this dang mosquito here is snacking on me , and dinner sizzles in the pan there.. I’ve seemingly left my body and joined your camp too! My spirit is with you.. I promise to be quiet.. and Thanks for having me as well! ~ only wish I could be more help ! 😜🧀🥖🍻

Your blogs always fly by and leave me with lots of questions and imaginings. I was surprised to see how sad I was to see the old kitchen go. It was so picturesque. Your new digs are beautifully crafted, practical and user friendly, but there is something more picturesque about stone. At times, I got lost as to whether I was looking at you or your father. The weather was amazing and kind of scary. It looked like your parents enjoyed their visit and I enjoyed that your passing traffic is a herd of cows. Looking forward to next week to see what comes next. Thanks for sharing.

They're an absolute ruckus and they damage the hearing of the animals quite severely, which is both painful and debilitating.

@@SwedishCook1 No. It attracts them. It's nice to hear where something is if you want to kill it ;) Bells have only one purpose; sacrificing animal welfare on the altar of human convenience.

Fantastic Martijn, it looks great. I love how everything went together on this. Everything is nice and close for you ,saving you some time. And just the look of it all I like a lot. I hope your parents were comfortable during their stay. It will not be long now and the really hard work begins, tackling those big rocks on the roof. But I just bet that crane you designed will handle the job. Thank you for another video into your life there, I have enjoyed them all.

As a sewer, I so appreciate your Mom actually sewing with an ‘open view’…seems you’ve got enough power to generate all sorts of things. Can you ask why all the cows wear the very loud bells…is it so they don’t get lost and the farmer can hear them all & find them if necessary? If you asked for some of that raw milk/cream, you would be so nurtured by it, making good full milk yogurt in that glorious kitchen as well as heavenly berries with heavy cream as those fruits begin to mature. Love that your steadfast parents lend their help doing the tasks that make a home….washing, chopping trees, sewing. See that you learned right living & appreciation of nature from their focus…what a pleasure to see all your plans unfolding before our eyes. Thank you for this weeks ‘calm before the storm’!

I also sew and appreciated the moment seeing Mrs Doolard on her sewing machine! I also feel sorry for the cows with them very loud bells hanging on them, for overlookers it might sound good but I doubt its any therapy for the cattle 😒
