Cat got your tongue. Another place this was used was aboard sailing vessels. When a sailor had committed a wrongdoing, oftentimes the Boatswain's Mate (pronounced 'bosun's mate') would, on Captain's orders, punish the offending sailor with a certain number of lashes with the Cat-o-nine-tails. This lashing would often be severe enough that the offending sailor would no longer be able to speak through the pain. The Cat had his tongue. So, when asked a question, and you don't have an answer, people would ask, "Has the Cat got your tongue?"

For #20, there are 3 sayings related to one incident: An unscrupulous seller would place a cat in the bag, and try to sell it as a small pig. If the buyer bought the pig in the poke, and then opened the bag, he let the cat out of the bag, and was left holding the bag.

People say break a leg typically two actors and actresses because they hope they will make the cast. Back in the old days when people had to tote water into the house to take their baths it was common for the fathers to take the bath first then the mother followed by the children meaning that the youngest child will be the last one to be days and by that time because everybody has used the water the water is now dark and murky it was just the sayings to the mothers to be weary to not throw out their youngest children with the bathwater.

To anyone confused, 'a stitch in time saves you nine' is referring to mending clothes. If you mend right after the tear happens the hole stays smaller. If you leave the hole be and postpone the mending, the tear will become larger and thus you need more stitches == more work to fix it.

I also wanted to add that I heard a slightly different origin to "Bless you." Supposedly when you sneezed, the people of that time believed that it became an entry point for demons and ill spirits. So someone needed to say, "Bless you" quickly to block any evil spirits from entering the body and soul.
@virginiaschofield2118
@virginiaschofield2118 8 ай бұрын
The "evil spirit (devil) entering your soul when you sneeze" is what I've always heard as well. The reasoning behind it was, when you sneeze, your heart supposedly stops beating during that one second (any medical people here to confirm or dismiss this theory?). This means you are technically "dead" for that second...giving the spirit the opportunity it needs to claim you for itself. Saying "Bless you" invokes God to intervene and keep Satan at bay. Whether all of this happens because of a sneeze is anyone's guess.

One I can think of with an odd origin is "To bat an eye", meaning to show surprise, fear or concern. It somewhat originates from a book about falconry written in 1614 by Simon Latham, as "batting" was the term he coined to describe a falcon rapidly fluttering it's wings when about to take off. So later in the 19th century, fluttering one's eyes was then described as "batting your eyelashes". Then there is the inverse of the phrase, "To not bat an eye", which is to show no reaction whatsoever.

Pig in a poke: At temporary farmers' markets (which most were in medieval times) local AND travelling merchants would put out their wares for sale. A less-than-honest merchant might sell you a piglet and put it in a bag (poke) for you to carry it more easily. If you are not watching, he might switch it for something of less consumer value, such as a cat, and you might not discover this until later when the merchant was LONG gone! Bless you! Was used when people used to think your soul left your body when you sneezed and needed to be prayed back in to save you.

I've never heard the pig in a poke one. The Bless you I heard the one you said, and also that your heart stopped for a second when you sneezed and that saying Bless you was a little prayer to keep it beating. I would guess that most American English users nowadays have never heard "poke" used as a bag, except for Tony Joe White's record "Poke Salad Annie," and still didn't know it was a bag! As for "Bless You," I imagine a great many people would just say to themselves "another Neanderthal religious freak!" But we DO need all the blessings we can get. Have a blessed day! @@PADS62

About oil changes for your vehicle: Today, most engine oils are either full synthetic, or a blend of synthetic/non-synthetic. They are designed to resist the acid build up infamous with previous generations of oil. If your car states to change your oil every 3,000 miles, one can safely wait until the 5,000 to 6,000 mile mark. (Heavy hauling/towing and mileage above 100,000 aside) Using BG MOA oil additive at every oil change can increase the wait time between changes a bit. I change mine every 7,000 miles or 4 months, whichever arrives first.

Sure would be interesting to know the origin of the phrases “Makes strange bedfellows” and “Throwing the baby out with the bath water!”
@user-vm5ud4xw6n
@user-vm5ud4xw6n 8 ай бұрын
I heard that “don’t throw the baby out with the bath water came from the Depression era. People would have big families and they didn’t bathe every day like we do. Saturday night was bath night. They had to either carry water from a creek and heat it up or use the hand pump to pump buckets of water to fill a metal tub. Dad bathed first. Then the next oldest child and so on down the line. If there were a lot of kids by the time the last one got to bathe the water was pretty dirty. Finally the baby got a bath and the expression was a reminder (probably with tongue in cheek) to search the nasty bath water and make sure the baby wasn’t still in it before you tossed the water!

You mentioned 1/2 a quote, "never buy a pig in a poke", the seller of the pig in a poke would swap the pig for a cat, "who let the cat out of the bag". Talking of cats, the phrase "Not enough room to swing a cat by its tail", has nothing to do with cruelty to cats, it's refers to a type of whip, a cat o' nine tail, used as punishment on ships.

@timvance836 exactly it goes back to the old horse drawn wagons day's where if the axle hubs weren't regularly greased they would start squeaking so that wheels axle would get the grease to lubricate and quiet the wheel. The axles and wheels at that time were all made of wood so protecting the axles from friction from the wheels rotary movement would keep the wagon rolling along properly. If the axle and wheel combination was allowed to go on squeaking and such for too long then it would be harder to fix possibly leading to replacement of both the wheel and the axle which was very labor intensive and costly.

"Dont let the cat out of the bag" has a similar origin from "dont buy a pig in a poke." Con men would sell a cat in a bag as if it were a pig. Opening the bag spoils the con.

I once used the comparison phrase around my lady friend that something was ..."HIGHER THAN A CAT'S BACK" and she asked me what that meant as she told me she had never heard that phrase before . I told her that it meant that something was expensive to buy . My aunt used to use that phrase many times over when I was a kid !

Thanks, your content is entertaining and informative, I always enjoy it, however I was 16:03 always taught that the sqeaky wheel would be on a horse or ox drawn wagon and the pig in a poke refers to the sale of a piglets. The animal is taken away and put in a sack for transporting, but when it is opened it is revealed that a cat has been substituted for the piglet, hence you have let the cat out of the bag.

I always thought that the term bless you when someone sneezed was because they thought the devil was trying to enter your body via the nose and teh saying 'Cat got you tongue' was from the navy where the 'cat of nine tails' was used as punishment and you would be unable to speak because of teh pain.

I got one quirky saying you didnt know existed here it goes: Hi, Phil Swift here with Flex Tape! The super-strong waterproof tape! That can instantly patch, bond, seal, and repair! Flex tape is no ordinary tape; its triple thick adhesive virtually welds itself to the surface, instantly stopping the toughest leaks. Leaky pipes can cause major damage, but Flex Tape grips on tight and bonds instantly! Plus, Flex Tape’s powerful adhesive is so strong, it even works underwater! Now you can repair leaks in pools and spas in water without draining them! Flex Tape is perfect for marine, campers and RVs! Flex Tape is super strong, and once it's on, it holds on tight! And for emergency auto repair, Flex Tape keeps its grip, even in the toughest conditions! Big storms can cause big damage, but Flex Tape comes super wide, so you can easily patch large holes. To show the power of Flex Tape, I sawed this boat in half! And repaired it with only Flex Tape! Not only does Flex Tape’s powerful adhesive hold the boat together, but it creates a super strong water tight seal, so the inside is completly dry! Yee-doggy! Just cut, peel, stick and seal! Imagine everything you can do with the power of Flex Tape!

@dsxa918 Hi it's Vince from shamwow, you'll be saying wow every time. It's like a shammy, it's like a towel, it's like a sponge. A regular towel doesn't work wet, this works wet or dry. This is for the house The Car The Boat The RV Shamwow holds 12 times it's weight in liquid, look at this, it just does the work. Why do you want to work twice as hard? It doesn't drip, doesn't make a mess, wring it out. You wash it in the washing machine. Made in Germany, you know the Germans always make good stuff. Here's some cola, wine, coffee, cola, pet stains. Not only is your damage going to be on top, there's your mildew. That is gonna smell, see that.
