My parents own a business, and had a new employee try to rob them. He gave some reason, why he had to leave early- then comes back to commit the robbery. What was really stupid: He had enough sense to cover his face, but came back wearing the same clothes he'd worked in all day- so they had no problem identifying him.

You missed on in the UK. A coupe of teenagers broke into a van expecting it to be full of tools but ended up with a surprise. It actually contained members of the SAS who were on surveillance training and they ran. The SAS members gave chase and after the criminals repeatedly 'Fell down' during the chase they were handed to the police.

@@michaelbujaki2462 oh, I don't know, the SAS and police had a _very_ lucky day! For those who don't know, the SAS is one of the world's most elite special forces. That's not jingoism on my part, they are widely known to be the last people you want coming after you. You might not hear about any of their actions, but that's because the majority of their work is kept absolutely secret. However, look up the storming of the Iranian embassy in London, 1979(? - close enough). It was the first (and maybe last) time that I know of where they were in action on TV. It was a resounding success, despite one of the embassy's guards, IIRC (it was a long time ago!), sadly losing his life. Had the SAS _not_ intervened, there's no doubt that the hostages would all have died. It didn't take them long, either, again IIRC.

In Augusta Ga a few years ago, a man broke into a convenience store which had closed for the night. There being no cash in the register after hours, he grabbed a bag of cheese puffs. The police followed a trail of cheese puffs and cheesy hand prints to his apartment building, floor, and door. He answered the door with the bag of puffs in his hand. Another man robbed a store with a knife, ran out the door and proceeded to stab the US Marine collecting for Toys for Tots. His buddies there for the same collection, took him in custody for the police. The newspaper account said that the crook sustained multiple bruises and broken bones "falling off a curb." I've been to that store. The curb varies from about two inches to level with the road.

if you want stupid. it happened in Brazil, a guy robbed a drug store, he got in and out without incident, but the idiot left his car running and unlocked, when he got out of the store his car was stolen, the guy then patting the air where his car was, (apparently he bought his car from a romulan,) then wile he was running around like an idiot someone ran by and snatched his loot, here is the best part the car thief and the snatcher were aware of the camera in front of the store and hid there faces so the original criminal is the only one going to jail.

I've got one to add to this. I know of a woman that was caught red handed stealing a 50 dollar bill out of a teachers purse at her kids elementary school. Not because there were camera's or anything. Oh no, the reason why is far dumber. In order to go through the teachers purse which was under her desk she had to put down a stack of paperwork and envelopes. (She was registering her youngest for Pre-K) When she grabbed the money she was either so excited or nervous about her ill gotten gains she turned on her heel and ran...leaving all of her paperwork on the desk...with her and her kids social security cards....a photocopy of her ID, proof of address...you name it; it was in that stack. She might as well have left a business card in it's place with a note on the back saying "My name is.....I stole 50 bucks from you at 3PM when I came to get my daughter." She was arrested and actually banned from the school...as a result she had to send her kids to a different district.
@nobodyspecial3123

Also I would really love to be able to say this woman had children in her teens I can't. She was easily in her mid to late 30's. I think about it and end up seriously embarrassed for her. Because any school district she moves to with her kids will be notified that she has stolen from teachers so she will never ever live that down.

Ya want stupid, here's stupid. Hired this guy the day before to work for our construction crew. The following day we stopped at a small restaurant to grab some lunch, we entered through the left side door of a set of glass double doors that had a large red sign on the right door that said,"door broken, please use other door" on the inside and out. On the way to our table I saw a large pickle jar being used for a tip jar for a family charity that was quite full and very heavy, I had to mess with it after I tossed in some change. After we had all sat down the new guy(who most of us known for years) kept eyeing that jar, he asked, "how much you reckon is in that jar?" We we're just throwing around some numbers but figured there was probably around $500-600 in there. I guess as seeing that we weren't far from his home, he turns to my dad and says, "I guess I'll be taking the rest of the day off", then that dumb-ass jumps up grabs the tip jar, tries AND succeeds in going through the locked glass door, shatters the door, shatters the tip jar, scatters money all over the parking lot, knocks himself out on the door's push bar that's on the outside of the door, and all of this right as an EMT unit and a NCHP unit pulled in. Karma baby, Karma.

A cop was in foot pursuit of someone escaping a scene. He followed him into some building and randomly said, "Marco...". The criminal responded "Polo" and sure enough was located. Another once robbed a jewelry store but forgot to pick up a folder he left which was a job application. He actually returned later to retrieve it and went inside to get it from the back room the clerks put in it. When he went inside, the clerks locked him in.

A friend of mine who is a state trooper in upstate NY got a call from his wife one day, saying that someone had stolen her car from work. As he's sitting in his patrol car talking to his wife, the idiot that stole her car blows by him doing about 90. He pulls the car over and the kid tries to say it was his aunt's car and she let him borrow it. He asks for the aunts name, which the kid reads off the registration. He let the kid go on for a while as other patrol cars were pulling up. He finally asks the kid to tell him the aunts name again, then asks him if the last name is spelled the same way as the last name on his name tag. He said the kid just about shit himself right there. Worst thing for the kid, he was already on probation at the time for an earlier car theft. Don't think he saw the outside of a jail cell for a while after that.

Some years back I was at a Kmart when this young man stole a car radio and ran out with it. A cop who just by chance happened to be in the store took out after him. The young man was fast and would have gotten away if he had not turned around to see how close the cop was. He ran right into a pine tree at full speed. He was knocked out cold. Well the EMT came and carried him off with a bloody face. Everyone was looking at the pine tree so I too went over to look. The pine tree had bark missing he had hit it so hard.

Back in the early 80's, I had a 1970 Buick Skylark. I had installed a custom mount in the dash for a cheap Citizen EQ along with the stereo. One morning as I was doing my morning ritual, I happened to look out the bathroom window to see speaker wires hanging out the back door of the car. I called the Police, and they asked me to see if anything was missing. I threw on some clothes and went to take a look, expecting to find the stereo gone. I took one look in the car, and ran right back up to call the Police back. The stereo was still there, but the EQ was 1/2 ripped out, and the thief was passed out in the back seat. The cops got there in about 5 minutes and arrested him. Stupider still was when I went to court to testify, the guy (acting as his own defense) asked me if I could prove it was my stereo and if I had the receipt. SMFH

I once heard a cop describing the dumbest criminal he ever arrested. The guy broke into a store through a skylight. He bagged his loot, but then couldn't reach the skylight to get out. So, he called 911. When asked why he was in the building, he explained that he was a burglar. When the police arrived, he was standing in front of a plate glass window. There were heavy objects in the store, but it never occurred to him to break the window. After the police got him in the back of the police car, they asked what he did for a living. He said, he was a burglar by profession. The cop told him to find a new profession. THAT is the dumbest criminal!

Near Atlanta, a man went in to rob a convenience store. There were customers so to pass the time, he filled out an employment application with his name and address. My father had a good one too: he worked at a construction site. One Saturday when they were closed, an employee wanted to use the front-end loader. He hit the propane tank sitting next to the office and the whole thing blew up. He jumped down and ran. Thinking he was dead, they held a funeral. Two weeks later, he called the office wanting to know if he could pick up his last check.

I remember hearing about an IDIOT who “robbed” a convenience store. Why is “robbed” in quotes? Because he walked in, laid a $20 bill on the counter and asked to break it. When the clerk opened the cash register, the “robber” held him up, taking the money in the cash register and leaving the $20 on the counter.. the total money in the cash register was $15, so the store clerk made a $5 profit.

That specific tank was in the bed of his pickup, leaving the gas gage on empty at all times, regardless of how full it is. Snowy night in a small town in Utah...a kid decided to break into the fire station and siphon gas out of the town fire truck...an antique. He couldn't see how much gas was in the gas tank, so he took out a lighter so he could see into the fuel tank...started a fire, couldn't put it out, panicked and ran straight home, climbing into his bedroom window and shutting it behind him. Police showed up, saw the only set of footprints in the snow, and followed them...went to the front door and knocked. His very displeased father brought him to the sheriff and he was arrested for arson.

Before the clerk could hand it over, the robber noticed two uniformed police officers drinking coffee at the counter 10 feet away. He turned and ran out the door. Reminds me of a story I heard about a group of hippies in the late 1960's in the hill country of Texas. They were driving a VW van erratically. There were two state policemen, one was a rookie being on-the-job trained and his veteran mentor. They spot the van and decide to pull it over. After getting everyone out of the van, the veteran policeman is talking to the driver of the van. The rookie is standing nearby when one of these hippies, stoned out of his mind, goes up to the rookie cop and hands him a small package of cocaine saying "Hey man, can you get rid of this for me?" Needless to say, he was hauled to jail.

A man in Cornwall Ontario robbed a Scotiabank. When the police arrived they picked up the ransom note to dust it for prints. No need, he had written the ransom note on the back of one of his personal cheques, with his name and account number on it. In Ottawa Ontario a few years ago, a young offender attacked one of my friends at gunpoint. My friend, who we will call Mack for privacy reasons, is well versed in firearms and so noticed that they barrel was plugged and that the safety was on. Mack then pulled the gun out of the kid's hand, pulled the clip, pinned him on the wall, and called the police. After calling the police he turned to the kid and said "Next time, bring bullets." The officer thanked Mack for stopping the kid, but warned that civilians should not try to apprehend armed robbers. At this point mack let the officer know that he was a lieutenant commander in the Royal Canadian Navy. Toronto Ontario, guy tries to rob a Tim Horton's, which is a popular Canadain doughnut shop. It is very popular with Police because on duty police officers get free coffee there. So when the guy pulled his gun out, 50 other officers pulled their guns out. Toronto Police, Ontario Provincial Police, RCMP, and a native detachment were all present. After a tense moment one of the officers asked "Who has jurisdiction?" OPP made the arrest. Kentucky USA, a would be load thief was following a truck for two hours. The trucker called for police because load theft is a big threat for truck drivers. When the police arrived on scene, the man took off down the shoulder, not suspicious in the slightest.

The police responding to the alarm were able to follow his foot prints in the snow and arrest him as he was hiding in some bushes trying to try open the (empty and for sale) cash register 2) Another guy had broken into the shop, disabled the alarm, and loaded a lot of the mechanic's tools into his car (where his girlfriend was passed out). His car wouldn't start so for some reason he sat down at the desk in the customer reception area and passed out too. He was still sitting there when my brother, Mike, showed up to open the shop. Being stoned, drunk, or both he begged my brother for a jump start before the guys got into work. Mike kicked his ass before calling the cops. Luckily we were on friendly terms with the police and they excepted the explanation that the guy fell down a few times because he's drunk.

Hi, Mike. There was a bank robbery in Portsmouth, VA in the 1970's. The masked robber was caught because he forgot to remove his mask when he crossed the parking lot to buy his girlfriend a Valentine's Day card and gift.

The dumbest thief I've ever heard of was a tie between the guy who decided to bring his dog to the robbery with him. The police caught him by telling the dog to go home and followed him. The other guy wrote a stickup note on his own paycheck stub. Right below where his name and address were printed.

TWO Stupid criminal robbery stories: One was in Clovis, New Mexico in the early 80's. An airman from the nearby Cannon, Air Force Base applied for a loan at a finance company in town while dressed in his uniform. About an hour later he came in wearing a mask and still in uniform (with his last name on his left breast per AF regulations) and robbed the office at gunpoint. He was arrested at the bases' front gate. The next one I heard about on a dumb criminal TV show: A man handed a robbery note written on a deposit slip to the teller. The teller somehow deducing the man wasn't very bright told him she couldn't accept the note because the deposit slip was from the band across the street and he'd have to go over there and rob that bank. He left and police were called. (I LOVE that one).

A guy I knew in high school robbed a pizza delivery guy with a bb gun. Cops followed his and his friends foot steps in the fresh snow directly to one of their houses. He brought the newspaper clipping to school to brag about his name being in the paper.

My cousin's partner is a police officer here in the UK. Just around the corner from our house, he pulled over a driver for driving dangerously. Turns out he'd been pulled over twice before for exactly the same thing & had 6-9 points on his license already! The guy has lost his license. Here in the UK, if you get 12 points on your license, you lose your license. Depending on the offences you incurred the points for, you have to take your driving test again to get your license back at the end of the suspension. This guy will have to take his test again when his suspension is over.

I once worked on a tour boat; several years before the boat was broken into, some of the gauges in the engine room were smashed, the ketchup and mustard from the concession stand/bar was squirted all over the first deck, windows were broken, etc.; the perps would have gotten away had they not also gone to one of the local hotels and trashed their room, where they were caught and police found several of the tour boat's seigneur t-shirts that had also been stolen. :D

A guy goes to rob a muffler shop and asks for the money the problem is that all the money was in a safe that only the manager had the combination to so he hands them his phone number and tells them to call when the manager comes in. They call the police who call the man pretending to be the manager and he gets arrested.

One of my former co-workers once told me about a group of thieves who decided to steal a bunch of fireworks from a warehouse around the 4th of July in order to resell them. Thing is these geniuses had the grand idea to use a blowtorch to break into the place. They are now known as the "Hole in the Ground Gang" by local law enforcement.

My little brother, actually. He burglarized an Autozone in a small town in Western Nebraska one night. Didn’t leave any finger prints, but he left lots of foot prints. In the snow. In both directions, starting at his apartment building two blocks down, and down the center of the street both coming and going. He was arrested within 20 minutes of making it back to his apartment. 🙄

A friend of mine I won't mention his name, is a County Sheriff pulled a guy over in a Santa suit over for drunk driving. Within 250 feet at the light, there was an accident, so he went to investigate. The drunk guy dot in the patrol car and drove home thinking he got away. He was obviously so drunk he didn't realize set the lights were still flashing on top of the patrol car, and needless to say he got a ride in that same car back to the sheriff's barracks. When asked about the flashing lights the drunk guy said "I thought they were Christmas lights" since it was Christmas eve after all.

I was at a truck stop in Bakersfield CA. I saw a man park his car carefully out of sight, walked in, and acted like he was going to buy something. He handed the clerk a 20.00 bill, and when the clerk opened the till, he punched her and took all the cash from the till, then ran out and drove away. The sherriff asked if she had been robbed. She said she wasn't sure, the guy dropped a 20 and she had just done a cash advance for a driver, leaving her with 12.00 in the till ... he only got 10.00 because he missed taking the pair of one dollar bills. He was arrested for assault, but not theft, since he left more than he took.

In Ypsilanti, MI. I drove by a bank that had recently been robbed, I found a a bit later the robber had been caught... his escape, the local bus. He was seen getting on just outside of the bank. All the police had to do was check what bus was there, the route and he was arrested on the bus a little while later.

What about the guy who had a wife that kept running off with truckers.(They owned a resteraunt). When she got tired of them she would come back home. He always took her back, they had 2 kids that needed a mom and he loved her. He finally got tired of this and killed her. Told everyone she had left but would be back. She never retuned and he ended raising the kids alone. 10 - 12 years later he walked into the local police station and confessed to killing her. Turns out he had ground up her body and added it to the hamburger that was used in the resteraunt. He had totaly gotten away with murder. He had NEVER been a suspect in her disappearance. Everyone figured she had found true love with the guy she ran away with. Another Reader's Digest story.
