Hats off to that pilot. Made it look so good but I'm sure it was anything but easy.

I spoke with an elderly gentlemen who piloted a sea stallion across open water when the drive shaft to the tail rotor snapped. The ship started to yaw badly. He dropped collective and pushed cyclic forward into a dive to gain forward speed. Leveling out and feeding in power/collective while maintaining maximum speed with power beyond rated, he found he could keep the yawing to a minimum because the vertical part of the tail was weathervaning. He flew this way for quite a distance. When he came over the field in England he performed a autorotation. It wasn’t pretty but no other damage except scuffed landing gear.

Next time I go up with an instructor, I'm going to practice the following technique. When stuck in the too-much-antitorque position (with the CFI holding down that pedal to simulate), as in the incident shown, bring the helicopter near the ground, and begin to close the throttle slowly, while raising the collective a bit to compensate. The resulting increased drag on the main-rotor blades should rise to compensate for the over-correction of the tail rotor.

Let us know how it goes Sam!

@@HelicopterGround Wilco, Kenny. I forgot to mention one other thing. While you are reducing RPM and increasing drag on the main-rotor blades, in the technique I outlined, tail-rotor thrust is also being reduced. So drag on the main rotor is coming up to meet the excess anti-torque thrust; simultaneously, that excess thrust from the tail rotor is coming down. When everything matches, set 'er down normally.

I've been wondering if a right cross wind would help with this one?

Nothing in Robby's book about stuck pedal. So maybe its understandable that when I was asked about it on my first job interview (to fly an R44) I gave him that "deer in the headlights" stare. Of course right after that interview I went home and memorized the Rotorcraft Flying Handbook's procedure for stuck pedal,...and of course, in the thirteen years since that interview no one else has ever asked me to explain stuck pedal! ,...yep 😕

My instructors here gave me many a stuck pedal in Robinsons, and I mean they'd jam the pedal all the way to the floor. Hardest part was the approach and setup. Bled off speed while rolling off the throttle and the thing settled nicer than half of my hovering autos. But man the approaches were a real knuckle whitener. But you know, if I didn't like it and wasn't comfortable setting it down it was no big deal circling around and setting up for it again.

Exactly right, as long as you have fuel you can go around as many times as needed!

Which one is worst stuck right or left?
@HelicopterGround3 ай бұрын
Could be either depending on which aircraft and current conditions.

What does the pedal do?

You did not tell us non pilot viewers what a stuck pedal is!!!??? I thought the pedals made it go in circles or i should say stop it from spinning? The one on the video wasnt spinning????
@HelicopterGround5 жыл бұрын
In forward flight the streamlining of the fuselage keeps it from spinning. As you start to slow down is when the spin will start. Thanks for your question.

@@HelicopterGround thanks! I understand now! Thats why in the video the pilot kept the helicopter sideways.i can guess now that depending on which pedal is stuck you fly sideways to your right or left.wait, not really because after 180° "yaw" spin no matter if you go L or R it will stop. anyway!!?? Sir, thank you for your great channel! I been learning so much with you about helicopters.i was thinking of taking ground online course with MZEROA but after watching you im leaning more towards helicopters with HOGS.. Which would cost less to complete fixed wing or heli??? Is it the same after GS..40 hrs..cross country..solo..etc??? MZEROA GS ONLINE IS $300.. HOW MUCH IS HOGS?? THANK YOU SIR!!!

Carlos helicopters are definitely more expensive! Go with what's in your heart between fixed wing or helicopter. We have several pricing options depending on what a person wants to do at www.HelicopterGround.com
