All these years later and I totally understand this sentiment. Minor social faux pas and having to deal with rude dickheads is infinitely exhausting and a 100% lose lose. Either they piss you off and leave you feeling that way or you tell them off and then get to feel guilty and embarassed for making a scene of it. Violence is easy. You either run from it and everyone totally understands and respects your now free escape from dealing with this individual or you win the fight and get to knock some sense into a moron. Even if they win the fight, as long as they instigate you can either win in civil court or you get stabbed and get to escape dealing with them being annoying via ambulance trip. Violence is fast and resolves the problem one way or another, but trying to calmly and rationally escape while remaining socially polite is long and tedious and doesn’t work on socially inept toolboxes looking to waste your life.

I find that when people get in your face about shit, its because they are under the impression that you will not stand up to them. In almost EVERY scenario I've had where someone got in my face about shit (up to and including possible gang members) if you just stay calm and say "if you want this to be a problem, I can make it a problem.
