Annoying when one is in ketosis and the weight doesn't move downward. Thank you for the info.

Personally, I do best physically and mentally when I keep the carbs down around 20gms a day. I am relatively sedentary due to chronic pulmonary disease, but I have lost a significant amount of weight and I feel better over all. (65# worth). I let myself be stable for a year at that weight, and have started again to measure my foods, carbs and keep my calories 1500 or so and making sure my body is in ketosis. I have started to lose weight again, and my goal is another 40#. I'd ask for a video regarding the stabilization of weight after a major loss and how that is done. Btw, my A1C went from 6.8 down to 5.1 and has stayed down. The rest of my labs look great.

I appreciate all of the information, however, you should also address the need to do weight training along with a low carb diet. As we age we lose muscle and this also contributes to more fat storage with raises insulin and causes less metabolic flexibility. Muscle loss is one of the most damaging effect of aging. You are both very fit and have the perfect name for your channel.

@Fativore Lifestyle How old are your clients? Most people do not adhere to a carnivore or ketosis lifestyle especially in the older population of adults past 50. Osteo arthritis and osteopenia are more prevalent with age. The loss of bone density is due to loss of hormones. I suggest you read this study. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1308846/

Fativore: YOU are very shortsighted. Muscle strength is VITAL to staying independent as you age. When you don't exercise, your muscles atrophy. Use it or lose it. Muscle strength protects you from serious falls and keeps you able to perform activities of daily living like shopping & cooking. BOTH exercise AND avoiding processed food (sugar, transfats, etc.) are important to health.

I know that I get into ketosis and I have never measured ketones. I can now tell when that metabolic switch takes place after doing this so often. My first obvious physical sign that I was in ketosis was serious acetone breath. I would look for that a certain amount of time into my fast. That’s another thing, if you’re doing intermittent fasting as well, ketosis is built in as long as your carbs are in the ketogenic range, because your body will have no choice but to go into ketosis, as it’s impossible to screw that up if you’re not eating. If I wasn’t fasting, I would be a lot more concerned with measuring ketones. But now that I’ve developed my system, I really don’t see where it’s necessary. The most obvious sign is that I’m burning tons of body fat, which doesn’t happen unless I’m in ketosis.

Been living with ME/CFS since 2010 and ketosis has transformed my life from being constantly crushed by fatigue to actually being able to not only function but there is also very much less “payback” from energy expenditure, meaning I can get more from day to day life. Sometimes I even forget I have ME/CFS until I drop out of ketosis and then the issues flood back again. But still, an absolute game changer for me and wish I’d discovered it years ago.

Carolina Beth - a chronic illness generally exhibiting 24/7 debilitating fatigue and a host of other unpleasant symptoms. Most people never fully recover and if they do it can take many many years. Expending any energy makes symptoms worse. Seems the body cannot create enough energy to sustain itself, but, for me, ketosis seems to bypass that energy failure and provide a source my body can use.

I have the same Insulin struggles as Dr. Keith. The one thing I did that helped me dial in the Keto diet was to track my blood sugar and ketones along with weighing myself. By charting these numbers, I am able to quantify the results of my diet. For example, I know if I have a few beers and pizza that I will gain 4 pounds within 48-hours. I have monitored this enough times to literally know the net effect of this behavior before I do it. I also know that it will take me 72-hours of Intermittent Fasting and strict Keto diet just to get my blood sugar and ketones back to normal. It takes a week just to get my weight back to set point. Armed with this knowledge, it is much easier to avoid the temptation of alcohol and carbs...even when there is a great game on TV😉

Alternate day fasting with a true 24-hour fast with only black coffee and matcha green tea during the fast. I finally was able to get my blood sugar in the 70’s and ketones in the 1.8-2.2 range. The fat loss results have been great AND my energy and mental clarity is so much better. I don't understand. I am 65, a female, raising a 5 year old, a farmer (small) with a small Ebay business. I don't have time for "exercise". I am 53 days in and have only lost 11 pounds. In the last week, with no change in my keto diet (hardly ever snack-like fat bombs etc. ), in which I am strict, and my ketones are now below .5 (.3) every morning and my glucose has crept up over 100, four out of the last 5 days. I am 5'2" and weigh 194. What I basically eat is beef, avocados, asparagus, hard boiled yolks, bacon (not a bunch), buttered coffee, cheese, and ocassionally, arugula. I am great on my carbs-@ 4% and protein 17%. I am moving towards carnivore to see if I can get the scale to move. But I just don't get it. I go long stretches-7-10 days without a loss at all. We are Urban Farmers and I have to be ready for this next season as I get older. I feel better-absolutely. But it is depressing.

If you lost 11 lb in less than 2 months the diet is working .A weight loss of 4 pounds a month is great. 100 isn’t bad for AM blood sugar . I wish I had 100 blood sugar . Stay with keto and 2 meals a day within 8 hour window and your body will be what it needs to be .I’m sure with time weight will drift down .Congratulations on losing 11 pounds . If you do farm work I’m sure you are Exercising. Every day your body is adapting to fat burning mode and you are producing less excess insulin. You only need about 8 oz of animal protein . you can add fat to replace some protein calories using coconut oil . ACTUALLY I SHOULD BE ASKING YOU FOR ADVICE!!! BECAUSE I HAVE DONE KETO SINCE EARLY DEC AND MY WAISTLINE HASNT CHANGED MUCH AT ALL BUT MY BLOOD SUGARS ARE MUCH BETTER !I have been diabetic for 11 years but don’t need insulin and I think the doctor will say I’ve improved when I see him in May . YOU ARE DOING MUCH BETTER THAN YOU THINK ! 100 is a great blood sugar number .I don’t think it is even pre diabetes . Great time to check fasting sugar is afternoon before dinner after you haven’t eaten for several hours .Bet you’d get 80 or even 70.

When I said 8 oz animal protein I meant per day not per meal .Sorry I wasn’t clear Plant proteins are good add ones because they have fiber . Hemp protein with fiber is good just be sure you don’t get one with a flavor added. Hemp protein has a nutty taste .I’m guessing you probably have a garden. You can never eat too much bunny food like leafy green vegetables . I’m glad I was able to catch and correct my boo boo. You had said something about carnivore . But I don’t thinks humans could function that way.

0:30 "A low carb diet is considered 125g-50g" unless you ask the U.S. Government, which is likely now going to classify it at < 45% of your caloric intake. You should note that this is Total Carbs for people who use Net Carb calculations. I think that the Total Carb calculation also needs to include any alcohol as well, since most ketogenic diet studies seem to set alcohol intake at zero.

I’m doing keto. 2 meals daily and trying to stay in an 8 hour window. I have to keep my metformin doses far enough apart . Doing all your eating in 4 hour window may be trying too hard . you re fasting if you eat in 8 hour window and if you eat only 2 meals there is a rest between breakfast and dinner -no lunch or snacks . I take green tea and GTF chromium cinnamon and also Omega 3 fish oil and several other supplements . I take magnesium and resveratrol . I doubt I’d do well if i ate in 4 hour window. .Someday, I hope to do short fasts where i would only eat breakfast and miss dinner maybe 1 or 2 times a week .but that would be a last resort for weight loss .but I’ve heard that periodic fasting makes a person able to have holidays and eat treat food like holiday sweets and not regain. Like fasting before a special event and then continuing keto up to it to maintain if metabolism is stable . I’m not there I have diabetes but I have improved on keto. IF you eat 2 meals 5 or 6 hours apart and include plenty of fat and fiber it should help. You can eat high fat ground beef and other fatty meats try to choose organic if you can. MCT oil is a good way to add fat if the meat is lean I take MCT oil like a supplement taking 1 or 2 tablespoons measuring it with a tablespoon measure and just taking it off the spoon. With a meal. It is good to eat wild caught salmon and or sardines and on days no fish is consumed to take fish oil Life Extension is a good brand also Nordic naturals . If you have only done keto for a while, you may not be ready for 4 hour window . I never plan to do a 4 hour window but I may if I have to resort to a 22 hour fast once a week if I absolutely had to in order to get the sugar down. It is OK to get a life. You should be filled up and satisfied not always hungry .An 8 or 9 hour window with 2 meals rich in fat and plenty of vegetables at each meal can stay with you. I never thought I could give up lunch but it worked.What I call breakfast should be a meal more like a dinner with a serving of meat and a lot of raw vegetables . I also eat pumpkin seeds and nuts . a good multi vitamin helps such as Daily Complete which is a bio available liquid .It has a lot of nutrients . Drugstore vitamins are worthless . Daily complete isn’t sold in stores . Produced by Pure trim . Life extension is also good .They have Life extension mix Daily Complete is less expensive . Both my sister and I take it . You are probably not fitting in enough calories in a 4 hour window . If you eat 2 meals daily on KETO your body will tell you when you’ve had enough and you will be satisfied . It took experience to teach me that I WAS A SCEPTIC!!!

Interested in your opinion on negative effects of ketosis causing gout, arthritis flare ups, etc. when in ketosis, uric acid forms causing those effects. It happened to me. What do you recommend to offset those negative effects?
@takeoffyourblinkers5 жыл бұрын
i am pretty sure you would want to add some extra info there, not much to go on. When did it happen? Like how far into it. Stress levels etc. Gout is more to do with kidney function, I believe. From my own experience, I find adding potassium citrate or even cream of tartar seems to keep it at bay. Of course i could be wrong, I also take allopurinal once a day because I started on that before I went to a lower carb way of eating. I am scared to go ff it because i don't ever want to get another attack, like i did the last time, which was my first, after having high uric acid for 30 years...

Dr. Keith - I have heard you mention "inflammation markers" a few times. Could you tell me what these markers are called in your bloodwork? Did you have to test specifically for them? I have about 3 years worth of bloodwork and feel that inflammation in my knees (and sometimes feet) is increasing, though I have lost about 15 lbs. Working on losing 5-10 more with a combination of keto/low carb and IF. Would love to wake up pain free! I have had x-rays on my knees about 5 yrs ago which showed signs of cartilage loss, but my GP did not see any signs of "arthritis" in my recent bloodwork. TIA
@mathfaster5 жыл бұрын
The most common inflammation marker is hsCrp - highly sensitive C reactive protein. Don't exercise the day before you do blood work as exercise will slightly raise inflammation. < .5 is a good value for hsCrp.

I try not to go over 100 grams a day but some days I will be under 20 and I'm losing weight on average a couple of kg every week, worst week I lose about half a kg but never starving. If you're hungry you just eat, I even eat brown bread every day but not much like what more could you ask for. For people with issues such as blood sugar, high blood pressure etc. it's best to do healthy low carb or healthy keto, do not stuff yourself with bacon and full fat cheese thinking you're being healthy while loosing weight, it's not true, yes you will be loosing weight but it's not healthy if you're cutting out essential nutrients.

Jerry Dimond BINGO!! The definition of what you are doing, to me, is called healthy living! I do the same. Plus get exercise every single day. Barring any medical issues, I truly believe that by just following a healthy, relatively low carb lifestyle ( I refuse to say “ diet”!), giving your body time to not constantly be digesting food ( which by definition is intermittent fasting) and moving ( do whatever you want, just MOVE), then your body will naturally set itself where it’s supposed to be. I’m 62, about 5 lbs heavier than I was 20 yrs ago and it takes more effort than it did back then. But at least I can honestly say to myself that I can’t safely or reasonably do anything more.

As an exercise physiologist I will say this based on 27 years of experience. IF you include a properly designed exercise program that fits YOU, then ketosis is absolutely NOT necessary. As long as you cut out the sugars and white carbohydrates, refrain from eating foods that cause a spike in blood sugars (anything higher than 140 for more than one hour) and DON'T eat like a glutten then you will do fine. Everyone is different, but if you tend to lay around all day and don't use muscle glycogen by working out, then go for it. Try your best to follow a strict ketogenic diet and to that I say good luck because 99% of all my clients have NEVER maintained a ketogenic diet long term. Why? Because they want to participate in birthday parties, go on outings with friends, and whatever other reasons that might cause them to fall off the bandwagon! If you want ketones for the benefits, just down you some C8 on a daily basis from BioTrust - simple! Lastly, cancer can feed off anything you eat whether you are in ketosis or not! How? Because of a process called gluconeogenesis! There are many cells in your body that primarily uses glucose for fuel and if cancer needs glucose it will get it one way or another. It can also use glutamine from muscle - hence the reason why a person can STOP eating, but yet the cancer spreads like wildfire because it will feed off of muscle - hence the reason why a person with cancer is skin and bones at death! If you want to fight and possibly even beat cancer, research photoimmunotherapy. If you want to prevent cancer then you can do things like low level red light therapy, far infrared sauna, among other things to rid your body of heavy metals, EWOT to introduce more oxygen to the mitochondria and boost it's function, and BOOSTING the immune system by eliminating sugars as sugars decrease immune function and increase inflammation. So, you don't eliminate sugar because it feeds the cancer so to speak - although it does, but the primary reason is because it decreases immune function because as I stated above, cancer will feed off anything you put or NOT put in your mouth! Much more to this....

Just remember that it really doesn’t matter what you are eating because you will lose weight if you are in a calorie deficit. I follow a girl who has lost 120 pounds and has kept it off for years by just counting calories!!! Louise journey xo

The question is: how dangerous is ketosis? If you are real educated doctors you can see the parallels to Glycogen storage disease type 0, where lack of glycogen in muscles etc leads to eg heart arrythmia. And also excess fats can lead to lipotoxicity and damage again the heart, our arteries, kidneys and so on. It beats me how reckless or uneducated certain health "experts" are.
