YESS. I have done...... DNF... the dragons back and will be back. Yes its expensive and you have covered quite alot of it. However, nobody is doing this race if they don't have most the kit anyways as they'll no doubt done other ultras. Hats off to anyone who hasn't done anything and giving it a go.

This is what people need to see! Great video Lee! I've done this evaluation many times and cost is the main reason I've not yet entered. To be fair to the organisers at least they give decent examples of each piece of expected kit. However that's a punchy race cost! At least you'll have the kit for any other race ever again!

good video - I did the last race last year, already had most of the kit from other ultras mandatory kit lists (lot of overlap), then borrowed camping stuff. Had to buy the dry bags, bivvy bag and blister kit, but best advice I can say is focus on avoiding getting through each day and avoid the DNF, that is a cost that would hurt the most!

Thanks for the comment mate, yes lady luck will have a huge part to play. I will arrive for and ready but nobody can prepare for a misstep really. So injury can come at any time. I'm sure though I can pick up some bargains from previous dragons selling it. On that note, is your sleeping bag etc for sale ? Serious question 😁

@@leerunsultras I have two young sons and often camp with them under a tarp - think my sleeping bag was £15 new - also after dragons back I'm not sure it will ever smell right again (8 men in a damp tent on a bean heavy diet 🤢). higear divine from millets (£15) and a proper pillow would be worth the weight - anything to help get better sleep. The kit recommendations they have are pretty good, I picked up the salomon long sleeve hooded top and it has become a favourite for cold runs in dry weather and just wearing casually. If I was doing it again I would get some shoe ninjas or similar to dry shoes out (and something to put them in to keep dry as they have to be left outside), and just take two pairs of trainers but extra socks (and powder or similar to dry the feet at checkpoints) you already know look after your feet and the rest is easy.

These races are a once in a lifetime experience type thing but they are pricey. It's one of the reasons that lots of people who want to do them volunteer at the event before they take part themselves. They get a feel for the event and race credit towards their own entry.

That is one hell of a price.. very suprised it is like doing one of the road majors abroad ( and you do not even get hotels or flights) , however you will likely be able to get cheaper alternatives to the reccomended kit at a better price (nothing again Montane at all , I actually have that jacket which I got as a gift) .. but I would look into our far eastern cousins products and as you said visit decathalon. The cost is likely to be down to the health and saftey requirements ( choppers on standbye etc) . unless you get sauna's jacuzzi's and massusues at each aid station. On the shoe front I would check NNormal's offerings .. Killian (one of the few pro's I follow on Strava) is always out in the Tomir in all sorts of weather

I feel your pain, I've done the Montane Spine race and the entry fee was nothing to how much I had to shell out for kit alone! No ifs or buts when they are checking your kit, on 2 occasions I had full kit checks. Luckily everything on the required list was in my pack. I witnessed people fail with substandard sleeping bags and stoves. ( The must common reasons for mandatory kit check failure) They must return with the correct kit or fail to make the start line. I probably spent upwards of £5000 .

Bags and a couple of minor bits aside I had most already. I managed to find extra synthetic top on vinted which saved a fair amount of money £20 vs £140

@leerunsultras food, there's places you can to up (coop on day 3 for example). For camp you can always slip out your insoles and walk around. The bag weight does become a concern when packing!

I’m mega jealous you’re doing this race, I’ve been interested for a few years now but the cost really does stop me… if I was going to spend that much I think I’d rather do a UTMB somewhere in France.
