Lol. It's funny that you acknowledge that real rappers SHOULD write their own bars, which you're right about, and you're reacting to Blackpink who basically write not one word of their music. As do 95% of the fast talkers you'll meet if you keep reacting to k-pop. That's why BTS are so unique in that industry; because from day 1 they were always encouraged to write their own stuff, and their own stories. RM has an IQ of 148, a lyrical GENIUS, and Suga writes and produces all of his own stuff. J-Hope does a lot of that too. And while it's true that BTS' sound has changed since debut, the rappers' solo stuff still don't have filters. They say what they want to; it's just that they've let go of a lot of anger they had back then, so their content isn't as visceral.

Yes the word play is insane from RM. He knows how to play with lyrics in multiple languages to get the right flow and meaning that he wants. Being vulgar doesn't make something "real" and plenty of pop songs have swearing it. As others have pointed out the group has over 500 songs and they don't shy away from saying what they want to say, even to this day. They are clever and sneaky with their wordplay and using slang to get around censors etc. Just learning the Korean language isn't enough as there are insane amount of understanding of cultural context, slang and history that is required to really deep dive into their work. A lot of the lyric videos we don't trust as they don't take a lot of these contexts in place and sometimes have 'mistranslations'. Doolset Bangtan is a website we love with lyric translations that includes a lot of annotations and explanations. Wait until you find out what he did in the song Trivia: Love.

RM wrote and produced this around 2015, when he released his mixtape as a clapback for people saying he doesn't rap fast as if rapping fast is the measure of being a rapper and a good one. He said this was written using stream of consciousness style of writing. He showed he could rap good and beat those others rappers (kpop idol rappers which he was often compared to esp in earlier days) even when using "nonsense" lyrics and saying it as joke. The rapline are edgier when they do their solo stuff. As a group, they have more wholesome vibe. May I suggest watching explanation vids of Bookish theories and DKDKTV to explain some content esp the Korean culture that is often in the group's lyrics.. RM is called the philosopher who raps in SK. If you can deep dive into their songs, they have philosophical, literary and cultural references in there. I suggest Blood, Sweat and Tears and Black Swan for their mid to later projects. If you wanna view their debut stuff, I suggest N.O., Danger, War of Hormones, No More Dreams, Look Here Borahae 💜

I don’t know why you guys think BTS doesn’t curse anymore since they “went mainstream”. You only watched ONE group song from like 5 years ago. They have always cursed whenever they felt it was necessary, and they continue to do it regardless of how big they have gotten. Their songs are not PG nor are they like silly love songs with no meaning. A few recently released songs of the top of my head that have curse words: All Day (RM) Yun (RM) Set me free pt. 2 (Jimin) HUH?! (Suga and J-Hope) Arson (J-Hope) UGH (BTS rap line) Born singer (BTS) This song is basically a “joke”, hence the tittle, this song was RM responding to haters saying that he had no flow, couldn’t do fast rap and was not real hiphop since he chose to become an idol. RM is basically showing that you can have the best flow, and the fastest rap, but without meaningful lyrics it’s nothing but a joke. RM is the main song writers of BTS, so he cares A LOT abt lyrics and meaning, even if it may not seem like it, the lyrics of Boy With Luv are much deeper than you think and his rap in it is insanely creative and smart, I recommend checking out explanation videos and search for the song on Doolset to understand the song better. I also thought it was funny how you say that to be a rapper you need to write your own lyrics, which is something that BTS have always stood by, against the majority of K-pop, including the group you have reacted to quite a few times and said you thought were “more hiphop than BTS” a couple of reactions ago, for the most part they do not write their own verses.

@@selena95alfaro I agree they are learning, which is why I put a lot of information in my comments of things they probably don’t know abt. I wasn’t trying to be rude, I didn’t name call anyone. But respectfully, you are wrong, BTS does not care or need to cater to the kpop industry. They have grown bigger than the entire industry, they do not need to be in kpop shows to sustain themselves. They literally performed a protest song on national television (in a kpop show) in the middle of political chaos in SK in 2017 when they were gaining massive popularity, specially in the US following their win at the BBMA and their performance at the AMA. That does not align with what “kpop” music is supposed to be, specially in such a conservative country like SK. In the same year RM released Change with Wale. Against the idol K-pop standards suga smoked a cigarette in his latest videos after other members had been “caught” by stalkers smoking as fully grown men, he also makes criticism towards the capitalist system that enslaves us. They are not “clean” music just because they are popular/mainstream. They talk abt whatever they want and however they want. Regardless if it fits the kpop idol standards or even if it’s politically charged.

RM's debut name is Rapmonster. Around 2017 he decided to change it because his musicality spectrum was growing and he felt the name was limiting. His second mixtape is full of calmer melodic type rapping. Because RM's lyrics discuss so much of his journey to loving and excepting himself he gave a different explanation for his name. He said that RM didn't stand for anything specific, but kind of questioningly, he stated RM stands for Real Me. BTS started as a hip-hop group, but they were trained in a similar manner to idol groups (typical boy or girl bubblegum pop artists/performers). Rap is incorporated into a lot of Idol groups, many rappers from these groups do not write their own lyrics, and in my opinion very few of them are actually good. BTS rappers are some of the best from SK, and better than a lot of current rappers from the US. But because of their "idol rapper" status they are rarely recognized as actual rappers. So much so that Agust D, the most successful SK rapper, by way of album sales and tour revenue, wasn't nominated for a single Korean Hip-Hop award this year. He also wasn't nominated in any US rap categories despite having the highest rated rap album.

BTS contains 3 rappers who just happen to be part of an idol group, whereas other idol groups contain members who rap. A distinct difference. Don't expect to hear 5 tracks like Joke. BTS, whether as a group or solo, NEVER make the same song twice. It is that variety and the ability to surprise us every time that makes their fanbase in the multi millions worldwide. Note the rappers worked on these solos at the same time as working in BTS. They have artistic freedom to do this while being in the group. A LOT of work! Try his solo track MONSTER. It is more hip hop.💜

So RM actually started in the underground rap scene from the time he was a young teenager where people didn't want to battle him because he's just that good. Suga was also part of the underground rap scene when he was younger as well. J-hope who is the 3rd member of the rap line actually never rapped before becoming a trainee. He taught himself how to rap with help from RM and Suga. This song, Joke, like others have said is RM's respinse to people hating on him for being in an idol group saying he was a sellout and he can't rap. Because in thwir minds if you can't rap fast your not a good rapper. RM responded basically being like i can rap fast but rapping fast and using mumble rap or nonsensical words to fill your bars doesn't make it a good rap. Rm is extremely intelligent and chooses his words wisely when composing. He uses a lot of metaphor and double meanings in his lyrics so some of their other music which seems lighter or more pop isn't always the case. The way I've described the rap line is RM is very cerebral in his lyrics. Hes going to make you think and really look at the meaning of his words. Suga also does this but hes also very direct in your face. He doesn't mince words. If hes insulting you, you're going to know and feel the disrespect. J-hope is more lyrical I wanna say. You can feel the movement in his lyrics because he's a dancer and also a sub vocalist. Not to say he doesn't go hard because he does but there is a more distinct rhythmic feel to his flow.

I have MAD respect for Kim Namjoon (RM). He excels in language skills and it shows in both his eloquent public speaking (in Korean, English and Japanese) and his complex, poetic lyrics. He could have easily launched a full solo career at any point from the very start, and even had it offered to him on candid-camera but he declined without hesitation. He is highly intelligent both intellectually and emotionally. Most non-ARMY (fan base) people have NO idea how much nastiness and sheer hate this group has endured from its very beginning when they were still teenagers (oldest was 20) or from how many different fronts. RM and Suga’s underground rap peers turned against them accusing them of “selling out”. From the “idol” (K-pop group member) standpoint, they got hate for “controversial” song themes and/or lyrics and for being “ugly” and not “meeting idol standards”, to the point RM routinely wore dark sunglasses that hid his eyes and J-Hope wore accessories that covered part of his face during their debut photo shoots & MVs. As the leader and only fluent English speaker, RM took on the brunt of navigating the usually condescending, dismissive, culturally-insensitive and often blatantly disrespectful/hateful comments in interviews and other settings and strived to shield the other members from as much of it as he could. Still, on their first world tour they had to cancel a concert in NY halfway due to a credible 💀 threat against RM. As teammates the experience made them bond more tightly and become very supportive and protective of each other. They channeled their thoughts and feelings into their songs, pushing back against the haters on several BTS tracks. The rappers vented their anger more forcefully in solo mixtapes with aggressive songs like this one. The numbers 6 and/or 7 on their solo works usually refer to the other members or to BTS as a whole. The “six bullets/six snakes” line means his six fellow group members make him stronger as an artist/rapper, not weaker. After a long journey of seeking self-love and healing which they took fans on, they have largely purged that anger and aggressiveness and evolved their sounds and themes accordingly. The rapline songs Ddaeng and Ugh! are less 🤬 but still very much savage. I recommend checking out an “explained by a Korean” video after each one to catch the really deep and juicy wordplay.

I’m sorry- swearing isn’t what makes rap « rap. » that’s a pretty limiting view. Rap doesn’t become « pop » if they don’t swear. But at least you recognize that if you aren’t writing your own flows you’re a performer, not a rapper.

It just shows how lame rap music has become and how it’s dumbed down its listeners. Every other word in songs now is a curse word and it doesn’t even mean anything. There were several rappers in the very beginning of hip hop that didn’t curse but that didn’t make them any less of a rapper. This is why it’s better to just do research instead of going off of assumptions😅

I dont need or expect swearing in every “rap song”. But everyone has there own opinion 🤘🏽🤘🏽👍🏽👍🏽

@@jerseygirl6221 - exactly! Modern hip hop in the West has descended into a mess of cursing, misogyny, and the glorification of drugs & violence. And to make it even worse, the vocal delivery, lyrics & music are boring & lacking in any creativity. SUGA even dropped his 1st full album last year and he added a diss track with a drill beat called "HUH?!". Songs like Joke aren't as common anymore but every once in a while they drop some hard bars
@sandydebord815310 ай бұрын
Why, why, why do you keep saying that they no longer use “vulgar” language and why do words have to be categorized like that. Words just convey thoughts and emotions in my opinion. Anyway, you’ve heard so little from them. They have almost 500 total tracks/songs when including pre-debut, group, sub-unit & solos, Japanese songs, remixes & alternate versions, OSTs and collaborations. Each of the members has released a solo album during the past year and a half and 5 of the 7 cuss, some significantly, in their new stuff. Have they matured over the years? Yes, of course! They are human beings, so what they sing and rap about has changed some, but not completely. For instance, SUGA aka Agust D still criticizes how society works on many different levels. They all tend to have some social commentary in their work both individually and as a group. Btw, Agust D’s album, D-Day, was the first rap album EVER…ANYWHERE to sell a million copies on the day of release. All of this to say, do away with the western misconceptions and thought processes (and I’m American too). Just because we did something first back in the 1970’s (I was there memorizing the lyrics to Sugar Hill Gang’s Rappers Delight) doesn’t mean other people all around the world aren’t doing the same things 50 years later. I apologize if this comes across negative. Obviously, I like that you’re giving something new to you a chance, so I truly just want to help you along. I just beg you to not make statements that are not based on any solid information or facts. We, ARMY, will happily guide you on your BTS journey if you choose to jump down the rabbit hole. Finally, as others have suggested, watch The Guide to BTS Members; The Bangtan 7 by Taylor Mari. Watch it all in one go if possible; you’ll capture more of us that way. Oh, one more thing. The name Bangtan Sonyeondan was decided upon in 2010 I believe. That’s 3 years before they debuted. Their CEO wanted to create a group with artistic freedom, freedom they still enjoy today. He also wanted a group that the youth of their generation could look up to and they have certainly been that. Borahae 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

This is very good comment, but I would recommend the Rice Squad's intro video instead (The Most Beautiful Life Goes On 2022 update). Because of what Taylor included (like the clip from American Hustle Life where the tickets already were all already allocated) and the way some of the member intro's are structured, I've seen way too many reactors and new ARMY come with the preconceived information about some members that are not right. Taylor did a lot of work and did take a lot of feedback but there are still some flaws to that video. We also know now with Beyond the Stars, the book and some more information that a lot of these intro videos are now wrong. As always trust in the members words themselves first 💜
@sandydebord81539 ай бұрын
@@nikki4noo I totally agree that over the past year, there’s been so much clarification about certain situations and each of the members’ true feelings. I am ot7, but Jimin is my bias and Yoongi is my wrecker. Both, but Jimin in particular, are represented in Taylor’s video as the persona presented in their earlier days. Jimin, with the work he’s done over the years, but definitely with his Face EP, has moved himself to a different level as an artist. Writing, composing, producing, playing instruments and his involvement with the concept and set design for Set Me Free pt 2 is far from the “baby-like” Jimin in the introduction video. That’s a small part of who he is, but I feel like it’s way overplayed there. Yoongi is also not emotionally unavailable at all. He’s actually quite open with his feelings. He’s also very funny. I personally think we’ll learn a lot more about each of them after they have fulfilled their military obligations. Rice Squad’s The Most Beautiful Life Goes On 2022 Update is definitely a “must see” for those new to BTS. Borahae💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

@sandydebord8153 I'm minimoni bias with JK & Yoongi as my wreckers and the other three yelling at me loudly! My problem as well with the structure for the Jimin introduction part is that it gives the impression that he did Contemporary first and then some Hip Hop. It's the other way around, he was already doing Hip Hop dancing and then he asked to join Arts High School and was fully supported by his family to do so. Also there is no clarification about the ages when Jungkook mentions he joined at 15, it was actually 13 in International age. Jimin was winning those dance battles against the teachers when he was in middle school! I need to re-read the book now after watching the doco and I've loved all the little snippets we are getting via Suchwita, especially about Yoongi being a full on BBoy and loving dance and dragging Hobi to go watch dance battles.

@@sandydebord8153- great comment, but I do disagree with some of what you have said. I do think that baby Jimin is quite a big part of his personality even to this day, and I hope he never loses it. It's also interesting that some Armys actually state the opposite and say that Jimin was forced into a tough guy image. I actually that both aspects were/are part of his personality and the duality we talk about so much. There is also the fact that people change and we can't expect people to be the same as they were 10 or even 5 years ago.
@sandydebord81539 ай бұрын
@@djlivvy46 I actually agree. I may not have worded it the best. I too love the “baby” side of Jimin, but he is just so much more than that. I just feel he’s often represented as only that when it comes to his personality. And, yes, your last sentence is absolutely correct. Nobody stays the same over a 10 yr period; not even a 5 yr span. At least, people shouldn’t. Thanks for commenting back. Borahae 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Every BTS member has their own unique style whether it be rapping or singing. They all have their own songs that show who they truly are as artists. They all are so talented as individuals so when they are BTS, they are even more powerful. Check. out some of the Bts Rapline (RM, SUGA & J-HOPE) songs.

His lyrics for BTS songs always touched us so deeply. Please react to rapline (RM,SUGA & JHOPE) Cypher 1-4. RM AKA Rap Monster has toned down but still has extremely meaningful and introspective lyrics. You also need to listen to Haguem from Agust D(Suga) which is still as sharp and quite recent. They are different when they do their separate solo albums. When they are BTS they tend to be more PG
@awang40369 ай бұрын
What I love about rappers in BTS is the they give us the non-PG raps on their mix-tapes or their solo albums. Then when we want to just enjoy mainstream music, they give us that too in their group releases. ARMY has the best of both worlds.

Fun fact: RM was sick and had BREATHING problems when he did this song. So like the fact he wasn’t at 100% let alone 80% he smacked around nearly everyone in multiple industries that was talking sh:t bout him. Also being a leader of the group does not equate to being the best. The leader has responsibilities for the care of the group as a whole and roles to do behind the scenes with the company and the group and vice versa. RM currently stand for Real Me. He changed it a few years ago from Rap Monster. ARMY affectionately calls him rap monster sometimes but only Jungkook, the youngest of the group, really calls him Rap Monster bcuz without RM, JK would not have joined their company so his name is very near and dear the members.
@sierra1679 ай бұрын
with this song he's mocking people who write meaningless lyrics. he's basically calling them a joke. he's proving that he can do the same, he can do "meaningless rhymes" too as he says in the song. the whole song is filled with them and he goes to show how talented he is as a rapper despite that. the song is so hilarious and a perfect diss imo.
@jessicar70888 ай бұрын
RM used to go by Runch Randa before becoming BTS, then once they debuted went by Rap Monster because it was a name given to him by his company. When the group gained popularity he changed it to RM in 2017 because he felt like Rap Monster didn't fit him or the music he makes any longer and because he felt it sounded weird and somewhat childish, not up to his standards. RM now stands for "Real Me", which reflects what he does with his music: show his real self.

BTS rappers write their own raps, but that's most often NOT the case for k-poppers, in general, for example Blackpink, etc., who are perhaps more accurately great performers rather than actual rappers, in that sense.

I appreciate that you are listening to new music. Your comments around 7:15 about "cleaning" up as they became bigger is actually not true. This is a solo "mixtape" put out by RM while a member of BTS. This was a side project at the time. No member put out official solo projects (physical album/promotions) while BTS was working as a group, that has only come recently (late 2022) as they stopped group activites to fulfill their mandatory military service. But as far as having to clean up to become more popular, that is untrue. To do promotions for music of course it needs to be "clean" "over there" same as it would have to be for radio play in the US, or a TV performance. It also strikes me as funny that you think artists around the world can't have the same skills as "here". I have actually enjoyed your reactions, and I will close with (paraphrased) words from Suga - "If you listen to our music without predjudice, you'll find it to your liking".

bts still cuss in their songs…them making a few pop songs ain’t gonna change that. Also what you said about rappers writing their own raps. You are 1,000% correct but because it’s not common for “rappers” in kpop to write their own music we feel the need to tell people all the time that bts write their own raps because it’s SO common for Korean rappers to call themselves a rapper but not write their stuff.

Okay since you guys are rappers these are a few recommendations for you- RM: ‘Do You’, ‘Seoul’, ‘Wildflower’, ‘Persona’. Suga: ‘Person’, ‘The last’, ‘Polar Night’, ‘Shadow’. J Hope: ‘Day dream’, ‘Airplane’, ‘Arson’, ‘ Ego’. Rapline songs: ‘Ugh’, ‘Ddaeng’, ‘Outro: Tear’. Unit songs: RM & Suga: Respect J Hope and Suga : Huh Now, the last songs suggested for each rapper, ‘Persona’, ‘Shadow’ and ‘Ego’ are connected. So they have to be watched in that order. The concept of the song is based on Psychiatrist Carl Jung’s book ‘Map of the Soul’. If you want there are explanation videos for these songs as well as for ‘UGH’ and ‘Ddaeng’. The explanation video for ‘Ddaeng’ is a must because of all the Korean word play all international fans miss. Have fun y’all!! BTS is the best rapline in Korea.
