One thing I'll mention. Compression testers have a check valve. Otherwise every time the valves opened on a 4 stroke or the piston dropped below the exhaust port on a 2, the gauge would loose pressure, the needle would keep bouncing, and you'd never get a good reading. So the needle not going back down when you stop means nothing. Need a leakdown for that. But great video, I'm binging a bunch of yours. Awesome stuff!

My gut tells me he had it running a couple months ago, thats what did the damage. It sat for a while and the mice got in it. then when he started it back up a couple moths ago all those popcorn kernels got sucked into the intake and caused the damage. Everything the kid says follows the story of the engine.

Joe you really need to pull that engine out and split it,run everything through the parts washer and Build her back up with new gaskets and I would probly replace the countershaft seal and the shift shift seal aswell.That nasty oil and particulated matter from the worn piston an cylinder have ran thru the bottom end and I would take a peak at the oil pumps aswell.Do it right the first time so u don't sell it to someone and then they have trouble and you end up having to do the job twice.

There wasn't anything broken on the engine - like ring, piston or bearing. Just the cylinder wall was cracked and there are not much metal shavings from a scratched cylinder wall either. So just two frequent oil changes will do the job, not needed to put the engine a part just because oil and coolant mixed together.

Most major sport quads require the removal of some plastics and the gas tank to adequately access the spark plug hole. I cannot think of too many sellers who would be ok with a potential buyer disassembling that to run a compression test, lol. Understand if that makes you want to walk away, but it's definitely not the norm when purchasing a quad.

As long as there are fruit grains under the valves, there will be no compression, and when the entire cylinder passage is filled with grain, the cylinder wall must split. The head gasket did not fit the cooling channels. Thanks for the good broadcasts.
@PaulHigginbothamSr
@PaulHigginbothamSr Жыл бұрын
My guess is he wasn't lying. He did have it running. What he didn't know was a squirrel had put nuts in the intake. How it got past the air filter I don't know. Possibly he had the air filter off to clean the nuts out of the air box. He never noticed the nuts ready to be sucked in. When the piston came up it had high compression which meant no squish area for the displacement so the weakest component failed being the thin cylinder wall instead of bending the rod or cracking the head.

It's VERY fast paced here.. If I go meet up to buy something expensive (1500 bucks is expensive if you look at if for possibly getting burned) anyway, if you're not 100% about what you have, what you claim to have thousands and thousands of dollars into but are going to part with for 1500 bucks, and you're not 100% of what cam you have, what bore it might have, what brand piston it is.. nah bro, why are you even talking to me? I've built countless 4-stroke race quads for Baja, MX & XC. I've never used 'big bores' for them. Always stock bore, usually stroked, always ported. Ported, oversized valves, stroked, high compression pistons gives sooooo much more power where you need it AND more reliability. Cylinder walls are a main reason. Big bore cylinders are junk. Granted there are exceptions, like LED big bores for trx250Rs and such. Btw. What is all that crap in the intake and on the piston? You probably want to COMPLETELY rebuild that carburetor as well😬

If one invests in upgrades and sells the machine before the upgrades are worn out, one can expect aa little more money for the machine. Seems like some kids believe they can pass the cost of repairs, including the cost of consumables such as chain and sprockets, spark plugs and tires on to the buyer. Can't do that kids. You've had all the fun on those tires and engine that wore out after many hours of riding or less hours and neglect. That money is what you paid to have your fun. The next owner will incur their own expenses. Learn to be omnidirectional and drop the one way thinking, it's a bad look.

You should have done a cylinder leak down test before pulling the head. You can make an adaptor to fit your air hose to that coupler in your compression tester. With that oil I suspect that the head gasket is gone but with all those seeds I suspect that a valve is not completely closing. Since you jumped the gun you will have to grind the valves anyway.

Just discovered your channel tonight… and watched two of your videos… one thing I noticed is you kick and crank on things way too long.. that obviously aren’t going to start.. and like most people when shits starts you immediately wand to wind it up without letting the motors warm up.. also I always check the air filter when contemplating buying something… if you had you would of seen the mouse seeds and there’s no reason you couldn’t of cracked open the drain bolt to see what came out… especially since it didn’t run… still you got a good deal… anyway I like your channel.. your doing what what I always wanted to do… the buying, fixing up and selling of power sports.. lots of car channels but not a lot of your type… I was hoping you had a KDX200/220 rebuild video.. as I have one but have never rebuilt it.. it probably has 5000 miles on it and still runs perfect… so I’m reluctant to tear it down… last question.. is there a sequel to this video? As I see it’s 11 months old.. I don’t see one.. if there is please post a link.. thanks oh…

2vintage has the newbie buyer stamp all over his body. 9 out of 10 times he buys the mc/quad/utv/etc in THE DARK using only his mobile phone as a light source. ALSO: If the whole family / neighborhood shows up to the deal I would turn around fast as fkk. ONLY the seller can be there. If he is a minor then at least one of the parents must be present. Nobody else.

A way to weed out the scammers on non running vehicles is ask if you can bring a bore camera. If they are lying they will either say no, tell the truth, or ghost you. Saves you time and headache. If they have no clue about the issue, then if it is messed up severely thats leverage for a cheaper price.

Joe check the fly wheel moon key on the crankshaft it could be sheard of inside to. Causing it not to start up.& Run again along with having no compression to.,or A bad camshaft one on the top end witch throws the valves off to due that reason alone. Same ol same ol Joe never trust anyone,always go with your gut,don’t say anything about what it has,don’t believe what they say,just go with what you think it’s worth,no harm in being honest,they will either take it or not,you’re running a business and it’s all about profit and loss,you’re in it to make money 💰 bottom line. You just have to be tough,and assume they flogged it,which is the case most of the time, Look after yourself Joe ,you have almost half a million subscribers now which is a tumultuous effort Joe,congratulations,get yourself other vendors like tool companies parts companies and machine shops to come in and invest in your builds you have a huge subscriber base and that gets they’re name out there too. Fantastic Joe you’re only young make the best of your situation and the opportunity to improve it,talk to the major companies,brands get them interested in your product and what you do get them excited and get they’re products on your channel ,and become really successful. I’ve seen other KZbinrs with no where near the subscriber base working with Rocky Mountain ATV,HMF,ECT,Take the chance Joe,what’s the worst they can say-no??. But eventually you will come across vendors that will happily work with you just for the exposure ☮️👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Seems to me most likely what happened was. He parked it, maybe even for a short while. A mouse put those pebbles in there. He came out and started it, heard some strange noises, that went away after a few seconds. Meanwhile, what he didn't realize or stop to think better check things out. No, just run it. So it ground all that crap up as we see it clearly having run quite a while. No more noise, no more problem. So he kept it running probably road it for a while and it started to degrade performance...eventually to the point of it no longer running and starting. At that point, he looked into it, found the pebbles, observed the foamy oil and coolant loss. At that point he realized it was pretty ****ed.
