The finest Mario science on KZbin. Ceave, have you checked out some of the SMW rom hacks that have custom items? Barb just uploaded one called "JUMP" and it contains "sticky" blocks, which hold onto shells if they're thrown at them. Rom hacking (SMW specifically) is rich in custom items which i think would be a great avenue of exploration for your channel. (those sticky blocks do allow you to retrieve the item also once it has become stuck.)

For the problem you were trying to solve at the 4:00 minute mark, wouldn't the easiest solution be to use the original design but replace the ceiling above Mario with a spike? It seemed like the exploit relied on Mario bumping his head against the ceiling, at least if the tunnel is the same height as Mario.

Great Video! I also have an idea using entity limits B & C. I present: easy mode and hard mode. There are 3 pathways , each one the exact same path, just with changes using entity limits. There are currently 99 Power-ups , and 99 enemies , both of which are on fire bars , going through pathway one will spawn one more enemy which will fall on a firebar , so it will not de spawn , there are 30 Question blocks all over the main course , a buzzy beetle shell will hit these as you walk by , if the enemy limit is reached and they never despawn , no enemies will spawn from those blocks creating a less difficult challenge , do the same with power ups, just replace every enemy with power ups and you get a hard path.

An even more complicated mechanism is one that prevents Mario from having a key or any item. (Most items are already prevented because of the vine climbing. However, a p switch thrown against a wall will bounce up slightly, and can be balanced on Mario’s head while climbing a vine.) The mechanism itself seems to take up less space than your final design and only uses a single sprite. It’s very hard to describe so I’ll do the best I can. I’ll try to “graph” it out to make it as clear as possible. This isn’t the only way this setup works, it’s just the one I have. So, let’s have the base of the keydoor (not the ground below the keydoor) be the origin (0,0). (1,0) Is a ground block (2,0), (3,0), and (4,0) are also ground blocks (1,1) and (4,1) are spikes (2,1) and (3,1) are ground blocks (1,2), (2,2), (3,2), and (4,2) are spikes (1,3), (2,3), (3,3), (4,3), and (5,3) all have vines over them From (0,0) to (0,3) is a vine (it’s four blocks tall not three, I know, it’s confusing) (0,2) is a hidden block Taking up (0,0) and (0,1) is a keydoor that kills Mario when he goes in it (-1,1) is a noteblock (-1,2) is a sideways spring From (-2,-1) to (0, -1) is a conveyor that moves to the right and is on the faster setting Place ground where it makes sense Mario is entering the contraption from (-3,0) Mario’s general exit is at (5,0) Sorry that this might be confusing, but it’s the best way I figured I could type it out. I made a similar level like this awhile ago called Koopa Town. You started in a town with koopas that stood still and talked to you using comments. The koopas told you something about themselves or the town and one koopa-kid told you about their angry grandpa (a hammer bro). All the houses had doors and if you entered them you got inside the koopa's house and you had to enter the grandpa's house and go through a pipe to finish the level. Every koopa you killed gave you a key and when you got to the end I used the vine mechanic shown at 2:03 to judge you. If you got to the next room by using the locked door you would see more and more flying dry bones for every "enemy" you killed and if you killed too many you would get stuck slowly falling down the abyss while the flying dry bones laughs at you. If you didn't kill anyone however you would get rewarded by getting at the top of the flagpole at the end. I was really proud of that level but it got a lot less interesting when miiverse died and all the comments got removed :/

4:31 In New Soup you can wall jump within the first few frames of exiting the door to get up without even touching the vine. I'd probably put the door that goes next to the key door on the same y axis point and use winged blocks to push Mario as quickly as possible into the one tile space the key door is on.

Ceave, your videos have helped me to make cool gimmicks in my levels. Sadly, I only have the 3ds version, but I was able to make a puzzle where you have to “watch TV” to win, using a Boo in a clown car, precisely placed so you have to be on the chair. Thank you so much for teaching me about the beauty of loading positions and note blocks! (You can put stuff in the TV to make it more dangerous, like a Bowser or Piranha Plants, and give the note block a p-switch so you can “turn the TV off”)
