Every college has a Financial Aid department on their website with information on how to go about applying. Then your son can go to or call the financial aid office of the college he wants to apply to with any specific questions. The FAFSA is online for free. If you have problems filling it out there is a phone number you can call for help. I am sure they answer the questions of thousands of people every year filling out the FAFSA. Try everything yourself first. You probably won't be surprised to find out that you can do it without paying anyone a dime.

Secret 3 really only works at most schools if you have circumstances such as a loss of income or some medical bills, and even then it is no guarantee. It doesn't work just because you got bills and the aid package ain't enough money. I would say the number of schools reserving some aid to just help with "appeals" would be fairly small, and certainly not if you are at a community college or state school. Secrets 1 & 2 are spot on. Secret 3 should be how to search and find private scholarships, scholarships in your community, etc. And don't get scammed by paying for scholarships. Otherwise, good advice. :-D

Having a large percent of tuition required to come from high interest private loans is why many can’t pay off loans after graduation (excluding those that get useless degrees that provide no marketability in the job market) I remember the good old days when I could get a government loan for my full tuition and tuition was affordable enough I could pay half of it while in school and the other half with 5 years of graduation. It is correct that the home you live in as your primary residence is not count as assets, unless, here's the part she forgot to mention, but that many students lose aid on is that, if part if your primary house is rented that part IS counted as assets AND must be reported on the FAFSA.

Every school is different with how they award aid and these "secrets" may not always be beneficial. Schools with Institutional methodology look tend to have more institutional aid to give out, so they look closer at factors the FAFSA doesn't consider, while Federal methodology schools primarily award federally-based aid with some more limited institutional aid. Also, schools have FAFSA days for free and you don't even have to attend that school. You can always go to your Financial aid office for help with these steps. With the Data Retrieval Tool now, unless you have specific circumstances preventing you from using it, the rest of the FAFSA is basic information.

Dont go to college unless you have some kind of benefit or scholarship. You can’t pay it off in this day and age. It’s not 1960 anymore which most people running the place seem to think it still is. Also good luck finding a job while going to school that won’t say you need more experience or your schedule conflicts with ours. You also need a FULL TIME job not a part time. After taxes and expenses, you will have nothing left after a part time paycheck. You have to get a full time job. That means using whatever free time you have to study. Those parties and friends and happy moments you see in movies aren’t real. You literally have no time for that. Don’t even fuckin listen to people telling you to go live your life and go travel because you have to work every chance you can. Those same people who tell you to go travel and have fun also had it easier in their time when they could afford a house, travel every summer and get a masters without debt just by flipping burgers. If you have a decent paying job already, some kind of benefit, and a major that is actually useful and not some fuckin bullshit that isn’t even a job then go to college. If you don’t at least have one of those 3 things listed, then you should look at construction or any other full time career. That’s reality kids. Like i said it’s not 1960 where everything costs a nickel.

Hi Fasa Guru. I have two question. 1- If the parent and the student are dependents on a older sibling's taxes. Do the student submit the tax information of the person who claim them as a dependent on their fasa? 2-If a student is over 21 and pays for their own housing and all personal needs with no financial assistance from their parents, why do they still need their parent tax information on the fasa application?

Is it worth it to pay the CD penalty of around $21 to withdraw the $3,050 from my daughter's name and put it in an account of mine? Not sure. Small amount and then it will just show in my savings for the FAFSA.

This is not as cut and dry as she makes it seems. Other factors, such as family size, family income, assets, etc. also go into the formula for determining eligibility.
@TheFAFSAGuru5 жыл бұрын
There are a lot factors that go into play in determining the expected family contribution from information that is on the FAFSA. Basically you can expect that any need-based aid she would receive from the college would be reduced by 20% of what she has in her savings account so in this case that would be about $600. And that’s if she’s eligible for need based aid.

Hello! In order to do an apple you have to ask you Financial Aid office for a Professional Judgement some might even call it an Income Change Review. This is not something that everyone will qualify to do. But if you or your parents income is different then what it was in 2019 or 2020 your financial aid office has the power to reflect what your income looks like know on your FAFSA and that can help you qualify for more Financial Aid. You need to provide all the documents your FA office will ask for and make sure you are detailed and truthful in your statement! I hope this helps! I work in Financial Aid just so you know!

Hi Tina, If my parent's income will be less in 2019 calendar (less than 2018 tax year), do you recommend we contact each school's admission office (email or call) and let them know that the income on next year's fafsa form (2019 tax year) will be less? My mother is separated and child support will stop as i turned 18 this year (i'm a senior in High school). I think you mention in one of your videos that the schools may reconsider EFC/ eligibility (we think we would be eligible for PELL grand next year as we did not qualify for it with 2018 income data). Thanks!

Hi I use to go to a community college I got fafsa for 2 semesters but I failed my classes. I honestly didn’t understand anything, I didn’t even know how fafsa worked I got it done with my high school English class and I just kept doing the applications my community college gave me.. well anywho it’s been 2 years since I dropped out, I feel like I can handle responsibilities more. I’m on my own I’m 22 would there be any chance I can get help in attending school?
@TheFAFSAGuru5 жыл бұрын
Barbara Dominguez Hi Barbara are you wanting to go back to the same school or a different one… If it’s the same school they might’ve placed you on academic probation duty or grades which means it might not be able to access financial aid at that school until you successfully take a couple more classes… I’m happy to chat with you more about it and set up a consult call if you would like

Hello. I retired at 53 due to my plant closing in 2019. In 2020 I pulled out a chunk of cash from my 401k to pay off my car and motorcycle. My 18 year old is going to college in 2022. I hear that it's best to do fafsa early but I'll have to use my taxes from last April and that makes my income look 4 times as what it really is now ( collecting a pension). Should I fill it out now or wait til I file my taxes next year when it'll reflect financial reality?
@kennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn12423 жыл бұрын
FAFSA opened this month. You have to use 2020 taxes even if you wait to file 2021 taxes because this review is based on 2020

an inflated AGI due to a one time retirement distribution is considered a special circumstance and you need to report it to the Financial aid office, and they can recalculate your EFC and adjust your financial aid package.

Hi, i just submitted the FAFSA form and I chose the not filing taxes choice because my parent's income isn't high enough to file taxes. When I submitted my form it say that it could not give me an expected family contribution number because the annual income for parent 1 was too high. It said I had to contact the financial aid offices of all the colleges I chose. What do I do now??
@Victoriaaillis3 жыл бұрын
Hello Lizbeth, Here are the rules for a married couple to file taxes (Married filing jointly: $24,800 if both spouses under age 65. $26,100 if one spouse under age 65 and one age 65 or older. $27,400 if both spouses age 65 or older.) If your parents made more then the listed income they will need to file taxes. If they made less you will have to go back on your FAFSA and make sure you put the right income for each parent. I hope this helps! Also I work in financial aid just so you know lol.
@TheFAFSAGuru3 жыл бұрын
if they were required to file taxes due to their income they will need to file taxes and you can say "will file taxes" instead of not filing taxes in this section, provided they plan to file

If you go to fight you’re faster you have to write down how much you put into your retirement and now that’s going to count because I was going to do that because I wanted to try to get more FAFSA and I was told I had to write down every Patty I put into my 401(k) and my other retirement plan so I do not recommend to do that you are a professional you would’ve known this I live in Massachusetts

If you do an amended tax return on the previous year tax returns, can a person get a backpay fafsa money when the government ends up owing you money???
@TheFAFSAGuru5 жыл бұрын
Jade 11 If you amended your tax return you should make a correction to your FAFSA and notify the financial aid office of this change in income… Depending on the circumstances they could reevaluate your financial aid package for the year… But it’s getting late you would need to do it soon
@jadekara46435 жыл бұрын
The amended tax return was for the year 2017. Is that too late to get backpay fafsa!adjustment??? Thank you for responding 🙂
@TheFAFSAGuru5 жыл бұрын
Jade 11 you used your 2017 taxes for the 19/20 financial aid award year which just started this semester so yes you could make the correction still because we are in the current financial aid award year that you used those taxes for. But you need To notify the financial aid office soon about this amendment

Hi, I have been following tip 2 and all the refunds I’ve gotten from financial aid have been deposited into my fathers account. How long do I have to keep my money in his account? Also, if my parents happen to pass away, where would the money in the bank account go? I’m worried cause all my financial aid refunds are in my father’s account. (I don’t have an income btw)
@TheFAFSAGuru3 жыл бұрын
If it is a refund from a parent plus loan, he has the option to have it deposited into his account on the PLUS loan app, he would have to change that on the application. The loan money goes to the school and credits your account first before the credit is deposited into his account

How does the appealing the award get me more money ?
@lesliesandoval68895 жыл бұрын
Danny Delao basically you’re negotiating for more money from the school. Generally speaking when people accept their award letter they are saying they are okay with that the school has offered them but when you appeal your not rejecting the offer to go to the school you are basically just saying is there anyway to get more money to meet my need. this is why you need to send a letter with the appeal explaining why. This is helpful in gaining a few hundred or even a few thousand added to your award letter. Nothing bad really comes out of it. The worst that could happen is ur stuck with the same award letter and at best you get more money. Hope this helped.
@TheFAFSAGuru5 жыл бұрын
90% of financial aid offices keep money set aside specifically for families who appeal… Colleges want to help students be able to attend. If you write an effective appeal letter and the college has money to offer then you could get some additional aid
