ahh Maureen, my favorite "opinionated quilter". I've made 6 quilts where i've cut my own strips. I've used jelly rolls and have nothing against them but it is more fun to choose and cut your own. Now the real reason you are my favorite... Last August I had a heart attack and a stroke the next day. My sewing room became everyone's junk room. It wasn't my happy place anymore. The stroke left my right side useless. I wanted to get rid of all my fabrics, just get rid of it, there was no joy when looking at it. But my friend, Julie, said give it a few months instead. Well I saw your ultimate scrap quilt and I can do that. I got the pattern in May. I made 12 or 16 blocks, a nice start, when Fathers day was approaching I finished my husband's quilt which had been languishing since 2020. I've completed three other quilts with three more in the works. I have recovered my ability/mobility. I"m about 90-95%. Thank you for bringing back my joy. Diana

I have made more quilts than I can count. I have never bought any precut fabrics. I find that choosing the fabric is the so much fun that i would never bypass that step. I also enjoy the cutting. My mindset in making a quilt is never to just get it done as quick as I can. I love the process and its great "therapy" for lifes stressed. ❤

I look forward to seeing your quilt coat! Re. Budget methods of printing sewing patterns - many public libraries have digital projectors that can plug into your laptop computer (or use one of the library's computers) available to use on site, and in some cases, they may possibly allow you to borrow the projector to take home. There are several KZbin video tutorials that teach you how to trace the projected pattern so that you trace the right size. If you're going to use it often, video projectors have gone down in price and can be purchased new for $50 US. As for cheap pattern paper, I've retrieved flip chart paper (from past workshops and training sessions) out of the office recycling box, big sheets of wrapping paper used for packing breakable items (bought at truck rental or moving supplies stores), and rolls of cheap newsprint from big box office supplies stores. Even Ikea carries rolls of paper for under $5 (in their kids' section).

Precuts are the convenience foods of quilting. Quick and easy, but usually including ‘ingredients’ you don’t want or need. 😂

I have to admit I have just found you on YT a couple of weeks ago. I am a beginner sewer and I am looking to get started on my first "real" project. Your videos are easy for me to understand and enjoyable. I look forward to watching more of your videos while learning on how I too will be able to sew a quilt someday soon. Your giveaway, the "scrap box", will help me accomplish making a scrap quilt which was always my favorite, looking, quilt. Thank you

Thank you, once again Maureen for discussing the importance and money saving aspect of cutting our own strips, rather than purchasing precuts ! Yes! The most fun of quilting is picking out our own colors and patterns for our projects🧡 I’ve purchased precuts that were beautiful but had fabrics that I wondered how in the world did those pieces get in here🤦‍♀️😂 The scrap box will be SO much fun to dig thru and make something beautiful. TY once again for sharing your expertise with us!

I almost NEVER buy a fabric line. It's too "matchy matchy" for me and there's always 1 that I can't stand. Picking my own allows me to add a variety of values, prints, and textures, and every fabric I pick is what I love. BTW, I use my accuquilt to make my own jelly rolls. I always buy 1 yard, use what I need and turn the leftovers into jelly rolls. I have TONS of strips now that would have cost me a fortune if I had bought them in sets, AND my scrappy quilts are oh so scrappy! Another bonus for me.....I get to spend HOURS in a quilt shop choosing from tons of beautiful fabrics!

Oh yes I love choosing fabric! I've only had one jelly roll and I really don't like it at all - I find you have little wiggle room if you are doing HSTs. I had an idea for it, but got cheesed off very quickly! Now I have several fabrics that I have grouped together to make something, but so much left overs and I now make scrappy quilts - I love scrappy! Now that I'm more confident with colour choice, it's really fun! Especially when you throw in something daft like a little pirate, or a shark or a penguin!

I actually just finished my second quilt top in a row that is from 2 1/2” strips. All were cut from my scraps with the exception of the background which I purchased to pull the colors together. I do have some jelly rolls in my stash but I by far prefer to use my stash and pull from fabrics I love. Scrap quilts are my favorite type of quilts. I donate a great deal the most recent place I have been giving to is the cancer center that has wonderfully cared and treated my husband 3 times. We get to give to others that may need a quilty hug. A scrap box would be wonderful to add to my bins for some additional colors and patterns.

Over the last few years, I've become a scrappy quilt maker. I would love the option of the scrap box to add some lively colors to a couple of quilts I work on randomly. I do really like the braided quilts and have only made table runners so far. Have really been considering making a lap size quilt with this pattern though. Thank you for the pros and cons of buying jelly rolls. Very well thought out points to make.

Your scrap box of braided scraps would be a welcome project. Literally, in the last week, I was looking through a couple of different patterns for making braided table runners and considering using some of my own scraps to make up a couple as potential gifts to have on hand. I've been on a 5 year quest to use up all of my mother's and grandmother's quilting scraps. Finally, I'm seeing the end of the quest and thought a braided project would be a good way to utilize a whole bunch of 5" strips. Cut in half, a lot of interesting braids could be created. Appreciate you weekly opinions and "no=-nos" as well as recommended approaches. First thing every Monday morning, my week gets started with your wisdom and experience. Thanks.

On and Off and google. You should have been able to hear me and my parrot laughing at that! So true. Sometimes there are quilts that are just too far gone to do anything else with but cut them up and use the pieces for something else. What good are they doing if they are folded up and hidden away? I have a stuffed bear that I bought about 45 years ago that was made from a piece of a quilt and I love it as much today as the day I bought it. My uncle was a chiropractor and on the board of a chiropractic college and my aunt ran there auxiliary. The auxiliary had a shop where everything in it was hand made, mostly from leftovers or remade from something else. Everyone who donated items was retired. It had the greatest stuff in it.

Love that scrappy coat panel! Such bright energetic colors! Believe it or not, I had the same idea! I'd bought a pack of FQ flannels on a whim and later ordered a template set to play with. One day the two popped together in my mind to make a light housecoat, only I'm thinking of doing ragged edge piecing. You know, your idea of a post office box of scraps is genius. I, for one, would be thrilled to pay shipping plus extra for the time spent to pack up some scraps. But only from Quilter's Heaven, your scraps always tug at my heart strings. Forgot the name to use for the give away, but that's ok, it will find a loving home from one of us who watch your videos.

I had wonderful scraps from 3,generations of quilters. Moma came to visit and had kist/misplaced one of thw 14 (yes 14) tops she brought so she'd have my help layering and basting. I'd love a scrapbox again, we used the generational scraps to replace the blocks/top she'd "lost". My daughter learned to sew by piecing replacement blocks.. After all that she found the original blocks zipped into one of the many pockets in her suitcase. Needless to say, she took 15 quilts home ready for the machine quilter❤.

I’ve just finished several quilts using my scraps and modesty aside, I like them much more than those I’ve made from coordinating fabrics. One actually turned out large enough for a king bed (I have no idea how I’m going to quilt it on my Bernina 770, though!). Your scrap box will likely produce a wonderful piece because your color palettes/fabric choices are so unique - the jewel toned pieces you held up were definitely colors I’d choose. For what it’s worth, I’ve only experienced disasters with precuts so avoid them (usually it’s because I don’t like half the pieces in the package). Although I did break down and purchase 2 “jelly rolls” of the Gustav Klimt fabrics and now have no idea what to do with them. Can’t find a block or pattern that could handle 2.5” strips that all have so much gold! Any thoughts/advice/suggestions welcome! Thanks for sharing your opinions & expertise 😊

I would love the scrap box. I am in charge of donation quilts for my guild so I use all the scraps. Last year 140 quilts went out the door. That's a lot for a small group of ladies. I do find that pinked edge a pain but when I'm trying to get the ladies to make a quilt to donate those jelly rolls can come in handy. I can often find great sales and add a solid or tone on tone, get two lap quilts out of one jelly roll. They can line up the pinked edge with my edge and everyone is happy. Love all your helpful hints. Do you have a quick Christmas gift show coming? Need some fresh ideas. 20 years ago I lived close to you. Now I am retired in NC. Thank you, great show.

I have two more downsides to 2.5” strip rolls. First, precuts are a pain to store. They don’t play nice with yardage or other scraps unless you unroll them and mix them in with your other scraps. But my biggest beef with precut 2.3” strips-they are so very often .Even when they are reasonably accurate, I loathe and detest pinked edges because it is a pain to get them to line up properly. My blocks are generally reallly accurate if I cut my own fabric but if I use precut 2.5”strips they are often too small or uneven either because they are cut wrong, or because some are 2.5” from peaks and some from valleys and some half and half. I decided to cut my own and only buy batik strips because they weren’t pinked. Now they are switching to pinked edges, and the last one I used that wasn’t pinked was also miscut with wild variation in strip width. I’m done with any precut smaller than a fat quarter or MAYBE a 10” square if it is an exceptional fabric line on a really good discount. I am cutting my own strips of different widths every time I cut out a quilt, and I cut scraps down with my Accuquilt or my Stripology ruler. I even cut HSTs out of scraps for (controlled) scrappy quilts in my future. Scrap box would be a dream!
