I wasn’t a terrible student in undergrad, but my GPA wasn’t competitive for medicine. After failing to get admitted to medical school my first application cycle, I decided to study at a Caribbean school. Your encouraging videos had a strong influence on that decision. I find out where I’ll be doing residency in less than two weeks and get my medical degree next month!

Awesome! Went from a 1.5 gpa in high school and now at a 4.0 GPA. Going to med school in the Air Force. All this though is contributed to God. Just my belief and support by my wife. Me what I’ve learned? Don’t be lazy. Get tutored. It’s not that hard. I am 29 and wish I started earlier

Did you do the program through the Airforce? Considering it myself.

@@BenjaminMaciel21000 depending on your age I would do like two year program. Then go in. Just my thought I am going in as a Surg tech then getting all my other licenses and degrees while in

Excellent tips! Needed to hear this from someone who faced and completed the most arduous of career journeys. If these tips worked for you, then they will work for me and others. "The Happiness Advantage" was published years ago. Read the book then but thought the idea of forcing yourself to be happy was unrealistic. Will try again. Thanks

Taking into account your years of experience and insight, how have you dealt with and deterred burnout from working as a surgeon? I know basic answers can be derived from this particular video, but I think it would be beneficial to hear a further detailed explanation regarding the specific known problem among health providers.

That's a really good question. Unfortunately, I don't think I dealt with it very well as I think I was very burned out when I left medicine a couple years ago. But looking back I think it's important to make sure w we have personal time each week. And by that, I just mean the time we are not working that is significant. Instead of just time we are eating and sleeping at home in preparation for going back to work, we need time to do fun life stuff away from work so our entire identities don't become our work. Just my opinion of course haha.

Hi doctor Buck I’m almost graduating nursing school and I’m thinking about going to med school after this. I went to nursing school because I wanted to become a paramedic (in the Netherlands you have to be a nurse for a few years before you can apply to paramedic school). But since I’m in my final year and doing my internship at the ICU I’m noticing that I’m really taking an interest into the deeper medical literature and treatment options. I think I might want to become a trauma surgeon such as yourself or maybe an intervist (ICU doc, idk if the names are the same in the USA an NL). The financial investment and the investment of years of my life are really a big scare off tho… Do you maybe have some advice for me, I’ve seen your decision making video but I feel like I’d really love both, being a paramedic and a doctor… Earning a LOT as a doctor and you know being ‘the boss’ over the treatment options does really do sound appealing. Love to see you’re back on youtube and hope to see you more often. Thanks from the Netherlands!

Would you still have followed through with medicine if you had known you could make just as much, if not more, money by investing? I'm sure you don't regret becoming a surgeon. It's evident you still love medicine, however, its just unfortunate that burnout is so prevalent in medicine. Also, we'd love to see a vid about your investment journey! (How you started, how to start, tips, ect.)
