There are several inherent problems in these common mistakes that dog trainers and dog owners make. The key issue is that these things confuse the dog and THAT can lead to a host of other problems.
I'd like to address the issues for you here one at a time.

The first of the three issues is that dog trainers will teach a dog to stay, then walk away and then RECALL the dog.
In this video I explain to you why this can be very unclear to your dog and how it can result in a very dangerous situation.

That is why I always diffferentiate WAIT from STAY. That is wait until I call you; stay until I come back to you. Love your videos Robert. My 8 month old Belgian has just won his first obedience competition using all your methods.

This is a good idea. I’ve taught wait as part of stand still with me until I move (for crossing the road, stopping to let someone past on a pavement etc.). I’ve primarily taught stay with a release of “ok” next to the dog (no touch) but have also occasionally combined stay with come. Sit is pretty much always combined with stay

I train positions in a box. The result is the dog doesent creep forward at all. I also dont have wait command. Sit means sit, down means down, stand means stand, no need for additional stay command.If the dog is sitting it is implied that he must sit on that place and not stand, walk around and sit again when he wants.Also it is implied that he must not lay down.Sit means sit, nothing more, nothing less.

@@joezec72 being as animals are not rational, per Aristotle (metaphysics) and BF Skinner, they are your robots whether your emotions like it or not. We were not created the same as the animals. We were created to have dominion over them and do so as good stewards (Genesis 2). So yes, you should prefer a robot, as you call them, as opposed to autonomous creatures who cannot, in principle, think for themselves. It is a simple matter of metaphysics.

The sit, walk away and then call the dog is one of the first things i learned at our dogschool. Never knew this wasnt the right way to teach it 😣

Totally agree. There needs to be some kind of “release” type of command for sit-stay, down-stay, stand-stay types of commands. The dog should never have to guess when the exercise is complete. You give fantastic reasons why. Subscribing now.
@gymkhanadog
@gymkhanadog 5 жыл бұрын
Any following command should be an indication that the "exercise" is over. This is why myself and many others who've commented agree that you shouldn't conflate Sit and Stay/Wait commands; it just confuses the dog. When you tell him to Sit, he sits, he expects that either you're doing to say something further, do something, give him something, etc... If you tell him to Sit, and then to Stay, you have now completed that cycle of commands in the dog's mind. He now _knows_ for absolute certain that he should be Sitting *and* Staying/Waiting. I've never had any dog be confused about when the command is over because the commands are not conflated, so the dog is never confused about what he should or shouldn't be doing.

He does make a good point so the dog doesn’t form the negative behavior of just getting up and walking to the handler when given any type of distraction. The only part I would disagree with is having to walk back to the dog to release them. You can release at a distance. This method can easily work with a dog who is just a pet or who just competes in obedience. But an actual working dog, where it be security, detection or whatever, you have to be able to recall from a distance. Even if they are in a sit, down.

Thus exactly what I was thinking
@skinnydogkew
@skinnydogkew 4 жыл бұрын
First of all recall and release are two different things, nowadays people also have multiple releases to direct the dog to a certain reward or lack thereof. Second, constant release from distance creates jittery stays, you have to change the picture constantly so the dog doesn't think distance or posture etc. Also if you always call the dog from a stay, then your at liberty recall will definitely suffer.

THANK YOU ! I've been making this exact mistake and this video is like a light bulb going off. I even experienced the very issue of my dog anticipating the recall and breaking the stay today in the park. It's suddenly seems such an obvious mistake and he's learning the pattern I'm now teaching him. One positive is I've spent a lot of time proofing him against distractions by rewarding in position and only recently been calling him to recall from a sit/down so I may not have lost too much ground. Back to basics for a while to repair the damage. I've still got so much to learn. I can't thank you enough for this invaluable advice, can't wait for the next video !

I'm a yoga teacher in training with a service dog. This really helps me to form a plan for how to keep her stationary in the classroom while I do yoga. We learned in training not to give second commands, but we also learned recalls and in doing regular obedience with her, I've focused a lot on the recalls and stays instead of using sit like I was taught to. It's such an easy habit to get into, especially when you constantly see other people doing that or you've grown up with dogs that have been trained but not well. I'm going to work on fixing this habit. Thanks for the video!

Clear and concise explanation of an essential part of training a dog. It is essential that any trainer's clients need to understand the WHY. It really gets my goat how some trainers like to complicate things to make themselves look like magicians instead of explaining to dog owners the WHY and that all dog training is is association and repetition. Train the owner, train the dog

@Robert Cabral pretty cool video. Its nice to see another dog teacher using negative markers. And you are so correct about the use of the negative markers. They should never be used in anger or frustration. Dogs pick up on those emotions rather easily. When you feeling anger or frustration its time to take a break and have some play time. I know a good game of tug can get out a lot of the frustrations. But its important to never give up, your dog will learn. You just need to be patient and calm during dog teaching.
