Mel, I have been watching your videos for a couple of years. I have thick curly hair similar to yours. I am 34 and I always wore it straight until 2 years ago, when I started wearing it natural. After watching your videos and following your advice my hair grew exponentially, it was beautiful and healthy. Just as I started loving my curly hair I was diagnosed with an aggressive type of breast cancer. I went through many different treatments for a year and a half and I lost all of my hair. I finished treatment, cancer free, 2 months ago. My hair is coming back very curly and hard to manage. I started watching you again. I have bought most of your recommended products and I am following your routines. It has changed my world post cancer. It is helping my hair grow back and look nice and healthy while it grows back out. I watched your video last week where you were questioning your career choice. Please know that your making a difference in people’s lives in a way you may never know. You have helped me when my confidence was at its lowest. You are very knowledgeable, vibrant, and helpful. Thank you for helping all the curly girls find confidence in their curls 👏🏻 That has been on my heart to say I hope it gives you a wide perspective of the difference your making. 🙏🏻

I'm a wavy to curly girl over 50 with very long, mostly natrual gray hair and what's left of colored hair towards the bottom, and I've been watching Mel's videos since the pandemic. And I've half-assed her and other's suggestions on my hair. I know Mel knows what she's talking about, but I get lazy with my hair. I also get into a rush and want it done and dry NOW. I hate air drying because it takes hours, and I also wash more frequently than I should because of summer heat and menopausal night sweats. This morning I made a pointed effort to do things the "right" way after watching this late last night. I also don't own a Dyson and never will due to the cost, and use drug store products that I can afford. I have a decent dryer I got on Amazon along with a diffuser. I started with the detangling in the shower and applied my leave in and gel to sopping wet hair. Scrunched with a t shirt. After a few minutes I went in with my dryer using the techniques above, and I'm having the best curly day ever, with little to no tangles in my length. I was literally going to cut off about three inches of hair. Even my wirey grays are behaving as best they can. And it didn't really take any longer than when I rough dry my hair and finish it with a warm flat iron or curling wand. Bottom line, if you're like me and you've watched her videos, use her information! If she can take the time to make them, we can take the time to do our hair the right way!! Thanks Mel 🌹
@wtedwards38832 жыл бұрын
This is true. Yes it would be nice to have all the fancy equipment and expensive products but you can get pretty much the same results (curliness level of your own) using drug store, and non terry towel to plop and any diffuser using her methods and recommendations.

I like my dyson but I prefer a bigger diffuser bowl with longer teeth to get to my roots without squishing the curls and dry more of my hair faster, sooo… I ordered an extra concentrator attachment from dyson, then had my husband cut the magnet part and high heat glue it to my Black Orchid diffuser. I’m in love. Best of both worlds.
@StormyDay3 жыл бұрын
Great idea! I returned it because I hated the diffuser (plus the price).
@juliebruce11143 жыл бұрын
I recently started seeing a curly trained stylist. She gets MUCH more definition at the root when diffusing. I have super fine curly hair and I asked her what she was doing. Instead of pushing the hair to the root and holding the diffuser for a few seconds, she picks up the hair gently and places the hair in the diffuser off the head a little. I know you are “hands off” but since I have been doing that I have more definition and less frizz at my roots!

The Infiniti pro by con air works well for me and it’s only like $35 on Amazon. For those of you who are saying you can’t afford a Dyson. You just need a diffuser, and this one comes with one too! Just be mindful of the heat settings. Don’t use the hottest setting. I usually use warm and cool. It takes a bit longer of course but my hair is healthier for it ☺️

Tip and trick that I do is to use a rotating space heater. I sit at my vanity while it sits behind me on top of a folding table and let it do it’s thing. First I start in the back for 15 minutes, then both sides and last I’ll move my hair by doing the swaying technique. There is no crunch afterwards. It’s just shiny supple curls.

Not a vid, but I had a really tough problem with this. At night I use metal root clips to teach my hair to go up. I use Boldify Root Spray in my roots and for root volume and root wave definition, I use a 4 prong Spriggle pick and stick it straight in my hair scrunching in and then lifting the root while hover diffusing (a little like back combing without the combing part). This works really, really well. It's like hands free scrunching your hair. You get no frizz though because you aren't disrupting the cuticle or curls and waves. Also dries your roots fast.
@angeleazaanderson40233 жыл бұрын
Love this! To elongate my curls, I hover diffuse for definition and then put the concentrator attachment on and blow it on my roots while holding the ends. Then I pick it out (with a regular pick, not the attachment) for volume! I do use the comb attachment to blowout my hair before flatironing and it’s AWESOME

I am so happy I can across this video. I will be referring back to it whenever I blow dry/diffuse my hair. It’s not often. I usually let it air dry or plop it, but while I love waking up with styled hair, it does sometimes have varying results as my curl pattern can get wonky. Although I live that it’s not frizzy doing it that way. I’m definitely going to try back combining it at the root to see if I can achieve a little volume there.
@lagatita16233 жыл бұрын
I love that there are options! Because you know with different curls you may need to experiment to see what works and some days you want a slightly different look. Finally wearing my hair wavy after straightening it for 20 years! I think I'm 2b/2c but its nice to not always feel I need to have it look uniform and perfect.
@imajenn30063 жыл бұрын
I don't do it for elongation, but for root volume and root wave definition. I use a 4 prong Spriggle pick and stick it straight in my hair scrunching in and then lifting the root while hover diffusing (a little like back combing without the combing part). This works really, really well. It's like hands free scrunching your hair. You get no frizz though because you aren't disrupting the cuticle or curls and waves. Also dries your roots fast. Please review Virtue labs curl line with either their mousse, AG mousse Gel, or Gel over the Curl Whip cream (you may get away with just the curl whip). It uses ethically sourced human hair keratin that bonds to your hair to repair damage and add fullness. The curl line & mousses are the only dimethicone free but OMG this is AMAZING STUFF. They are working on a gel at consumer request.

Mell! Help me! I have watched and researched SO much. I’m obsessed with your channel. I love everything you do. I am convinced my hair cannot be dried in under two hours. It takes me about 3.5 hours to get to 80%. And I have to use a higher heat setting. I have the dyson blow dryer - which was a game changer (took me 5-6 hours with my bioionic dryer). However, still takes so much longer then it seems it should based on everything I’ve watched and read. I am constantly doing treatments to make my hair healthier as you recommend - hot oil treatments, deep conditioning, bonding, clarifying - with the products you recommend (you’re brilliant) but, STILL takes ages. My hair is long, so I know that’s working against me. It’s also coarse, and high porosity. I follow all your tips on how to diffuse. Still, I feel like I’m ten years older by the time it’s at least dry enough to stop styling. I don’t know what to do! I love my healthy curly hair, I do not want to go back to constantly being hard on my hair with heat and straightening. I would be happy to pay you for your time and advice. Please get at me when possible. Fellow Ontarian 😁. In case I haven’t said it enough - you rock and you’ve changed my life lol.

I've been looking at reviews for myself and the Shark seems to be pretty comparable and less expensive than the Dyson, but it's newer and not as popular so it doesn't have as many attachments.

I am a middle-aged lady with a huge pile of 3b hair that stays wet for a long time so I have always had nice dryers -- Babyliss, Solano, Elchim, Chi. When Dyson came out, I was like NFW that's too much but let's see. I made several trips to the Bed Bath & Beyond to dry my hair with their Dyson display. I was not impressed (but the store employees & guests always were lol). In 2021, I was looking for a travel dryer, small, delicious. I splurged bought the T3 FIT micro & it is the best dryer I have ever owned. Ever. It's still a kind of spendy dryer but tbh I stopped using my Chi Touch 2 lol so it's not just a travel dryer anymore. Good luck.

I like to use the first technique that you used, then separate the curls to very small clumps when almost dry.... like very very small, and finally I scrunch my hair again when its dry and separate the hairs I missed. That leaves the definition, no frizz, a tun of volume and fluffiness :3. I also brush my hair upwards cause when I brush it to the side, it still looks flat so I have to brush the hair up.

I have been here since maybe your 4th or 5th video. It’s been amazing seeing your channel grow. Plus my hair loves all your tips! After all these years I think it’s finally time I bought the Dyson diffuser

Just in time... I legit just bought a hairdryer...with diffuser...first one of my life after watching other vids. Until now hairdryer meant frizz...NOW I know why. Cant wait until my undercut grows out too and see just how a full head of bounce is gonna look now I know what to do, and what not to. Thanks Mel, so much!

Ahhh this video was so helpful!!! Would you ever consider doing some more “protective” styling videos??? I’m not confident when leaving my curls down but don’t want to do some of the tight styles that stretch my curls! Thanks! ❤️

Doesnt the scrunching, increase the shrinkage of type 4 hair? What's the best method then? Thanks for an informative video

I gorilla taped my diffuser to a brush handle, so that I don’t have to lift it myself. I just move around with my swivel office chair. Game changer !

Hi, Mell! I’m a 3A with very long hair like your sister, but my curl pattern does not start till 3 or 4 inches from the scalp! Have you ever heard of this before? It’s still frizzy but does not curl. Now, if I cut all my hair that short, it won’t be stick straight, but it won’t be curly either. Just frizzy and about the worst hair anyone could ever imagine, no real curl pattern just a mess. It’s very strange looking hair. My hair has all textures, mostly on the fine side, but not super fine. Oh, and my crown in the front portion is low density with medium density everywhere else. What is my problem, DR. Mell?! ♥️ and how do I fix it?! 🙏🏻

Do you have layers in your hair? It sounds a bit weighed down. Btw I'm a curly Hairstylist.
@StormyDay3 жыл бұрын
@@sharkitty thanks for your input. I do have long layers in the back but I have a fairly short crown, a little below chin length) and still. Like I said, I had short hair at one time, it’s not straight, but not curly either. Just frizzy and I can’t really call it a curl pattern, just frizz. If i put gel or anything on it to tame the frizz, it’s straight with a slight weird wave. Also, there is absolutely nothing heavy about my hair. I wish that was my problem! I have great definition on the rest of my hair, like most people the top portion is more damaged but the rest is perfect.
