Oh boy! this has to be the biggest weapon in my arsenal. I've followed Paul and his lessons for a very long time. He has some of the most amazing scale sequences and short runs that'll help you build your Vocab. But this lesson opened so many possibilities to connect all those little licks and runs that sometimes leads to nowhere. Thanks a lot!!!

I totally agree and thank you! He's such a great player, but then he's also an OUTSTANDING teacher. He can explain complex ideas and arrangements but in a totally easy-to-understand way. I've always found Gilbert, Steve Morse, Scott Henderson, and John Petrucci as great musicians, but they're also great teachers too!

I remember when I was just starting to play guitar and I stumbled across this live solo of Paul Gilbert, I was not ready for it haha , it blew my mind ( In the old days of youtube most of the time the video had the audio blocked due to copyright infringement (?) ) thanks for the lesson and for reminding me of this great performance and licks , definitely gonna try to learn them !

Love the Paul Gilbert tips thank you. A little trivia here, I was a recording engineer at a little studio in Virginia Beach back in the mid 80' called Magic Traxx when Scott Travis came in to record a demo I believe he was taking with him to LA just before he joined up with Racer X. It was just him playing drums. I was alone with Scott that night. When he began to play, I knew he only needed his big break, he sure got it! Another piece about Scott Travis, he didn't just want to be a great drummer, he wanted to be the drummer for Judas Priest... I later did live sound for Eddie Schultz, Scott's childhood friend. They grew up practicing drums together and it was pretty cool that they both played very similarly.

i'll never have a long enough pinky to do these but i love the last one and have tried it super slow and my hand strength is weak considering my years of not practicing or trying new things. My gosh i love those licks though and i'll never get it but they will still help my playing and strength trying. Great video and Paul is incredible as yourself is because you can play his licks.

10:35 for the tabs. Don't be like me and rewind half a dozen times trying to get the notes. Also, all three licks are ALL outside picking. ie. if the next note is down a string, upstroke, and vice-versa. Great warm-up.

My buddy (and guitar teacher at that time) went to GIT in Hollywood, California and Paul Gilbert was one of his classmates. Mr. Big was opening up for Rush at the Miami arena. Paul had left a couple of tickets for us and while Rush was on stage we worked our way to the front and passed a note to one of the security guys standing right in front of Geddy Lee. We wanted him to bring the note to Paul and he did and the next thing you know he’s telling us to climb over the wall and come back stage! We missed most of Rush, but hung out with Paul and Billy Sheehan, eating fruit and cold cuts. They were laughing and telling stories about their days at the Guitar Institue and crazy stuff they did. What a blast!

hey David..totally agree with you about PG. His playing, humour and humility make him one of rocks finest humans. I love this channel mate....the format, with the 3 licks etc..is simple and well explained and suits those of us who've been around and played a while. Its excellent, in the sense that it's inspired me to keep learning.....especially from the players I wouldn't usually listen to. So thank you mate, for being a great player and teacher. Keep up the good work! Cheers

So informative and helpful. Paul Gilbert is just too good. Awesome lesson brewster 👍👍👍👍👍👍. Marty Friedman is highly underrated and overdue. You'll be doing us a huge favor . Like Paul, Marty is also one of the most down to earth shredders from the 80's(Shrapnel Records stablemates). Will be anxiously waiting for it dude. More power to you buddy

Thanks for watching and for this comment. I haven't created a Marty Friedman lesson for LNL yet, mainly because I just had a Marty Friedman lesson published in Guitar Player Magazine. Check out their August 2019 issue for more or you can also find it on their website (with audio tracks). I'll create a Marty-inspired video soon enough. Thanks again! : )

Suggestion for the folks trying this. Look at the thumb (especially in lick #2). A loose grip will give you the speed. Don't grip tight or you'll struggle.

The last lick is impossible to pull off
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 5 жыл бұрын
That is a tough lick! I highly recommend practicing the basic arpeggio fingering first and once that becomes comfortable, then you can begin applying Gilbert's tricky sequence to it. Muting the strings and keeping things dampened/muted is really important (as I mentioned in the video), as you're going to be shifting and skipping around the strings so much, it's really easy to lose control of the strings as you play through it. Just start slow and gain control of the fingering movements and the next thing you know you'll be shredding this idea all day. Thanks for watching, good luck, and ROCK ON! : )
