Two thumbs up for cover-roll stretch. I've been using it since you first recommended it months ago. For me, it is the best and most effective way to tape. That's based on my subjective experience and also my OSCAR data, There's a reduction in leaks and also a reduction in sleep disruptions. I usually use two strips, with one taped on top of the other for a little more stability. I used to cut a small slit so that I could re-hydrate with a straw in the middle of the night. Now, I skip that because I'm unlikely to wake up during the night, sleeping a full 7 hours. That last part is just amazing.

Mouth leaks used to wake me several times a night as well as waking with a dry mouth. I now use the Bleep ports/mask and I seal my mouth with a zinc free denture cream. I found tape irritating to my skin (except for SomniFix, but it didn’t work very well for me). With this combo I now have zero leaks of any kind. It’s been so helpful for my sleep.

Love the cover-roll tape and it has been a giant success for me. I use two pieces of it, one over the top of the other, and slightly staggered to cover more real estate. A few secrets. I dog-ear the bottom piece so I have something to grab in the morning. Then I pull slowly (I have a mustache) to remove and it doesn’t pull off any skin. As you mentioned, I did have to adjust my pressure up a couple of points to feel like I have enough air. Don’t tell the Cpap Police. I just went rogue. The added pressures generated by good taping and my adjustments also required a change in masks from my old Resmed Airfit P10 pillow mask to a Resmed N20 nasal mask which is far more tolerant to my now leak free pressures. And No, I didn’t ask anyone if I could do that either. I long ago had my prescription changed to “mask of choice” so I didn’t have to. The N20 is also very long lasting and easy on cushions. It took me a long time to figure all this out but I would have never gotten there without your help Jason. Because I live in rural Montana where power outages are frequent I went solar with a massive 12v battery to guarantee that I don’t have interruptions with my mouth taped. That eliminated my final objection to mouth taping. One final pro secret is that I put a loose fabric bandaid over the exhalation holes of the hose in front of the cushion so it doesn’t shoot cold air out and hit my wife in the eye. Thanks for all the help Jason! You are truly a Rock Star!

I've been taping for a couple of years now. I've tried all kinds of tapes with some being non-effective and others nearly ripping my lips off. NowI have settled on using Nexcare 3M micropore sensitive (low trauma). I used one strip but was occasionally motor boating (love that description) through the one strip so I tried 2 overlapping strips. Voila! Pro Tip: Unless your skin is already oily, apply some moisturizer to your mouth area. When I used Jason's recommended tape without doing that, it felt like my face was being ripped off when I removed the tape. I used Olay Regenerist because it was handy, but any moisturizer would do. The tape stayed in place perfectly and came off with only minor face-ripping. It did the trick for my therapy, too, because I had no dry mouth in the morning. Winner!

I started using tape over my mouth a couple of weeks after seeing a video from Nicko on CPAP Reviews, but I've been watching your videos also. I downloaded and installed the Oscar program and used it on my wife's profile. She's being resistant to using tape even after I've told her why she should. I've told her I've observed her leaking through her mouth and that's it's also bad on her teeth. I used to drool on my pillow a lot, but now it's stopped. I now need to upload my profile on Oscar and see how I'm doing. I use a 3M medical paper tape for now, but I have the tape you linked saved on my list on Amazon. The tape works fine, but it leaves a slight residue that washes off with soap and water.

Actually I wear a full face mask and OSCAR has shown me that I get fewer leaks and better numbers when I tape. When my mouth opens and my jaw drops, I think it changes the shape of my face and I get more leaks as a result. (I have a very small chin.) My pressure is above 19, so I do everything I can to avoid leaks. I use a small pieces of tape vertically in the centre of my lips.

I started taping for the past 9 or 10 months. First with 3M tape, but that had pulled apart too fast. Then tried Somnifix, that didn't work at all. Then someone on the apnea forum suggested Fleximull...which is the European version of the cover roll. That seemed to work for me, especially the 4" width for some reason. I think it holds on any jaw/chin movement better. I tried the 2" BSN, but that didn't work very well...again, I'm thinking my jaw/chin drops and I do have Bruxism and wear a mouthguard. For sure I have to shave, as I have 5 O'clock shadow at 9AM. If I don't shave for a day, I start getting mouth leaks. Other than that Lefty's channel and tips have really helped. May try to the Bleep pillows as I never get zero leak lines with any of the Resmed masks....oh yeah, I'm using N20 mainly, but also P30i, N30i and F&P Brevida. Keep up the good work Jason!

THANK YOU for this suggestion Jason. I tried the Cover Roll tape which works well to stick lips together, but don't like the fact that it's permeable and lets a little air in and out. I like to sleep on my back and still get a dry mouth with this tape in place because it stretches enough to let my lips separate slightly, even with a soft cervical collar, and thus allows that little bit of airflow through it, which adds up over the night. So I reverted to the one method that seems to work for me - put lips together, cover acroos mouth with a piece of one and a half inch wide athletic tape (Walgreen's...cheap) and then wrap a length of inch and a half wide self adhesive stretch bandage (like the stuff they put on after you have blood drawn - it's cheap online also) over the athletic tape and lapped a couple of inches in back of the neck to secure it, which keeps the non-breathable athletic tape in place all night.

I started tape with the f30i and was working good. Had no more dry mouth. Bought an n30i and tried last night, tape woke up many times, my cheeks puffed out and basically loosened the tape to where it started to leak. I have " the eliminator" per one of your previous videos, my jaw still drops using it. It doesn't seem thick enough to prevent my jaw from dropping. I have 2 different neck collars but I just can't get used to sleeping with it. Going to continue trying with the n30i and tape to see if I can eventually get used to it. Mouth guard isn't an option because I already have Invisalign retainers.

@@tommangan7 ok update again from last night, tried to do the n30i nasal mask only with mouth taped, also used a soft cervical collar. Still woke up in the middle of the night, first time due to being I uncomfortable with the collar. So I took that off. Went back to sleep with the nasal mask and tape. Woke up second time, checks puffed out, tape started to leak on corner of my mouth, mouth very dry and pressure very high due to leak and ramp up on the auto pressure. So I took tape and mask off... Put a new piece of tape and put my full face f30i back on. Problem solved slept uninterrupted the rest of the night. I think having the full face with the tape helps keep the difference in pressure across the tape seal less than what it would be without the full face... So when I was only using the nasal mask let's say my pressure setting was at 14, when my jaw drops and mouth puffs up, there's a 14 cm H2O difference in pressure from the tape (inside my mouth) to outside (nothing) cause there's no mask covering my mouth to supply back pressure. This high differential essentially leads to tape seal failure.... And then mouth leak. When I use the full face with the mouth tape... There's essentially a 0cm h2o difference in pressure across the tape because it's 14 inside my mouth and then 14 outside my mouth cause the full face goes over my mouth. The tape with the full face essentially just fixes the dry mouth problem by preventing me from breathing through my mouth (cause it's taped close. I have not really experienced the problem with having full face mask leaks due to jaw dropping... I have always just had the dry mouth issues.

Tape vs. chin strap? Wouldn’t the chin strap be easier and more comfortable than ripping tape off of your mouth in the morning? I do have mouth leaks and hate the chin strap, but I’m thinking that I would hate tape even more. I’m guessing that with tape you would have to shave before sleeping. Last year when I told the sleep clinic that I was considering duct tape they laughed and sent me out a Respironics Deluxe chin strap ref# 302425. I guess either way it takes getting use to.

You speak gospel, you long-nosed wacky crazy maverick wild man! I never heard of mouth taping until your videos. I thought you were crazy, but I am a true believer now (in taping AND your questionable sanity). It was a game changer for me. The chinstrap never worked for me and I had crazy patterns on my face all day from it. The mouthguard made me drool like Hooch (or is it Turner)? A couple comments/questions: - i’ve seen the little lip tape things that have a split in the middle, I presume to allay people‘s fears of suffocating. Doesn’t that just create more leaking/whistling? - you seem to have a perpetual stubble on your face. How do you get the tape to stick? I find that if I don’t shave less than 12 hours before going to sleep the tape peels up the corners and whistles like a tea kettle. - I am not a trained Pollyanna Philatelist like yourself, but I do have a pro tip for those worried about waking up in a panic and needing to pull off the tape (to cough, hurl, etc). A dog you’re one corner of my tape; gives good peace of mind and makes it easy to pull off in the morning. Now that I think of it, I might have gotten that tip from you originally. - I find that when I tape effectively, and fall asleep and my muscles relax, my jaw opens and my cheeks pop out like a puffer fish. any problem with that (other than completely and forever turning off my bed partner)? Thanks again for all your videos. You really have changed my life with these. No joke.

@monicaperez28433 жыл бұрын
Dianne, please don't give up! It takes 30 - 90 days to get used to CPAP. Also be prepared to go through several masks types/sizes. Beg you to call your respiratory therapist and sleep doctor. Tell them what you told us. Can't stress enough to exhaust CPAP before considering UUUP(?) and Inspire surgery. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) does not go away by itself, and taping alone doesn't treat it.
@fitybux46643 жыл бұрын
That is so sad to hear. You will literally die sooner if you have untreated sleep apnea. (There are studies to back up what I'm saying.) I had a father in-law that passed away like this. After his death, his children are mad at him for being untreated. (It felt like years have been robbed from them.) Don't give up. Or if you do, at least allow that CPAP to go to another good home before it becomes outdated equipment. Get a better mask, or get a better machine. Pester your doctor.

Thanks for replying… I’ve got the collar and a chinstrap, not KnightsBridge though, I have the Respironics strap. I’ll look into the KnightsBridges. I find with the collar, as long as I stay on my back it works ok, but I’m a side sleeper. I’ve tried the Somnifix, but it doesn’t stick well on my left side for some strange reason. I did try that cover-roll tape last night. Its the next best thing to duct tape, why didn’t I know about this stuff when I had little kids? I got success from that tape with the nasal pillows. However, I would rather not tape. I guess it may be my only alternative 😕.

I tried this out and it didn’t work well for me compared to a chin strap. I still ended up with a dry mouth when my jaw opened even though my lips stayed taped shut.
