I hear that! I must have watched 100 videos on starting KZbin channels and the like. I did not even want to pay attention or look at any of it. I don't understand it, it is scary. I just ran across this channel and am so appreciative that I did. Nate explains it in an easy to understand way. Just watching this video has reduced my fear of even looking at that section. KZbin is definitely suggesting our videos to the right audience, One thing I cant seem to get up though is "Suggested Video" click through rate. It seems like no matter what I change with titles and thumbnails that suggested video CTR stays around 1%-1.5% even if browse is in the 10-15%. I've also now noticed that if my video gets more impressions in suggested than browse over the first 24 hours the CTR will plummet and the video will hardly reach 100 views maybe a bit more but if the video gets more impressions in browse over the first 24 hours the CTR gets held up and it seems like the Algorithm pushes it much more with those videos reaching 800-2100 views. I feel like my only way to defeating this is by attacking my suggested CTR but I dont even know where to start 🤷‍♂
@investingissimple1642
@investingissimple1642 6 ай бұрын
It is similar for me also. CTR from suggested is always about half of what it is on browse. If anyone has tackled this issue and has managed to increase their CTR for suggested videos it would be great if they can share how they did it :)
@LunLunBall
@LunLunBall 6 ай бұрын
My first reaction is that since youtube pushes "suggested videos" to audiences that have viewed similar content, the reason your CTR is so low is compared to channels who are pushing similar content, your videos dont seem appealing. The fastest way to fix this is to make your thumbnails similar to these channels, since you are competing with them but as a small channel are probably at a disadvantage cause you havent established credibility yet.
@TJandRose
@TJandRose 6 ай бұрын
@@LunLunBall Yeah I’ve been thinking a lot about this actually, it’s almost like if you don’t follow the same “Paranormal” or “Horror” thumbnail format then it won’t get clicks at all but that makes standing out from every other video that uses red arrows and red circles seem impossible. It’s almost like a double edged sword

Thank you, this was very helpful. When I make occasional music theory videos, the musical styles I deal with are often extremely different from one video to the next, and the youTube algorithm seems to struggle when suggesting content. Do you know if the algorithm also factors in the previous video a creator made when picking the videos to suggest content?
@BakeAcrossEurope
@BakeAcrossEurope 6 ай бұрын
I have a very specific niche. One that has already pretty much determined the type of video that I make each time. The only choice I have for tailoring my videos to the suggested videos is whether or not I choose to make something obscure or well-known. My loyal viewers love the obscure, less well-known bakes that I do, but the algorithm likes the opposite. It's hard to be classified by the algorithm if you're featuring things that no other KZbin video exists on. I do get picked up by Google search a lot because of that, but it's not enough to prompt the algorithm to push me out to a lot of people.

Same issue. (Different channel) I wanted the algorithm to know what my targeted demographic was, so for the first year I uploaded content regarding that theme, while I waited for the real important content to come to me. The suggested videos for that first content made sense, but once I was finally making videos for that same audience, it completely ignored title, thumbnail, description, keywords, other videos on my channel, and instead suggested videos based on the content itself. In other words, instead of suggesting it to people interested in construction updates on a company they were interested in, it just suggested it to people who watched dash cams and construction equipment! So pretty much, for these videos, the viewers I’m getting are mostly search and external.

My first video was over 20 minutes long and got 25k views in less than a month. Second video got 1k views. Now every video gets 100-300 views. Same niche. Similar or exactly the same style, just on different characters within the same universe. I legitimately do not think the KZbin algo is that smart. Whatever force that controls impressions appears to be clueless and random. My first video needed like 400,000 impressions to get to 25k views. Why not just send out the second video to those 400,000 people and see if it also works? Just, not a smart system.

Sorry but you didn't say anything new to me. I started a channel 3 years ago, I uploaded some videos and I received many views from suggested source. Then, suddenly, a year and a half ago, my channel totally stopped getting views from suggested videos on all my content. It went from 400 views per day from suggested to literally zero. My channel never recovered since that day, losing 98% of viewers overnight. Since then, I still notice something like one suggested video view per month on my videos, but then it gets immediately removed from KZbin within a few hours or replaced with another source the next day. I'm pretty sure there is an intentional suppression of views coming from suggestions on my channel.

This first point was so aggravating to me. For months, maybe years, I've looked at videos suggesting my videos and none of them usually match my niche at all. It is rare that other horror booktube videos suggest my stuff. The closest they usually get to it is Mr Ballen or other creepypasta but that's not what I do at all. I get all these weird clickbait videos and of course the feedback KZbin gets is poor. This has been my most disappointing thing I've the last couple of years: KZbin has no idea what my channel or videos are about! However, the viewers do since the channels my audience watches matches my niche and mood exactly. The robots are not working. Sorry to rant but, I get the opposite and detrimental results from suggested traffic unfortunately and I feel it's ruining my channel.

Ooooh, interesting - I did a video on the dji mic 2 day the day after it dropped, having a small channel around 32 subs at the time, bought it and discovered the promised bluetooth connectivity to smartphones was severly limited (no backup recording) so I made a video about that - so far it has over 1000 views, almost 60 hours watchtime and I got around 18 subs from it. From the analytics over 64% of traffic comes from Browse … and above 15% from suggested and 10% from search - and over 43% suggested came from 1 single video, and the rest of the vids suggesting my video are spot on in terms of segment - but over 64% from browse surprised me a bit.

Hey, yo. Just checked out your channel. And I hate to say it - other than the fact that it looks like fun - I have no idea what you do on that channel at first look. Are you a lego review channel? History channel? Vlog? Gaming? I have no idea. I'd pick one or two related things from your popular videos and double down on those. If Lego gets you consistent views, double down on that. Use your unique presentation to set you apart. Not saying history or science isn't important - but they seem disjointed from other content. I'd also be more clear in your "about" so the first line makes sense when people pop in. Just quick thoughts. Keep pluggin away and learnin, growing, and adapting! Don't give up!

@@LordThaddius hey my Lord Thaddius thank you so much for taking the time to look at my stuff. You’re right, I have a broad range of interests. I did start as a LEGO enthusiast, but that only takes you so far. I love to chat about loads of stuff and I couldn’t run a channel on just one subject (I tried) - I’d just get bored pretty fast. So I talk about science, IT, history, sci-fi, occasionally LEGO, and sometimes my animals just run wild and have their own adventures. I’m pretty sure this will not help me get recognised in any way, but if I just focused on just one thing, I’d have given up long ago (maybe it’s because i have ADHD?). So what I do is just for fun, refining my skills and have my crew on the screen chatting about stuff week after week. It’s all delineated into playlists though: the Doc’s “did you know”, Mouse’s tech talk, Fennec’s sci-fi reviews, McCluck’s rants and the Captain’s LEGO designs. All separate, yet all merged together as my crew just won’t shut up and they always burst into each others’ vids. It’s wild and it’s crazy, and it can be cruel sometimes. It’s very broadly, edu-tainment 🙂

Hi Nate, man, am I glad I found your channel on a whim! I'm just starting to create my own KZbin channel after thinking about it for 3 years and am just doing it for kicks. I don't want to make it a full-time gig or famous or strictly monetized. It is just entertainment and info basically. It is going to be a faceless channel. I don't want to be a KZbin Partner (not much worry about that ever happening) nor do I want to get involved in Patreon or paid memberships and the like. I also don't care about subscriptions, "like" buttons, etc. If someone wants to subscribe they can, I'm not going to ask or beg (partly because I don't really understand how it helps anything). I might go with some affiliate marketing at most later. I also will not be actively marketing the channel, just letting folks find it by accident or something. Just trying to do a channel is extremely hard in itself. I am trying to learn video editing on my own as I know nothing about that. (Audio editing I can do with one eye closed all day, but video is a different story). I'm far more interested in rhythms rather than algorithms. I was not going to even venture to look in that area as I likely would not understand it anyway and did not want to know (partly because I don't care). However, watching you explain it makes me feel less scared to take a peak if and when I ever get the channel launched (I'm hoping for end of April, but I'll see). My bar is if I get the channel launched I'll try to keep it going if I get 7 views per video or more over the first three or four months, less than that and I will take it down because it is a ton of work and makes it hard to keep up with domestic duties and such. It also has cost me about $250 so far and I have not even started filming yet. I hope I am done spending hard earned money on this experiment, any more and I will need to quit. I really appreciate your explaining what it means and why some things are important in it. You are the first one I have run across that explains this stuff in an easy to understand fashion! I have seen many others show all this stuff, but it may as well be in Chinese language or something and it is geared towards marketing and force-growing ones channel and getting rich off KZbin, basically chasing unicorns in my book. I'm going to watch your other videos as well, that is the ones I may need to watch that are relevant to me. Thank you Nate for doing this!

I do serialised (episodic) content and what I've found lately is that KZbin is pushing ANY video I make only to "existing" subscribers. However, because they don't like the non-episodic thing, KZbin sees this as a negative signal and doesn't push it out to NEW viewers ... which is who it was meant for in the first place. So I guess question: keep pushing the new stuff out and screw the episodic, push the episodic and grow slower but with a stronger base of fans, or ... ? Even the shorts I've pushed out were sent to fans only/mostly.

Hmm, 1st suggestion - I get pushing suggested videos " No enough Data to show this report" I'm guessing this means my videos are not being suggested? Second suggested idea I believe is more around scrubbing. People are now scrubbing through a video and then stopping to watch. Then they may go back and watch the whole video or they move on. Thanks for the insights. Stay safe, have fun! 👍😁🍻

This is actual GOLD 🥇. Especially with the first tip of suggested videos. Never had an issue with getting new viewers, it was the returning viewers that was the problem. Now trying series based content and that seems to be increasing returning viewership

Thank you Nate. This is helpful and I'll did deeper into analytics. I found that views are going to some body camera videos that I made which are related to gig work (my channel's main focus) but not all people that are interested in body cameras are interested in gig work. I recognize my "challenges" and should consider making off-topic videos that might get views but detract overall from KZbin sending drivers my way. Thank you once again. I respect and try to heed all your advice. Russ

I don't get the algorithm... lol. Soooo often I have amazing analytics on the first day of posting... Clickrate of 25-30%, AVD of 50-90% (on longform). Some likes, comments, occasionally a sub. But on that first day the algorithm just gives the video maybe 100-200 impressions. But every single time when the analytics are good like that, the algorithm will suddenly push my video in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT! And every single time that means all analytics will crash and the algorithm will give up. I mean, the algorithm making that mistake 2-3 times makes sense. But it keeps doing that... If it doesn't my videos get up to 1k-2k views (usually on video's that don't have all that great analytics on day 1)... Whenever the algorithm decides to push my content in the middle of the night (it doesn't have an international audience) my content will get stuck at 100-200 views.... The algorithm also still has trouble finding similar video's. It has definitely improved... but not even that long ago we got traffic from Formula 1 video's, or videos on GTA V hacks... We're a video with vlogs on teenage girls dancing! Everything in the video's description, tags, etcetera clearly mentions this...

Looking at the "Suggested videos" list, I see it's only 11.4% of my views, and is third in top traffic sources. So I'm not getting a slew of traffic from suggested. Mostly Browse features and shorts feed. Now, if I go to suggetsed videos and see where KZbin is servicing up my videos (mostly VODs), a lot of those are coming back as my own videos. With some random ones (wrestling and a music video?). KZbin is weird, man.

This is so useful, thank you, Nate. On my channel, it's strange. I have 2 similar videos, both performing well (one is more recent but on the same topic). The older video gets suggested by exactly the right channels and the correct niche, but the newer one, not so much; in fact, 50% of it seems random. Tags are also similar. Any idea why that might happen? Or is the video too recent (2 days old)?🙄

OK, here's a couple question. In the first tip, the suggested videos should all be my videos, right? Well 2 of them are not. They are in my niche, but not created by me. When I click on See More, I see there are several others and I am able to select them and see how many views that get. Again, not my videos but they are showing up in my analytics. Or am I wrong that it should be showing a list of my videos? I ask because the first 3 are my videos. So the most common channel suggesting me is me. That can't be good. Next, I am only getting about 12% of my view from "suggested videos". It is third behind Browse features 43% and KZbin search 29%. So, KZbin is not suggesting my videos at a very high rate it would seem. Note that this is my rate for the last 365 days. But, if it is show other creators videos as my own, do they even know which videos are mine?

Thank you for doing an excellent video. I have one question. What do you do when you metadata up your videos with all the keywords, titles, descriptions, thumbnails and the content of the videos designed to attract viewers from your competitors and the niche you're going for, only for completely unrelated videos to suggest your content? For example, all my videos are full of hidden disabilities metadata around autism, dyspraxia, ASD, neurodiversity etc, including the spoken words IN the video. Yet, looking at a recent upload, the three videos suggesting my content have titles around 'beautiful moments caught on camera', 'key & peele slap ass' (don't even want to know what that is!) and an ancient Chinese water secret! I'm not quite sure why my content isn't picking up my targeted niche when I'm filling up my metadata and content with the keywords. The retention's usually quite decent when they finally find my videos as well. Thank you again, Luke:)

I feel like I'm clearly targeting the audience that I want to with my content. But KZbin isn't really recommending my videos off of other videos that I think should be, there's channels with 300-400K subs that make almost the same videos as me and they get 70K+ views a video, so I know the audience is there, I'm just having trouble capturing it for some reason. I do get new viewers almost every upload though so I guess that's a good sign.

3:32 the “other videos your subscribers watched” has been down for all the channels I managed for a month 😢 independently of the traffic (some of them have 400k views every 28 days). Anybody else experienced the this?

The first one is what we are trying to do right now. We are making psychology reviews on movies. We suppose that our audience is People (mostly women) interested in psychology. But almost all recomendation videos are movies (full ones in KZbin) in KZbin of very specific ganres, so our videos are reccomended to Men watching this sort of movies, Men don't interested in our content and skip it quiqly. But clicks and watch time from homepage are good, so we try KZbin to stop recommend our video to wrong People) changed the titles and stopped upload shorts (episodes from long videos). Now we are waiting

On my channel in the first example you give, only 12% of my traffic is coming from other videos. But the videos and channels shown that are suggesting my videos are about 100% spot on. Any thoughts as to why this would be the case?

Just looked at my suggested videos for the last 28 days and most of the videos there were my own. As I went down the list then a few others came up and they were related but then some weird ones about motorbikes and neuroscientists. But an intereting video. Thank you Nate.

Nate, I find that the recommendation system always misunderstands my content. Why? Because it’s suggesting my video to other videos that are no where near close to what I’m talking about. But once in a while it gets it right. And the difference is this… Wrong suggestions means the video fails with only 50 views But the three videos where the recommendation system got it right. On has over 1k views. The other has 6k views and still bringing in new viewers, and finally the third one just passed 800 views and keeps on moving. I’m going to try some of these advice you give here. 👍

Howdy, howdy, So....I looked at the analytics you mentioned, and in the past, I did try other things to try and stimulate growth and views and subs on the channel and I've been partially successful. However, people are now coming to my channel for those more outsider videos, (commentary on pop culture - through the lens of a writer) rather than my bread and butter ones - writing advice from a writer and talking to other writers. So, do I split off those commentary ones to a new channel? Feeling very torn and a bit puzzled.

Very helpful, thanks Nate! It's been a minute since I checked the videos suggesting my content... It has helped me to confirm the idea of what kind of content does best on my channel, based on those that are recommending mine. I'm hoping to reach 5k subs this year, and so I am playing close attention to when you release a new video 👀 You've already helped me so much and I am so grateful for you! Thanks for everything you do for the YT community!

Question Nate: why don’t I see the scrub stats? I’ve seen other KZbin educators talking about this. Is it only after a certain number of views? Also how is this different to looking at your retention graph (though I’ve noticed KZbin have removed one of the retention graph options)

So my question is, what to do when videos are not suggested to many or very little? I tried running the youtube promotion at the beginning of my channel, which I now know I should not have done. But that seems to have hurt my channel, which I find rather distressing, consedering it was suggested via youtube itself... This in turn have hurt the suggested part of the search. Do I just have to wait it out? Thanks for making amazing content :)

So towards the end you brought up my concern. I’m not getting new viewers anymore since February. I do indie horror games and I record them consistently as the games release. My videos usually drop within 2 days after I send them to my editor and he sends them back. I feel like the videos come out pretty well compared to my competition but I’m just slowly dying out at this point 🤷‍♂️

I find my videos are suggested mostly on random videos that have nothing to do with my channel, but I don't know how to change it. I believe the titles, description and tags are accurate, I do my own subtitles and those are accurate too. Could it be because my channel is not in English and so the algorithm just thinks all non-English speaking channels are the same?
